When it comes to luxury cars, second hand is always a good option if you are capable of inspecting the car thoroughly. Luxury cars have its own advantages in terms of driving experiance and especially in India people judge/respect differently if you come out from a Luxury car. I bought a 3 series BMW and its very well maintained which I can never get a new one at that price. Its worth it if you can maintain it well. I am loving it. Cheers.

Yep, I bought a used luxury car for mostly professional purposes and occasional intercity shuttles. One thing that is missed out in the video is that even after buying an seconds luxury car, you are not free from electronics expenses. It's the electronics and tech sensors which would show it's age after 4~5 years and by that point you need to shell it out from your pocket(and not warrenty). However, mechanically these cars can drive for 2~3 lakh kms easily, may be suspension change after 1lakh kms but the electronic tech will burn you if you want those features. If not, something like a City or Verna should be fine for most of people who needs a car and can maintain it.

As a owner of 4 cars, the one I really enjoy in city is S-Presso, the cheapest car I own. Easy to drive, easy to park and less worry of some idiot damaging it.

Technically, a luxury car owner is not helping the economy in any way. Usually 99% of luxury car owners register their cars on their company name and claim depreciation every year and show it as company's expenditure and when the entire value of the car is claimed they will sell the vehicle and buy another . So, the tax is exempted on the entire value of the car + resale value. And luxury cars are imported so our country has to pay in dollars to import these cars in the first place, which is already a burden on our country's current account deficit. Moreover, luxury cars consume more fuel, and we import fuel using dollars. As the dollar reserve reduces, the rupee gets devalued, and inflation will start rising. It applies to the iPhone and everything that is imported and moreover all the serviceable parts including engine oil gets imported, so each lux car will consume more dollars in its lifetime so it is actually very bad for the economy, to discourage this act govt is imposing more taxes. But imagine how many iPhones can we import for the price of one BMW X1 ? If you say that I want a BMW because I love its driving experience and I can afford one, then I will totally agree with you, but I will not agree about helping the economy.

My key takeaway is the following - Instead of buying a brand new luxury car, but a 3+ year car maintained immaculately so you get the benefit of depreciation and a much reduced tax outlay. This is amazing piece of advice. The only thing is how do we know the car is maintained immaculately and I also saw there is a huge cost variation for the same model car across different used car dealers.

Instead of buying x4..you could actually buy a m340i which is bang for your buck...that 374 hp makes it a perfect sports sedan that you can buy over there...and it costs you same as x4 did....and really thanks for your explanation and it made me think about it..

You forgot the interest rates. Hey Sriman I am driving a Crysta, Vento and Safari. All of these cost me 75 Lakhs including the interest less than your BMW. All my family members are using these vehicles. I knew about these taxes on luxury cars 8 years ago and decided not to purchase one because I am not convinced as the roads we drive these luxury cars are not safe and service costs are too expensive. So I recommend people even they are affordable not to buy luxury cars and become choo**ya.

BMW Audi Rangerover Mercedes are celebrity cars. Practical and smart people buy Toyota and Landcruiser, Acura, Honda. These cars don’t depreciate as luxury cars.

Cons of BMW are definitely not the difference between ex-showroom price and on-road price. Cons of BMW is the built-to-price engines and plastic parts which they use in their engine cooling systems and vanos that usually results in catastrophic failure sometime in every BMWs life .. usually after 40k kms. Expensive spares imported from EU also mean repairing these plastic cars often prove more expensive than buying fault free cars of some vintage. that is also the reason why so few used bimmers are seen on the road esp more than 10 years old.

That's why we don't see many foreign cars on India ,Without taxes Fortuner would cost us around 20L our govt imposes 110% tax on imports . Same this Fortuner costs only 18L in Thailand whereas 40L + in India

Don't forget that this 90 lakhs which you are paying is post tax income. So you have to earn about Rs 1.34 crores, pay income tax with surcharge, cess etc @33% and then the post tax income is 90 lakhs. So basically you are spending Rs 1.34 crores for a car of Rs 49 lakhs. However if you are showing the car as business asset, then you can claim depreciation.

in the price of only CGST- 6.7 lakh i got tiago XTA automatic, fantastic pickup build quality and comfort., also easy for wife to ride in neck to neck traffic. though had a VW cc(35000$) in USA.

I was always clear to buy the BMW X3 30 (which I felt is the mid range SUV) only in the US or Arabian countries if I get a chance to work in onsite... And for me to use in India, I was just planning to get simple one like Baleno around 10 - 13L( It was the price few during few years ago - choice I had to buy... if buying in India). In my opinion, For common people around upper middle class- its 100% not a wise decision to pay nearly 50% in taxes while the environment is also not great to drive happily in India.

If I can only invest in either apt or a car, I will invest in an apt. If I can invest in car and apt, then I guess it makes sense. This is some gold info. I used to explain this in comment section of car portals like auto car , rushlane. Everyone was calling me a fool. But thank god someone is giving good information.

I bought a car 1.5 years back and did a very logical analysis. I got the gst rates for cars and the lowest gst slab for petrol cars was 28%+1% for sub 4 meters below 1200cc petrol car and 28%+3% for sub 4 meter and below 1500cc for diesel car. I wanted diesel automatic with torque converter and only kia sonet was offering this variant. Company cost for car was 9.15 lacs and after all taxes and insurance on road price was 15.3 lacs. I had my eyes on seltos petrol manual for which company cost was 10 lacs but on road price was 18.5 lacs. 3.2 lacs extra for car that costs 85k extra for company because it falls under 28%+22% gst slab because it is petrol car above 1200cc and more than 4 meter in length. Took me 2 mins to decide and I am so happy with my decision. I just fill her up diesel and go on rides without worries and torque convertor automatic is smooth as butter.
