You will not believe what happened. Wi-Fi timers all going out at the same time. Things could have turned out a lot worse.
In this video I'm going to show you what happens when your aquarium lights stay on for 24 hours a day seven days a week. You're also going to see what happens to an anoxic filter when all water movement has stopped. And if that wasn't enough, you're also going to witness how a Plenum can definitely take care of all biological filtration in an aquarium.

Looking forward to your next answers video. My guess is the algae don’t do well on 24/7 lighting, plus the fish were more active because of increased daylight and nibbled the algae away. Plus, the plenum is mature enough to carry the tank now. You could use the external filter elsewhere. I’m probably way wrong. I expect the ragged fins are from the female Geo defending her eggs.

I think main filter switched off stopped the fast water flow which maybe starved the algae, and the plenum’s slow moving under gravel filtration using the gravel as filtration kept all the water parameters stable. So maybe we don’t need a fast flowing huge filter on our tanks and a plenum is sufficient.

my guess is the flow in the tank was way lower since the filter was off so basically only the plenum was working and its low flow. please don't leave us hanging for the answer because we could all use the help with algae asap.

The bio-load stayed constant as well as the oxygen in the tank. The plenum is your filter and the canister was also in anoxic mode because as you say, the water goes around not forced through the basket. Regarding a reduction in algae of any type, I honestly don't know. Maybe the plants not having a rest period helped take nutrients that the algae would in the off period of the lights?

The Plenum filter has fully matured, the canister filter survived because of the bcb, which is low oxygen bacteria and is self-contained

Great looking forward, but how's it possible to keep the lights on non-stop when you have fish there ??? Aren't they need some good night dark sleep and peace and quiet???

Incredible timing of this video because yesterday my four WiFii timers went out. This is the third time and the app states "something went wrong". I'm done with using them and back to standard plug in timers.

The plants and the plenum were able to digest the extra nitrates and phosphates, exhausting the algae's supply. My hint was that the plants grew more.

The thing this tells me it is the kitty liters negative charge in the aquarium is the best filter you can have. In a shrimp only, or low feed aquarium basically you don't need a canister filter, the advantage a canister filter gives you more clarity & remove excess waste because you have a lot of fish., because it is pulling water through the kitty liter medium way too fast, & this is too high of a high oxygen situation to be anoxic, so basically all you need is an under gravel filter or plenum, with kitty liter substrate in a shrimp tank or low feed applications, I haven't figured out the algae riddle yet, I am looking forward to your explanation. I recently lost my one fan tail Goldfish out of my 29 gallon when she jumped out at night, the only fish in the tank, & decided to make it a shrimp tank it has a 3-inch kitty liter substrate with a plenum, so I took off the on the back filter, to protect the shrimp, and I am just running the under gravel filter, The PH is neutral, no ammonia, no nitrites, no nitrates I boosted the KH & GH with coral to add calcium for neocaridina shrimp, the water is very clear, oh I have guppy grass, & Java moss for the shrimp. In A shrimp thank, you feed very little because you can poison the water if you overfeed.

I can’t say for sure but, with the experience I have gained from attempting to grow what would be known in the hobby as a high energy, densely planted aquascape using plenum and bcb bag’s in my own aquarium, (inspired by your KZfaq channel) I’ll give it a go. All algae thrives in different conditions and the algae that died was in my opinion black beard algae or a type of that algae. In my experience this algae will thrives with high CO2, high flow and especially with high phosphates. Plants will fight off this algae if they are strong and have the right conditions to grow but, it will grow on hardscape/substrate. The plenum is more than capable of dealing with a crazy amount of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate and really should not be underestimated. In fact I believe that the bcb bag in the filter probably is overkill even with such a high fish load in this aquarium. So, I believe that the algae was starved of flow because the filter wasn’t running, the plenum went into overdrive dealing with the fish load(which it is more than capable of), the phosphate and the CO2 was reduced to a minimum as the plants/dust algae grew in overdrive as the light was on constantly. I don’t believe the plenum consumes phosphates but, I’m certainly no doctor or scientist though and I look forward to seeing the next video. I also I personally would like to thank you for your content and I believe it is so potentially revolutionary to the hobby if used correctly.

Thank you very much for answering the question. It was very well thought out answer but unfortunately I wish I did not have to say this, but it is wrong. In my next video, I will tell you the correct answer. I think you will be shocked when I tell you..

Thank you for your reply, it certainly entregues me more to hear the answer and relish the thought of learning more in such a wonderful hobby. My only other guess (which indeed would be a stab in the dark) would be the algae ‘burnt it self out’ for want of a better term under the constant light over a long period. I will eagerly wait next video though and thank you once again.

Under intense 24hrs lights the plants absorb all the ammonium [ammonia dissolved in water] giving no chance to the algae. While it is true that plants prefer ammonium over nitrates, the intense lights also supplied more energy to the plants to also take in the nitrites and nitrates.[ assimilation of nitrates by plants need more energy over ammonium] The levels of lights [intensity] and duration play an interesting phenomena. At certain bright lights levels it may be very ideal for algae growth but not enough for plants. So algae growth is faster. But at higher light levels the plants really takes over. The algae is practically starved. We have not even the other parameters of CO2 or increased incoming ammonium via fish food. It is assumed they stayed constant. It needs more controlled testing to confirm this.

If you put your Plenum on a timer and wanna shut it off, so it is quiet for let's say eight hours of the day then that would be perfectly fine.

Your canister filter has BCB bags in it. The anoxic bacteria carried on breaking down whatever waste was in the canister when the pump turned off. Unlike filter media that only has aerobic bacteria which depends on the oxygen provided by the water constantly being pumped through. As for the second question... I'm not sure but I'm thinking possibly the bacteria in the plenum increased and out competed the problem algae. I'm looking forward to your follow up video.

QUOTE: "Your canister filter has BCB bags in it. The anoxic bacteria carried on breaking down whatever waste was in the canister when the pump turned off." BINGO! A+ You're absolutely right on your first answer. The BCB bag save the canister from going anaerobic and creating hydrogen sulfide. Without it, the BCB, the canister would have been taken apart and cleaned completely and re-inoculated with new bacteria. The second answer is a little tricky though and thank you for participating I do appreciate it. Definitely it sounds like you understand the science behind the BCB that is added to either Ponds or aquariums.

The plenum with the little air pump , protect your aquarium …. mmmmm my next aquarium I will install only the plenum with out canister (more cheap) I guess the plenum work extremely well specially with CLAY And Dustin fish tank said the best way for kill algae is put the tank with out any light (full dark) for 3 or 4 days I think this work in reverse way full light for 3 or 4 days , long time I have frog bit floating plants and I put for 2 days full light blast 24H and I just stop because al my frogbit started to died Plants need rest or they died including algae

Yes, if you think about it, if it wasn't for the Plenum, I don't think I would've been able to come home to a tank that had any live fish in it. The Plenum handle the load beautifully without any help from the canister filter..

You're absolutely right a lot of people will darken their fish tanks for three or four days just so they can kill off the algae. However, if you think about it having a light on for 24 hours a day seven days a week definitely is not a way to kill off ALGAE. LOL!
