Upon hearing from an American that Australia and New Zealand were interchangeable, I realized it was necessary to clarify the distinction. Both countries are wonderful in their own right, boasting unique landscapes and cultures. Join us as we delve into the differences in sports, scenery, and language between the land down under and the land of the long white cloud.

"Albeit sometimes controversially" I had just arrived in NZ, a Yank who didn't know anything about either country, touring South Island in a rental car with 2 Aussies and 2 Kiwis. The entire trip all anyone talked about was the underarm bowl. I never dreamed I'd still be hearing about it over forty years later. Controversy doesn't begin to describe it!

I don’t think the Australian captain who made the decision to do. It had any idea at the time that this many years later, it would still be controversial.

@@FromDownUndertoDownSouth-ym9tq and that, IMHO, is the most disturbing thing of all about the incident: that the man who made the decision to do it decided to order one of the most unsportsmanlike actions in all of cricket without understanding why would be controversial! This is why I had quit paying any attention to sports whatsoever many years before that. It was just blindingly obvious that all the talk about alleged "sportsmanship was just pure BS! It's a meme promoted to sanitize an activity that inherently seriously degrades morality and integrity. In the underarm bowl was a prime example of that. I would never have even known about it if I hadn't been trapped in a car for days with two Kiwis arguing endlessly about the event. And the more they argued the more they convinced me that all talk about "sportsmanship" was just pure BS. All you have to do to realize that it just look at the behavior of the most famous sports figures. With only a few exceptions, notable only because they are exceptions, the closer they are to the top of their sport the more abominable their behavior. Sports are a legitimate form of entertainment. But the idea that they somehow inherently promote ethics and prosocial behavior is in stark contradiction to reality.

I don't understand the constant comparisons, and competitivness between Australia and NZ. Every time Australia is mentioned Kiwis jump into the conversation. Australians really don't care.. We're separate countries, different people... It's so boring. 😢

7:31 tēnā koe for acknowledging He whakaputanga o te rangatiratanga o Niu Tireni (a declaration of the chieftainship/independence of New Zealand) which is was launched by the confederation of chiefs of the united tribes of New Zealand in 1835 along with our first flag. That is a momentous and proud history of ours that is too often ignored entirely, so thank you dearly brother

I’m an Aussie who had a discussion with a kiwi over the pavlova. I knew they had it before us, but I egged her on, why? Because we are friends and see each other once a week. I said ok, we shall put Pav on top of a lamington and we are even lol.we are actually going to try it lol. (There is still some debate over the lamington re Aus & New Zealand lol). We still have to translate sometimes and always laugh over it. Yes kiwi’s and Aussies are neighbours. Just like I’m neighbours with the people next door we don’t have the same ancestry at all.

I know it might be confronting to encounter an American that arrogant. But I’m a New Zealander and frankly; I wouldn’t know the difference between Missouri and Mississippi. I can’t tell the difference between Canadian accents and accents from Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, etc. So I’d be a big hypocrite to get too offended over that. It’s not like we’re very relevant to most Americans and expose ourselves to them much, especially in those Bible Belt states.

Those free settlers working as sealers and whalers in early 1800s are mostly ex convicts and people looking for on edge work. Yes, that right ... Sydneysiders or more generally, Australians. The first 50 odd years of NZ's European history is Australian, run by NSW. The treaty authors are ... yes, you guessed it, from Sydney. Many Kiwis have Australian ancestors. Edit. Important to add the points above being about European history in NZ. Of course Maori history in NZ goes back hundreds of years before Europeans arrive.

not sure how much of your history you've researched but sealing and whaling was a real skill and it wasn't something for 'ex convicts' they usually grew up raised in families doing it (and fishing). they had to know the weather, waves and tides and also if you are talking about whales - how to deal with its fight. as people could be killed. I did a cursory look at it and i didn't see any convicts in Tasmania doing whaling in the 1820s to 30s. Mind you- apparently in the home country they used to scrape bird poop off the cliffs and use it as fuel for fires and light, so a few of them died scraping bird poop.

@@FromDownUndertoDownSouth-ym9tq lol i think their certs would say "fell from a height'.. you prompted me to google the correct term 'harvesting guano". (birdpoop). the used to climb the cliff faces free form.. and scrape it into bags and sell it. the profession didn't last long in Tasmania apparently.

@@thevocalcrone good point. Perhaps "most convicts" is too strong and "many were" is more appropriate. It's also important to note that not everyone on a boat was an expert whaler as the boat needed sailors and all other rig/boat experts eg carpenter. Sealers were based on coastal outcrops/islands and didn't use boats as a means for catching seals. Then there's the fact that catching whales and seals is one aspects and there's the work required to skin, collect oil and meat and fur ... transport,etc. So I've collectively put all these people as one group. There are pictures of ads in Sydney for Sealers and Whalers ... trying to attract young hands (possibly cheaper wage). There were of course other nations around incl the US. But Sydney was the core port (history mentioned Port Jackson or Botany Bay) and convict ships often double tapped as transport ships that turned Whaler and would trade goods in Sydney. The first Whaler ships arrived in 1791 which is 3 years after Sydney is established by Europeans in 1788. Also between 1820 and 1830 as you note, the Sealers and Whalers had all but disappeared because these animals had been hunted to near extinction. Anyway, whether NZ likes it or not, Australia/NSW played a pivotal role in NZ early history. Look up who Busby and Hudson, and Freeman are ... where they worked, lived. Who established the Hunter Valley in NSW?
@thevocalcrone
@thevocalcrone Ай бұрын
@@jimmyboy2 of course, and I didn't even think of all that. I just knew about the fishing and the whaling aspect of expertise and sinking boats because of my own ancestry. I haven't researched them specifically I just made some observations when trying to trace my ancestry (I had a 'new settler to Tasmania marry a whaler), also interestingly NSW may have been the primary state because of settlement but it didn't take long for people to go to Victoria and in fact - a lot of people in Tasmania (that would be the convicts or born from convicts) went to NZ. Tasmania must have been big business at one stage because a couple of mine went there first and quickly left and went to SA or Victoria in the 1830s as soon as possible LOL. Either way I reckon there is a better way to pee off the Kiwis and that is to make mention of the fact that our camaraderie went out the window when they decided to come over here and be the weapons to destroy our living conditions in the 80s working as scabs initially in the shearing industry. I also make jokes of its not part of aussie culture to find out what freebies we can get from the government or how to reduce our taxable income (it wasn't in the 90s) but when you find out how the kiwis are doing it (and if you end up mates with them) they'll let you know every single rort our government offers because they are already claiming it.
