I mean you probably will believe it... but apparently just writing "12th year freelance filmmaker earnings" isn't very sexy in the interest of an attractive video title.
I wanted to share my earnings with you again this year, looking at where I made what, the sorts of day rates I managed to achieve and where I managed to earn income passively - I've always found this interesting to learn from others myself, if for nothing else than if to get an idea if I'm placing myself correctly in the market when it comes to pricing.

Really appreciate people here in the UK starting to be more open about how much they make, this really helps to have a understanding of what's possible and how others do it! Great job on the video Scott, new sub!

Dang, it's already been a year since the last one? Working my full-time day job and gigging on the weekends I felt pretty excited making ~$30k USD mostly as a Director/DP for a 20min doc and then small videographer jobs. Thank you again for helping us beginners better understand the business. I'd love to connect and compare notes if possible.

Scott! The Hero we all deserve lol. Thank you for opening up to us over the past year and sharing industry knowledge that many of us would not have access to if it wasn't for platforms like youtube and creators like yourself. I have become a better cinematographer because of your channel, and have increased my value in my country’s industry, the Bahamas. All the best to you!

Great video, Scott! Thank you for sharing. If you have a second, could you share how you actually track your breakdowns like this? Do you have an option in invoicing software to split out like this, or do you use something for CRM?
@ScottPetersFilms
@ScottPetersFilms Жыл бұрын
Thanks Shaan, there’s no trick to my tracking I’m afraid I spent about an hour painstakingly going through all my invoices on Xero and putting it all in a spreadsheet.

Time to sell the raptor and get the Alexa 35. But seriously... in my market I've seen a surge in Alexa 35 on sets, so clearly clients are willing to rent these systems on what I would have thought are smaller jobs. Would it seem viable to go out and buy and build that camera out, as that may position you to get more days since you're a DP/Operator that can now also rent that kit as part of your package? At least in my market it seems that those guys are definitely getting more days on.
@ScottPetersFilms
@ScottPetersFilms Жыл бұрын
I heavily considered it, but I landed on the Raptor because the total packaged is less than third of the cost of the 35, and I’ve used it specifically on a number of food shoots for its slow motion capabilities. I need to start myself some sort of pension before I spend any more money on cameras 😮‍💨

Great video as per usual. Question: I've heard loads of murmurs from folks in the industry that the start to this year has been really quiet. Has this been the case? Do you expect things to pick up? Are dips in the available work common?
@ScottPetersFilms
@ScottPetersFilms Жыл бұрын
January and the start of Feb was dead for me, January is normally quiet every year almost without fail for everyone, and there’s often a lul for a few weeks at some point in the summer, but I too have heard from a number of people about it being unusually quiet. It hasn’t been quiet for me, but i think that’s because I don’t just do one thing and I’m working in a market of smaller budgets, of which I guess there are more smaller budget jobs than bigger ones.

very honest, why does the videographer job make your skin crawl? Is it because it’s run and gun and it controlled ?
@ScottPetersFilms
@ScottPetersFilms 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, videography work often tends not to be the subjects priority so you have to work around more obstacles than normal, there’s normally a lot less planning involved and elements are often a lot more out of your control. Creating great work is often about lining as many things up for a win as possible and in my experience videography work allows less lining up if that makes any sense at all.
@philvfilms
@philvfilms 2 ай бұрын
@@ScottPetersFilms wow now that’s an answer I didn’t see coming but as a videographer I can toro all see what you mean. I often feel my work is nowhere near as good as I want it to be and it’s partly skill but also massively down to spinning so many plates that have little control. Well said

Out of curiosity, what companies do you trust for P2P rentals?
@ScottPetersFilms
@ScottPetersFilms Жыл бұрын
Only one I can think of I’ve used recently right now is Fat Llama, and I don’t massively trust them as when I’ve had issues in the past their customer service was rubbish, but I think that’s just the risk you take going peer to peer, and now it’s more established at least there’s ratings to go off of if you choose.
