Well, there WERE large scale visible phenomena at Fatima, Portugal 30 years or so prior to this. The sun "danced" in the sky, flashed colors, and the ground and people (it had been pouring rain for several hours prior to the apparition) all became suddenly dry after it appeared to plunge towards the ground. But it's commonly cited as an example of large scale delusion. So. Darned if you do, darned if you don't, huh?
