A lot of you have expressed interest in videos with dedicated topics so I thought I'd do another "what I wish I knew" video because I always intended this to be somewhat of a series! Here I talk about how I filter advice, learning what not to waste money on, natural light, and why I've stopped growing in sphagnum moss. Hope you enjoy!

When it comes to "chunky aroid mix" I couldn't agree more! A lot of well-known growers use a chunky aroid mix because they grow their plants in an actual greenhouse with misters that go off every few hours...its just not feasible for most indoor hobbyist like myself. Chunkier isn't always better. Great video!

Yes, yes , there is so much to learn . I agree that people grow differently, and that's OK that people don't do things the same . I have found that if you go on Facebook to either ask or offer help, fight or bad advice is so rampant. I don't offer or ask anymore . Trial and error is what has made me learn my plants . No one knows your plants like you . I use a chunky aroid mix , but lately, I've been using tree firn fiber, and I love it , but it is expensive. I love my elho pots , but they are expensive. Then I bling them up . I love bling bling on my pots . I love fancy plants and fancy pots . When I think back to how much I spent on pots well ouch ... but no regrets. 😂

I seriously loved this video! You hit on SO many things that I've been mulling over for the last year of my plant journey. It's so validating to finally hear someone else talking about these things in such an honest way! It seems a lot of us that got into the hobby over the last 4 years or so have been coming to similar conclusions but are too worried about possibly being judged or just flat out think they *must* be wrong because they've been presented all of these things as bible on social media for so long🙄 Thank you!❤

I’ve been very fortunate in having a couple of friends who are educated in various plant sciences and have a couple of decades of experience in growing plants, developing hybrids etc. I generally go by the science, I do my own research across several sources and see what seems more plausible/likely to be helpful or factual. I don’t really listen to influencers, but I will experiment with substrates, conditions, nutrients etc if I’m curious, just to see for myself what works for my environment and what doesn’t

In relation to over amending soil, I actually completely shied away from soil altogether and found that using just tree fern fiber with a lecca reservoir at the bottom of no drainage glass vessels works way better for me than any other substrate.

I actually tried all different types of substrates over the last 3 years. Especially trying overly amended soil and it never worked for me. Tree fern is expensive, but it’s worked perfectly with my watering frequency. And I just make sure to fertilize.

Yeah, been using sansi for over a year now and it's been great.... I would prefer sansi had the option to change the light warmth, bc I find it a bit too white sometimes... other than that, sansi is one of the best and most affordable grow lights in the market that I know so far... mother, rousseau, soltech are more aesthetic, but much more expensive...

My pet peeve is people saying you need chunky mix AND terracotta pot. I would kill all my plants in a month if they were in terracotta and chunky mix :) I still do love moss and I use it a lot. But there really isn't any sustainable plant medium right now, pon, perlite and stratum need mining, leca gets clogged quickly and needs frequent replacement, tree fern is from plantations that take over native forest (or is from native plants which is even worse), sphagnum is either farmed or taken from wild bogs, neither is a great solution, and peat just kills the bog and releases tons of CO2. Even coco coir/pine bark while considered by-products can be damaging to environment...(I heard rice husks are a good alternative, they release silica which plants love, I need to check it out :) Still, I guess making your own compost would be the best solution and we used to do that in our garden but I don't have that option anymore. It's just all bad and the only way around it I can see is reusing the substrates as much as possible. Also, using no drainage is a more sustainable option in my opinion, we avoid releasing fertilizers/pesticides to waterways if it's a closed system.
