That was really great to hear and see. The Ahmad Jamal clip was incredible. I found the sounds and tunings of the pianos interesting too. I love a well tuned piano 😊

I came up with Horace Silver as the obvious pianist missing in the list.

Really great to see this. BTW, the bassist with Bill Evans is Chuck Israels.

Did he fill the whole gap between LaFaro and Eddie Gomez? Larry Bunker is terrific here, seems exactly what Evans wanted from a trio drummer. He had a great session career as a percussionist.

Yeah, he pretty much filled the gap, although there were a few others on various projects including Gary Peacock. Yeah, it's a nice trio, there's an album of their's that I played a lot called "How My Heart Sings".@@tedwilsonjr

Great list. Not many folks talk about Bill Evans "Very Early", one of my all-time favorites Bill Evans compositions.

You chose THE Most unremarkable Jarrett moment EVER! There is a video on KZfaq of the European Quartet, in 1974, and the opening piano solo - for Belonging is Out of this World! That would have been much better, or...the Trio with Peacock, and Dejohnette, playing "Love for Sale"!

A staggeringly good list, and as you say probably the greatest generation of all. Can think of a few additions, but who do you drop to fit them in? You're definitely going to have to do an extra generation to cater for Duke, JR Morton & James P Johnson!

Caught this on the Podcast first, which I really enjoy because it makes you focus on the sounds. I'm thrilled to see some familiar pianists to revisit from this series, but also appalled that there were a couple that I knew nothing about. Fortunately I don't have any jazz piano history exams any time soon. 😊 But seriously, this is a great "tickler" for anyone interested in jazz piano from any level.

Could you guys do a video on Bill Evans' last recordings? Consecration and The Last Waltz? His playing is totally different from his early playing. It's like he knows he's dying so he has to get out all the music in him as quickly possible hahaha. Thanks and God Bless!

On the Bill Evans segment, I don't think that is Scott Lafaro, I think that is Chuck Israels. Phineas Newborn is the man I am expecting to ear something about.

Dear Adam Maness and Peter Martin, Thanks for sharing and honoring all those great musicians through all your channels with the 7 greatest (I disregarded when they were born). Some of them were new to me. However, some other really impressive piano players were not on the list: (1) Peter Martin himself - which I did not know before. I am really impressed by his subtle soft dynamics among others. He has his own subtle unique style of playing - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rJOlnsxzm9Cwmac.html AND kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hKiPmaZytMjIiGg.html (2) George Duke, which with his blues touch just makes me speechless - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nrR5ds9pt9vcfH0.html (3) Rachelle Ferrell which expresses extreme strong rhythms with spaces without sound, with inmense strong gospel-music feelings - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hNOKpKyYxpO0aYU.html AND kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rap_Zq2muti9cnU.html (4) Lyle Mays, which Path Metheny expressed great admiration for - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qM9ora-jtqzZd5s.html AND kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bLl9g8KIvd-qmHk.html I would also like to mention Jeff Lorber and Russel Ferrante even though they were more on the synth, which then we would also need to include the great Zawinul (even though he was also great and unique in his beginnings on the Piano in the US with among other Ben Webster - see kzfaq.info/get/bejne/itJ5hJqVq9ivl5s.html - where you can already hear his unique way of using spaces and prases, which is also characteristics of his later 'fusion' playing - see a video of 20 short clips of Zawinul's "unique phrases" (in 20 min.): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/arWUqbWYr8vOm4k.html ) I fully agree with Adam Maness and Peter Martin that there will always be pianists that are great and deserve to be on the list, and which we may have missed. There is simply too much beauty out there of musicians whom express themselves authentically and emotionally deep. Thanks a lot for sharing them, acknowleding them and honoring them.

Let’s talk about living players of this generation like Herbie and Kenny Barron. Who else is still living and playing strong? For one, you all need to go hear the astonishing master Roger Kellaway who just played a hard swinging set at Mezzrows kzfaq.infoa7ffjBfVt0A?feature=share

Dave Hurwitz, classical critique, makes all sorts of interesting lists re classical music. He has delicious admonishments for his listeners re their comments for these lists. No “you forgot , you left out such and so”. No leaving just a name. Comments about ‘Who you like’ without giving some explanation- don’t bother, no one cares who you like. He says he reads every single comment and deletes one’s that are not useful (my paraphrase, not a quote). Get your own podcast. Dave is very worth looking up for his point of view as well as his beyond encyclopedic knowledge of classical music. fwiw

For the greatest generation I would have as a given Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Bud Powell, Thelonius Monk, Fats Waller. Then it gets trickier so 2 from Hank Jones, Nat King Cole, Mary Lou Williams, George Shearing, Teddy Wilson, Errol Garner, Dave Brubeck, Earl Hines, Count Basie. I’d go with Teddy and Dave Brubeck.I’m sure others may differ 😊
