As part of our focus on Young Artists at Oper Frankfurt, this film features the Opera Studio of Oper Frankfurt. Founded in 2008, the Opera Studio is now one of the most renowned centres for talent development in the German-language opera sector. The episode focuses on scholarship holders Nombulelo Yende and Karolina Bengtsson, whom we accompany as they prepare for the Opera Studio Soirée. In this documentary episode, they talk about how they experienced their first year at the Opera Studio, the challenges of their job, and what keeps them motivated every day.
The Opera Studio has a long-standing collaboration with internationally renowned teachers who pass on their knowledge to the young artists in masterclasses. The interview and masterclass with Neil Shicoff is therefore one of the highlights of this episode, in which you get an exclusive insight into the intensive coaching work of the scholarship holders in the run-up to the Soirée. I had the privilege of watching Nombulelo live and it was breathtaking. She literally has the voice of an angel.

"Too Dark"... That was the best sound and placement she made. The voice was freer, better enunciated, balanced and had a more open throated action. As long as the voice is free, efficient and well supported the "too dark" sound would not be an issue. As long as the singer is taught to ascend the scale correctly. Darkness and open throat are interconnected. Depressed singing is dark, but not the same way. I would have thought Shicoff to have a better ear. His suggestions are not great. He lets the singers close off and constrict as they ascend the scale. The African girls sound is hard and pushed forward. She could make a lot better sound. She doesn't support so well either. You do not lift for warmth you go for the right vowel sound.
