Young Black people ‘three times more likely to be unemployed’

One in ten young people in the UK are not in education, employment, or training. That's a record low and is fresh proof that the pandemic has not led to a once predicted surge in unemployment, but the impact has been very different for different communities.
The unemployment rate for Black people is more than twice the rate for the white population, and for young Black people it is even higher.
The government says it is targeting all groups who are experiencing problems in the jobs market. But will it be enough to overcome these long running challenges?

so, how to explain the fact that those of Chinese and Indian heritage are the most qualified and biggest earners not only in the UK, but all over the world? weird kind of discrimination that sees white people promoting Chinese and Indians to greater success than native white people! Consider the possibility it is cultural or genetic, not about skin colour.

I have a 2:1 degree. I graduated in 2019. The only job ive had is in a shop over Christmas. Ive been on UC for 2 years. In that time I've applied for over 100 jobs and got 4 replies. I have a white sounding name and I am white. That hasnt made my job hunt any easier. I don't doubt there are prejudices and pre judgements based on skin colour which mean it is easier for me to get my foot in. That doesnt mean the door opens. Reducing everything to race isn't constructive.

@@musti12312 Thats what I mean. There are some pre judgements and prejudices. Thats wrong. But I dont think it could be categorised as institutional racism only because thats such a big term and refers to actual institutions like government or the police etc. Like I said I don't doubt prejudice exists in some form but I think it'd be more down to the individual conducting the interviews as oppose to the entire organisation if that makes sense. These things can be tackled by education and awareness.

So? I know white people who have had the complete opposite experience to you many of whom were hired just a few months after they graduated. My partner worked at a place where she was training new graduates and a recent hire told her it took her 5 months to get a job after she left uni and she was the last out of her friends to do that. She and her circle were all white and from fairly well off backgrounds

More African Americans of any age would be working if in every profession, they didn't need to navigate and overcome so much bias. In the past, systemic racism was pervasive and it was made legal by the United States government. Some would argue the remnants of systemic racism are still a challenge, but thankfully many racist laws have been repealed since the Civil Rights Act. However, that didn't stop individual bias, which is now the current fight against racism. In my two industries, for example, which are education and real estate, bias runs rampant. The vast majority of America's homebuyers and sellers are white, and they only hire white realtors. Many black realtors, and black realtors in particular, are avoided by the nation's buyers and sellers. This results in a high turnover of black agents being forced to leave the real estate industry, because they aren't being hired as often as white real estate agents. In education, the vast majority of principals who interview teachers for teaching positions at their schools are white females. In my 20 years in education, I've noticed there is a preference for white females, because the principals are white females. Far too often, principals will choose teachers who remind them of themselves, especially in affluent communities where public schools tend to be better supported and teachers get paid more. Affluent neighborhoods is where you will see a high concentration of white female educators and hardly any black educators with classrooms. The black educators are all concentrated in the worst schools in America, because those are the only schools that give black educators opportunities to teach. Not every black person is equipped with the skills necessary to navigate bias. Many people now assume racism is over, so they don't prepare their children for bias, especially bias that is difficult to prove. After many years of trying to get accepted, some black job applicants (with college degrees) might give up out of frustration because they are either unaware they're being discriminated against or they know it, but it would difficult to prove and too complicated to address with certainty. To rid ourselves of bias that prevents people from having a decent job, people everywhere must realize accepting differences in the workplace isn't limited to accepting different skin colors. That is minimal acceptance. You are not truly being accepting of others in the workplace if the people you accept are brown, but they must also talk like you, be like you, and remind you of people you already know. Remember, there are different ways of being, which you must also accept.

So you are suggesting here that someone could be punished for racism without any evidence or witnesses against him/her, just because someone accused them racists, please tell us someone who got punished for being racist without proof or witnesses against them . Lol Dont worry, This type of problems is well known problem globally in many countries states cities. Because most people are simply ignorant and don't like people they dont know or even maybe share same city language accent, let alone race etc, and don't try to even know you or judge you of who you are as a person, try know your character. This type of discrimination is in almost in every country not only here UK . It sometimes could happen within the same people country, like a Scot or Irish living in England or an English living in Scotland or Ireland. Or Like a person working in a state or city he or she isn't from. This news is more about only how to improve the system preventing these types of discrimination

a lot of people in UK do laugh when black people say "its because am black" The truth is there's racism in UK but its not obvious For example we all learn about equality in schools, colleges and universities but when it comes to employment its a whole different world I understand when some people laugh and say "I can't believe they've used the race card" and think that's because of the fear that our country be labelled as racist country The employment system helps the employer to pick and chose who to hire and who to relief from positions And yes there's many cases of favouritism that happens on regular basis unfortunately No one likes racism but it does exist sadly 8n different forms 😔

I am British Chinese and here are my views! I used to blame almost everything on everyone when issues arise. Now, I am more self critical in why I am not getting full time employment. There is racism in this country for sure, not just against blacks, but Asians too, even before the pandemic. Generally speaking even though East Asians are successful career wise. We are the LEAST socially integrated group. In terms of finding a job in the UK, even a cleaning job requires work experience and a DBS check. In China, the government is trying to get people employed by allocating places for working class people to say. However, the wages are lower in China than the UK. Second of all, I used to have a bad sleeping habit, that means energy levels at work ain't stable. Would an employer want to hire someone who is tired all the time? The answer is NO. Third of all, I didn't understand the system. Nearly all jobs advertised saying NO EXPERIENCE, I bet they want previous work references. Where are you going to get this if it is your 1st time? Some of my peers have work with NO qualifications, because they have started at a young age. Once again if I compare this with China, in China they value academic qualifications MORE, even for menial jobs. Fourthly, the law is so strict here! Even if you have all legal documents, they can't hire somebody with no previous job references. This will mean that there will ALWAYS be a division. Finally, I am scared of the social media rule. I used to make videos in English, but I am scared that this will jeopardise my job opportunities so I only make videos in Mandarin now. Wish you guys all the best!

Exactly, I wish we captured better socio economic data to compare. Perhaps I'm completely naive but I just don't see discrimination based on skin tone in my work. There's usually tangible reasons, like accents (important for phone work), not speaking in a professional manner, cultural differences that are reasons for ethnically diverse & people from poorer backgrounds not getting jobs. Whether that's right or not it's consistent regardless of race. So I think we need to look at the real issues instead of pretending it's all about people having issues with black people. If you look at other cultures that are minority ethnicity like Chinese or Indian, the difficulties getting jobs aren't there - at least to the same extent. Chinese people earn more than White people on average. So let's look at culture not skin tone.

We are all guilty of it at some point. One of my lecturers is Sikh and given my experience in a very international university lecturers tend to be from the places they sound like their from. So when he started giving lectures in a precise RP accent it shattered that assumption. Most large companies have non bias training already but smaller companies need it too.

To those who are saying they are white and can't get jobs, you have not mentioned whether you have any qualifications. White working class usually are in family business and trades. They can't get good jobs due to lack of education, but they are more connected and often quite wealthy, compared to black working class, who have to get jobs to get anywhere. But being educated does not guarantee a job. But there are companies which would deliberately hire less qualified black women despite qualified white men. That's also so wrong. Positive discrimination is unfair.

Indians and Chinese don’t have this problem. If they don’t do too well academically, they can usually fall back on their family’s businesses, just like the White Working Class people you mentioned. If that not an option for most blck people, why is that? Do they not have businesses too? If not, why not? Do they have less opportunities than Asians, or have less entrepreneurial spirit? Typically, it’s blamed on racism. Make it make sense!

Huh? So you have special jobs just for black people? Or would you extend that to people who are Asian, Jewish, Polish etc etc as well? What if you're mixed race? Are you allowed to apply? And how do you pick the jobs to reserve? Do you say "all black people can work in Tescos and be greatful for it"? What if I wanted to work as a specialist in endocrinology? Or ethnobotany? Would a job be reserved for me there or would I have to take one of the special jobs reserved for people of my race?
