I’ve watched about 40 reaction videos to Snarky Puppy and this one really made me smile… so insightful. You bring a different approach to your commenting that is very thoughtful and refreshing. For example, I’ve often thought about the lack of ego demonstrated regularly by these band mates, but I’ve never heard it articulated in an analysis. Keep doing your thing. Subscribed. (By the way, I was thinking “Phrygian” mode, too.)

Oh man, loved your comment about Corey Henry and the fact that those guys can put their ego aside, going from top notch solo on a song to the most simple 4 notes playing on the next. It would be great if you'd react to this, you know... from a compositional standpoint. Talk about the key, how they're using it (traditionally vs non, etc). Even a basic breakdown of the chord structure would be great information for other young composers.
@TanguyBlanchard
@TanguyBlanchard 3 жыл бұрын
I get that! Sometimes I do it, sometimes I don't. I think I touched on it a bit in this video, but this is frankly too complicated of a composition for me to grasp it enough on the first listen, so I didn't go deeper into it for that reason

Great reactions man. Nice to see reactions that add something of their own to the songs and especially being honest about your knowledge and experience, and not trying to fake it 'til you make it👍 I would really love it if you coult check out Snarky Puppy and the Metropole Orkest collab album Sylva. It rarely gets viewed, but in my opinion it's their best one yet. The whole album is pure fire, but The Curtain (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oLKCqpByzdeWYp8.html) would be the best one to start off with. Also, if possible, the pair Flight and Atchafalaya are amazing, but must be listened to together. And about Larnell, the flight from the US to Europe was around 7 hours and he learnt most of the songs on the album on the plane. He mentions it on Drumeo's video where he listenes a song once and plays it amazingly right after. Cheers from Finland!✌️

Thank you! Well there is always a somewhat clickbaity aspect to this type of videos, I don't live off of composing so it's a little misleading to say 'young composer' in the first place. Once people are in for the ride I try to be as real as possible. Trying to find the balance y'know. I will check out The Curtain

Greetings Tanguy, you seems happy while doing those vids, i'm glad to see it. Didn't know that song from snarky puppy, realy cool tune ! Concerning that oriental scale you're talking about, it sounds like a B Phrygian major scale aka B Myxolydian b9 b13 ( but I might be wrong ). It is the fifht mode of the minor harmonic scale ( here it would share the same notes as the E harmonic minor scale ). Good vid anyway =) As for suggestion, i would recommend "Flesh and the power it holds" by Death. It is some metal music though so I don't know if you will like it ( or if people wanna watch you listening to metal ), but I find this piece really interesting. Have a good holyday sir.

Awww man I want to get up to speed with that modal stuff. Mickaël taught you well! I'm pretty sure I looked up 'death' on Spotify once and heard their most popular track (of course they're a metal band), I'll do that one for sure. The KZfaq algorithm has its ways so I'm not too worried about diversity. We'll see what sticks! Thank you so much man. I am having fun. Today was a good day too

I actually believe the main composer on this song was Justin Stanton(trumpet soloist). But of course Michael and the other members contribute. Since you are a guitarists I would recommend Jambone from this same album. Its one that noone reacts to.

Almost the entire first section up to the trumpet solo, to my understanding, is based on two chords: Ami6 and B7. You could say that that is in E minor, and that it is a constant unfinished resolution of IV and V7. But right in the next section that V7 becomes the keynote. So, to my understanding, it would be more accurate to say that it is based on the B altered Phrygian scale (V of the harmonic minor scale). It is a characteristic sound of eastern european, indian, middle eastern, music.
@TanguyBlanchard
@TanguyBlanchard 3 жыл бұрын
I don't hear the Am before the trumpet solo tbh. I consider the whole thing to be in some mode of B in that first section (apart from key change) and the Em serving as iii

Don't make assupumtions, bro. Larnell (although he CAN read and write music) learned the WHOLE SESSION in flight just LISTENING to the music that was sent to him from Michael. For the most part, I really like listening to your commentary (or reaciton) to the music. You KINDA know your place in the scheme of things: you seem not to put yourself in the categories of those you're reacting to. So it REAL to ME. Just don't over-step your lane when it comes to critiquing others who have WAAAAY MORE experience than yourself. ESPECIALLY on a PUBLIC platform.

Not as a criticism, but as a tip, it really pokes the listener with a knife when you use God's name in vain. I know it is easy to fall into habits like that, but if you could weed it out of your vocabulary it would do well for both you and for the listener. Keep up the good work! Your channel is great!
