A company in Nairobi wants to install bricks made from plastic trash across Kenya’s capital. Could they become a solution for a country where 90% of roads have never been paved? And are roads made from plastic really a good idea?

@SC: It all depends on the base that you lay your paving on. I have seen 30 mm concrete paving laid for car driveways. What worries me with this product is if they are used for building, and there is a fire. The Mont Blanc tunnel fire comes to mind, as well as the Grenfell Tower fire. I wish the lady well with her venture, but, focus needs to be on paving and non building / water uses. Though, if pipes were made, that could be used for wastewater / brownwater systems. As one of the comments above has eluded to, what chemicals and other things are in the plastics that are used? All of these details need to be taken into consideration when deciding what the product can be used for. There was a video on YT, which showed a Russian enterprise making square paving; not sure of the thickness, but, they were getting tandem tippers to drive over the plastic paving with no ill effects. The weight over a tandem axle group can vary from 16 to 22 tonne, or more, depending on the jurisdiction, and how much overloading occurs!

For those wondering, her business idea was rejected by the Kenyan government. It was proved that there are too many safety risks and that her business does not stop polluting, only encourages it. The US did a test a few back on an all plastic road and it caused a lot of accidents due to the road having a very slippery surface when wet or iced causing the vehicle to have no grip. She is still in business, but she doesn’t have a government contract to replace some of the roads. Also the Kenyan government put a limit on how much of the bricks she can make due to the bricks still being considered trash.

@@alyctro8158 no, that's smart and responsible. Using trash to make more trash in a different way is not the solution at all. Reducing trash at the source, is. Besides, there are indeed health and safety risks with such a material. The microplastic particules contained in the brick would just dissolve over time (from erosion, UV rays, etc...) and mix with dust and water, sending microplastic particules in the environment. WAKE UP. Greenwash. The whole operation is deceptive, she gets awards and constant media attention because US have great interest to continue THE environmental disaster they are creating in Kenya. US have interest to show and subsidize this kind of political right-aligned "enterpriser", while condemning Kenya to be the World's dumb yard. Also the product itself is ecological nonsense. We should stop using plastic, not find new ways to poison our environment with it, while also using tremendous energy to form those bricks.
@symonrocks9847
@symonrocks9847 2 жыл бұрын
@@LyubomirIko So what do we do with the plastic waste, leave it laying around, there are thousands of applications for waste plastic, the reason it's not used is because it's cheaper making new plastic. This process does not require cleaning of the plastic and if enough thought is put into it a high temperature furnace that burnt so hot it produces almost no toxins was developed years ago, that would produce the heat required for this product and a further application could be re processing plastic into it's raw form for using again which will be cheaper than producing new plastic. Negative thinking makes plastic dumps grow, positive thinking reduces the dumps, creates jobs, wealth and better conditions for people to live in, Any help is a positive step forward whereas negative anticapitalist preaching only ensures the starving in having a shorter life.

Your assessment is correct. Notice how the 80s are different from the 90s and the 90s are different from the 2000s and so on and so forth. Every 10 years society changes. It is not just one person, it is actually many people that help make that change happen. This is why no matter what happens, there is always going to be societal change. The corporations and the powers that be, what they like to do is to make sure that they can control the direction of that societal change. If there were more artists celebrated and bought to the forefront of society, then mark my words, you would not have to wait every 10 years for societal change and innovation. But since there is a concerted effort to control what we actually see, then the only thing people are inspired to do is to consume and simply wait for someone else to change society.

I don’t know about that. Plastic in landfills seem a lot safer than plastic in the air in close proximity to our lives. Also, I’m wagering that she can only get prices that low where she lives due to the low wages in Kenya and due to the trash resources being free. Normal concrete is likely a lot cheaper elsewhere.

@@MartiPastrami Better than the e-waste burning they have to strip out the precious metals. Which Dell and Apple contribute towards. I think this is a good idea honestly if they just get some air scrubbers. All I'm seeing is >it's 25% cheaper than concrete >world is having a massive concrete shortage and wondering if someone tries banning it from microplastics concerns. Honestly we're going to need more things like this in the future, first out of cost and reduce/reuse/recycle sentiments, then out of brutal necessity. The time is coming where we'll be strip mining landfills. It's why the present social order is going to fail catastrophically, because the neoliberal Capitalist model can only work with constant growth, and that growth can only happen if you presume infinite cheap labour and infinite accessible natural resources, and we presently have neither, and we are never going to colonize other worlds in any way that would keep the order going (i.e. it's physically impossible to strip mine and mass settle other planets). So as the end result we're just going to end up with a self cannibalizing debt bubble where nothing is owned by anyone but the Musks and Bezos of the world, and all the rest is rented until it implodes on itself.
