In this video we disassemble, clean, lubricate and reassemble an ABU Ambassadeur 5000C baitcasting reel. If you like the video, please hit the like button and if you would like to see more of them, please hit the subscribe button. Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.
If I can be of assistance, feel free to contact me Rick48cj2a@yahoo.com
I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his KZfaq videos I’m afraid Young Martin’s Reels would not exist.

Hi! You did a nice job there 👍 . The two "things" on the spool axle falling of are fiber centrifugal breaking tubes to avoid backlash. Why the several square copper plates in the bottom of the spool tension knobs? That's to center the spool exactly in the middle of the housing. If the spool is not centered correct you'll get more line on one side of the spool. The hole or dent you're talking about has nothing to do to center the spool axle. It's just wear and you can put the worn one in the bottom of the spool tension screw and the other, good one on top of it. The ball bearing does center the spool axle and if you look closely at the outside of the bearings you see that the are rounded. That's for a reason. The bearings do center themselves on the spool axle to avoid the lowest friction so there you need a drop of oil or grease too. The anti reverse dog need a drop of oil on the hole the axel comes in and the copper colored tension plates of the anti reverse dog need some grease on the inside. You can also put some grease on both sides of the toothed plate where the tension plates makes contact. The worm gear for the line guide needs a drop of oil on the nylon bushings on both sides but the gear itself need light grease. The pin with the forked foot that goes in the line guide must be checked for wear on the fork. The closed nut that comes on it has a hole for oil in the slot so the forked pin can turn easy at the end of the worm gear. The locking screw with the small hole in the slot there the handle comes is also for oil. Beware that the screw from older models has are left threaded and open clockwise! The very early ones are from alloy and will crack very easy with to much force. The thread from the star knob to adjust the drag need some grease. I do also reel repair and service for 30 years now and it's fun to to keep the old legends in good working order and can put the oldies together blindfolded 😅 To get new parts are the problem but i still have plenty old stock ABU and Mitchell parts in stock for years to come. Cheers!

@@youngmartinsreels5314Thank you for your quick reply. I did my best because English is not my mother language but Swedish. I hope you did understand all i wrote on the comment. I would like to do vids on YT but time is the problem. I do also rod repair and gun repair and service. I'll try to look one of your vids every day because you do a great job. I've also seen your Mitchell 440 vid too today. I would have had a new correct handle with the chromed dust cover and torpedo shaped knob for that reel 😁 Cheers and please make more vids 👍

I was talking to yiou about greasing those gears. I was surprised by that drag washer. That’s the only thing I didn’t expect. I’ve only worked on the 7000C3 I used to own 15 years ago. Great video Rick. You get better with every video. I’m sending you an e-mail about three reels I just recently got. - Chris. (PS. I only use a small brush for applying grease.)

Thanks for posting this video! I bought one very similar for $5 at a local pawn shop to be used as part of a Halloween-theme decoration ("I Know What You Did Last Summer"). Surprised to learn it's one of the best baitcasting reels ever made, I brought it inside and started working on it. Without your video, I wouldn't have had a clue what was missing (several parts) nor how to lube and reassemble. Despite the eBay parts supplier's criticism (you corrected the washer order during reassembly) I'm sticking with you. Parts guys at the car dealership where I used to work were always critical of the mechanics who actually did the work.

Richard, I’m glad you found the video useful. As for criticism, I’m happy to take it as long as it’s constructive. I don’t claim to be a professional reel repairman. This time last year I knew practically nothing about how reels worked but I’m learning more every day. If someone doesn’t like what I’m doing, I hope they will be kind enough to let me know what I’m doing wrong so I can correct it. Hopefully you’ll get your reel up and running just fine. Let me know if I can assist.

@@youngmartinsreels5314 I don't think it was anything you did wrong. I think it was the order in which those washers/spacers came off when you disassembled. He probably just didn't watch the entire video to the end, when you corrected the order according to the schematic. He's been kinda helpful with identifying and selling me parts that were missing from my pawn shop find, but kind of a curmudgeon when it comes to asking me about this and that detail. Heck, you know tons more than I do. Until recently, I had my Penn reels professionally serviced because I didn't trust myself to do it. But I'm slowly learning. I'll email you some pics of my 5000c when I get done. Remember - a bad day fishing is still better than a good day working.

@@youngmartinsreels5314 is there plastic around the middle of the spools on these reels mine has it I'm not sure why or if it can be taken off, it appears to be a little dry rotted and I'm having trouble finding anything about it, it's a 3 screw 5000c from 1973

Matt, from my quick EBay search I’m pretty sure that black plastic piece belongs there and I would not try to remove it. If you do it will probably break.

Great video, I have 6000 c only thing different I found 5 shim washers in handle side spool cap ? Not sure there should be five maybe 3 or 4 .. Also the shematic I found shows drag clicker ring has tension spring washer 1st then thicker flat washer then copper shim washer then nylon spacer then another copper shim then star adjuster, It will however work in any configuration but wouldn't of thought a thin copper shim washer should be against a sprung tension washer as it could mis-shape the copper shim ? Really hard to see a detailed schematic showing exact configuration. Deano

Delano, are you talking about the brass shim plates? I’ve seen 3 on one reel, but the schematics call for just 1.

I've read a lot of forum posts about upgrading these reels and I've yet to encounter anybody speaking of successfully adding a one-way roller bearing to an Ambassadeur reel that didn't come with one. If you're more concerned about reducing the effort required to turn the handle than about instant anti-reverse, it is possible to find kits for some reels that allow replacement of the plastic bushing with a ball bearing.

Matt, I’m not an expert by any means on the ABU Ambassadeur 5000C. I can tell you that from the 1930s on there were cork and plastic inserts sold to install on baitcaster spools. The purpose of this insert was to take up space to use less line. After doing a quick search on EBay it does look like that reel had a black plastic part over the center. I hope this helps.

Some spools come with a clear, removable plastic arbor. The arbor, when installed, reduces the spool's line capacity, reducing the weight of the spool, making it easier to cast things. See part 8572 in the schematic for the 1976 Ambassadeur 5000C. Check the schematic appropriate to your reel before attempting to remove any plastic pieces from the spool; some Abassadeur spools don't have a removable arbor!

@@youngmartinsreels5314 I lost so many of those tiny brake blocks I decided to stock up. Seems like I lose a block every other time I take the spool out. The reels will run without the brakes but casting certain things, or casting in certain conditions, will be a miserable experience.
