The first five weeks of basic training is comple and the recruits return to Catterick to complete the rest of the course: hand-to-hand combat with their bayonet knife, how to shoot live ammunition, and how their bodies react to exposure to CS gas.
With hundreds of British soldiers killed fighting in Afghanistan, why do young men want to join the army?

Many moons ago I was a young L/Cpl in 2 Para. I decided to leave after serving 4 years. One week before I was due to end my Military Career my Father passed away. I lasted two weeks in Civvy Street and went back in and served another 10. Spent the next 20 years as a Bobby. 68 now and still miss it.

Similar story. I was actually still on pre-release leave. My mum died early of cancer. I rang the battalion asking to come back. 6 weeks later I walked back into the Corporals Mess. I’ve never felt more at home. Good luck mate.

If you don't mind answering, what are job prospects like after serving in the infantry?
@RalphBrooker-gn9iv
@RalphBrooker-gn9iv 11 ай бұрын
@@leonrussell9607 If that’s to me, I served 78-90. 4 Banner tours. I enjoyed it. But could not adjust to civvy st. Two pre-release courses were offered: brick laying abs driver ! I can’t speak for the modern generation. In France, ICYI, infantry soldiers are prepared during their careers for life after service. They do the equivalent of A-Levels. My advice for a young man thinking infantry is plan big; make it a full career; do All Arms Commando and/or P Coy. Think of those as real qualifications. I learned in my regiment if you give 100% you get the jackpot if you put in 99% you get absolutely nothing. For me the infantry is a one way ticket. I loved serving in Northern Ireland. I suffered. Lost friends. Friends lost bits. But strangely I loved it. Few share those experiences. And that’s why, whatever the army can give you to prepare for civvy st, there’ll always be a hole.

Top lad! But also Sad to see his brother drop out of training though.. especially after 6 Weeks.. did so well!! Then to suddenly quit? Understandable way of thinking though especially after what happened to his brother Chris.. totally understand his thought process! But come on lad!! You had a few jitters.. you would've over come that! And gone forward.. and completed your Operational Tours successfully.. proudly.. your a top lad like your Brother Chris! Such a shame you left.. but it was your decision to make. Best of luck to you lad.

Absolute respect to the lads & lasses serving & the lads that stayed in training knowing 100% they're going to fight at some point. When you do go for the first time all that training just kicks in & you totally forget your trepidation. It's their decision but they should have realised they were being trained by the absolute best, no stone is left unturned with regards to your training -- they've far more chance, given that training, surviving a confrontation than the enemy. 38:37 His mum's an absolute star.

Wat utter bollocks If he's already good enough to do the job overseas, he should have been allowed to transfer directly into the Regs and join a battalion.

As an ex service man(navy) 12 years i joined at an age where when you signed on the dotted line you were in for twelve years. Tbere was not a choice of backing out regardless of where you were sent, in fa t we were never given any choice of ship, you were sent there like it or not. I was extreemly surprise that tbere was a choice, after all youswore an oath to go where sent as an order, and i thing it was left to you to come to terms that if something happened, that was partof the life, and believe me, after there tours of active duty one became very much aware of what that statement ment to you as an individual. Looking at it from todays point of veiw i have to say that after such a short time in the service, going to fight a war in Afganistan is a folly of the government, after all this is neither a commonwealth country or one that holds any promise as a peacefull country, there have always been desputes about the place and i can see no sensable reason for British troops to go there, after all, there are troops across the glob who have been sent there but to date no really good reason for same, and with a past record of deaths and injury, not a healthy place to plant your feet. During my time in active service i have been shot at spat at and show every angle of total disrespect you can imaging, all of which at the time unbeknowns by myself, was being shown on U.K. T.V. I count myself lucky that despite being ambushed a few times, plus loosing a few good friends, i managed to stay in one bit. I do think that the forces are in basis a good personality building set that on takes by joining, possibly this could be described as a binding friendship that takes place from all being in thecsame boat( no pun intended) however i would say to anyone think long and hard about your choices in life, more than anything, start paying attention to the goings on in the world, and decide for yourself if you are just being sent to take part in something that common sence shou,d tell go is a worthwhile objective, or just somebody elses fight that they dont want to go for themselve, i.e. using somebody else as cannon fodder to bulster the ego.
