www.mnhs.org/ Everyone knows the story of the attempted bank robbery in Northfield by the James-Younger gang, when the townspeople rose up to defend their bank and thwarted the infamous would-be robbers. The gang fled the scene and split up; however, the Younger Brothers were captured later near Madelia, Minnesota. Minnesota Historical Society Government Records Specialist Charlie Rodgers tells the story of what happened to the brothers after their capture.

@newagetojo :- Please do a bit of research on this subject and post your results. The replies to your comment are correct...most historical institutions now just require clean hands...not gloves when handling paper archives. When handling historically important firearms, it is still recommended that gloves be worn to prevent corrosion.

One of those letters to the governor looked like it was written in a similar fashion to letters written by my aunt. A straightedge is used for the upper portion of the script, then removed and the lower portion of the letters are finished off. Very arduous but the result almost caligraphic.

Younger Brothers glad I found this. I’m a related Younger. I remember in first grade a teacher asked me if I was related to the Younger brothers. I had no idea. After school that day I asked my mom. She told me no. So I grew up my whole life thinking I wasn’t and answering ‘ no ‘ every time I was asked. Later , maybe my late 20’s , early 30’s , it somehow came out in a conversation with my parents that in fact , we were related to them. I asked , why did you tell me I wasn’t ?? Mom said because grandma Younger , my dads mom , was embarrassed !! I was actually a little annoyed that they told me I wasn’t , and I grew up thinking that I wasn’t. What bothered me was I felt like I was lied to , like finding out when you’re an adult , you were adopted. So then my dad told me some things about our family history. After all that stuff happened , from what dad said , it split the family up. And some Youngers left Missouri and went north to Chicago. Stoney Island to be exact , south side of Chicago. And that’s who I’m related to , Jesse Younger . And Jesse Younger was cousin to Cole , Jim and Bob. And my dad also told me that his dads dad , or grand dad , I can’t remember now , used to go visit Cole in the Minnisota state prison. So that would make him either my great grandfather or great great grandfather. Either way, I guarantee his name is on the visitors list in one of those books. Unfortunately , I’m still stuck in Chicago , lol !! Wanna hear some real irony ?? My dads dad , my grandfather , retired from the railroad !! Now that’s funny. A Younger working for the railroad !! He died when I was a baby so I don’t remember him. So if any Youngers out there who are related say hello. I think it would be neat.

I think I remember reading somewhere that when Cole was captured, that he had something like 11 bullets lodged and/or struck into a leather bullet-proof vest he wore. Anyone else remember about that ? Also, in another movie I saw, one of the other outlaws was laughing at either John or Jim Younger because he had trouble eating, having incurred an injury to his mouth from bullets. Was this true ? and, was it John or Jim ?

Very interesting presentation. However, I noticed that Mr. Rodgers when "flipping" through the large book he did not use white cotton gloves to turn the pages. As a photographer I use those gloves handling my own negatives & important papers. I visited the Chicago Art Institute to view some of Ansel Adam's photographs & also Gertrude Käsebier's photos & was required to wear those white gloves to be able to handle the prints. So, this is just a presentation that concerns me about "archival" protocol. Thank you, Paul Labounty.

Very interesting, I've seen some of the legal documents filed against the James Brothers from this time period in Montgomery, AL. It's amazing how well traveled bank robbers were, especially when one considers they were riding horses. For all the movie glitz, robbing banks has never been a way to make any quick and easy money.

My great grandfather was born in Ohio, was a First Sargent in Gen. Sherman's Army, migrated after the war by way of Kansas City to Dodge City, Kans. where he was sheriff a little while, but mostly a black smith. After traveling back and forth, moved just west of Flagstaff AZ, and eventually to San Diego, CA. If that wasnt enough, there is a record of him applying for his pension from the US Consulate General's office in Acapulco Mexico, as well as a letter from his wife Julia asking for him to come home. So, like you, I've often thought about just how much of the country he saw in his life time. I'm a trucker and have trucked in all 48 contiguous states and most of lower Canada. But I'd say great grandpa did his fair share of traveling in an age when it really had to be an adventure. Also, I read a self-published book out of Texas, written around the time of the First World War, by a man who, as a boy, was kidnapped along with his younger brother, by Indians in the 1840's, from the area between San Antonio and Austin. The brothers were split up, his younger brother going with Geronimo's band. They both wandered as far north as Canada, west into the Great Basin (Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Nevada etc.). The picture he paints of these people is NOT very harmonious with the present-day rewrite of history, but it shows that even native peoples traveled far and wide too. So I guess in retrospect, for the Younger gang to go up into Minnesota from Missouri wasnt really all that far after all? Lol!

LindaBkrWms I'll check, but I can already tell u this: There is a Native population throughout MN, but in particular I was IMPRESSED with the Native people in Pipestone MN. (Down by the S Dakota Border) They have a wonderful Native Am center with lots of information & a book/gift shop run by Native people. It is there that I spoke to A native man & 2 women about NA prophesy, and ended up buying 2 books on it. FACINATING!!!!! Impressive people too, no joke I LOVED talking to this guy. Later this week I'll cal you & we can chat. I'm getting ready for 2 surgeries--I'll have 2 call when Anna is in school.

LindaBkrWms PS LINDA--There is a NA "sacred site" in Pipestone too and people claim to hear drumbeats when there is no one there. Rosemary and Anna both heard them!!!!

The scars are listed in the official records but it wasn't explained. Cole said he had over six wounds from bullets but the records seem to list a great deal less than that. Can you please list the wounds and scars of the three convicts from the official records? Thank you so much.

So, dudes jacket, (or "duster,") is being, "preserved," down in a climate-controlled underground vault somewhere in St. Paul, where it will rarely, if ever, be enjoyed by the eyes of man again, (unless that person is a curator themselves,) left to languish in perfect preservation as long as scientifically possible but for WHAT reason exactly?! If an artifact is just sequestered, hidden away somewhere, it kinda defeats the purpose of any preservation efforts lol doesn't it? If it's just kept out of the public, where it's effectively just taking up space never to be enjoyed or learned from!? How much of our collective History, not only in the United States but around the World, is packed away in a vault somewhere, where MAYBE once in a Century or two somebody will come along wanting to see the original? Preservation absent education is MEANINGLESS. You can't even claim posterity, really. If an artifact is made to last a couple of Centuries and is NEVER, during that whole time, gazed upon by the eyes of a curious soul.

I see a lot claiming to be related. I’m related to Jesse Younger , cousin to Cole , Jim , and Bob. After Northfield , Jesse Younger moved to the south side of Chicago where I was born. Still stuck here in the burbs. If you’re related say hello. Would like to hear from ya.
