Your goals are my goals! I have finally decided to knit a sweater for my husband (who is very knit worthy!) He picked the Stick Season sweater by Rebecca Clow. It's DK and a lovely constructions. I also try to challenge myself with something new. I think this year will be cables. I've done cabled hats, gloves, and the border of a shawl, but not a whole sweater. Spinning-I suggest a shawl quantity (maybe Andera Mowry's traveler shawl?) before a sweater. A sweater's quantity gets to be a bit of a slog. Pausing a long spin is tough too because your rhythm is different each time you start. Socks - watch the vlogs from The Crazy Sock Lady. She really inspires me to knit more socks! She typically knits plain vanilla in fantastic yarns. Happy knitting and happy holidays!

I have a recommendation for you regarding sweater patterns. I had never knit a sweater before but recently took an online class with Ann Budd which was based on her book: The Knitter's Handy Book of Top-Down Sweaters: Basic Designs in Multiple Sizes and Gauges. The book helps you to get a customized fit to four basic sweater styles. You can use any yarn because you adjust the pattern to fit your gauge. You would be able to make sweaters for everyone in your family using the formulas in this book. Because you have knit sweaters before, you might be able to purchase the book and figure it out, but I really benefited from the zoom class experience. People asked questions I would never have thought of, and seeing what each person did with the same basic pattern was really inspiring. I am still working on the sleeves of my sweater, but the body fits me exactly the way I wanted and I am so happy with the results for my first sweater. I find the book has really fired my imagination and I keep seeing garments on tv and considering how I could accomplish something similar with my new knowledge. Ann is a great teacher and I highly recommend you check out her website. She has a monthly newsletter which lets you know what classes she is offering.

I've knit the So Basic sweater by Maxim Cyr twice for my husband. He said the same thing about heavier weight sweaters, but he wears these two and enjoys them. They are very smart looking too.

Love your ideas of goal setting. Hopefully you will get a Pair of Socks knit in 2024 since you are intentionally downsizing on the test knits. Something that has helped me look at my stash of Yarn and Fabric differently is this-- when I see all the Estate Sales with loads of yarn and fabric for sale for pennies, I look at my stash and wonder if that would be the fate of what I have if something were to happen to me tomorrow. I'm realizing I have great stuff that I purchased because I love it and wanted to use it, so WHY NOT NOW. There is will always be more to purchase in the future when I get my stash used up. So my main goal in 2024 is USE what I already have. Purchase only if needed to use WITH what I have on hand. And make the things I've been wanting too, without being on the FOMO train in 2024. I can look at and appreciate what comes about in 2024, but I don't have to purchase it.

Hey Kaci😊 My husband loves the Audierne pullover that I knit him a few years back. I also loved knitting it. There is a lovely cable on the underarm and side along with a small cable section at the back so it has a little bit of cable though mostly stockinette. Hi Kaci, I always love watching your videos! But I have a request to make them a bit more accessible, if you are open to considering that. For me it is very hard (to nearly impossible sometimes) to listen to someone talking while there is music at the same time. My brain is just not able to filter out the 'unimportant noise' from the 'this is interesting information I want to understand'. So it would help me very much if you would do the sit down and talk parts of your videos without background music. Then I would be able to enjoy your lovely and entertaining company while knitting :-)

Love all your goals. For a lot of them I was saying "me too!" to the screen 🤪. I'm making 2024 the year of the cardigan so will follow along with what ones you decide to make. You mentioned men's sweaters. I knit the Alpenglow by Andrea Mowery for my husband. An expensive sweater but he loves it.

If you watch Laura Penrose you may have seen the Single Malt sweater by Jarrod Flood that she knit in 2021 for her husband. Very handsome with some texture at the top. I watch Ststches and Starlighht and her 10,000 yds or bust goal for this year really got me started on knitting from stash. In looking at my projects I was able to knit 70% from stash and want to keep to that kind of percentage so that I can buy special yarn I might 'need' for a project bbut with a focus on knitting from stash wherever possible. I hope your dad is continuing to recover.

I like your podcasts and your content. I can appreciate that paper notes taking is more satisfactory than digital however it is so useful when experienced knitters share notes of their projects in Ravelry so we can all benefit from it . Happy Holidays

I knit the stag head pullover, by Norah Gaughan for my husband. It is worsted weight, but I felt like it was much lighter weight than I was expecting. It is highly cabled but super fun.

Have same notebook. Love to write things down. Much more personal! I have the same test knit goals. I say now more and then I have 6. You are right it forces you to get things done. I make myself trade, yarn for something else becomes the test knit item. I have so much yarn that test knits accelerates the usage.....phew!

Love your goals and intentions. I made Gib II for my partner. Nice pattern, but you might want to change the neckline, as it comes up pretty high.

I just went through all the project bags I’ve set aside with yarn and pattern ideas, then I wrote them all on a little white board. Total is 13 projects!!! I think this will help me prioritize each time I’m ready to start something new, because I can check my list rather than just jump into what’s handy. I stored them all in one place in my studio. After doing that, I also felt like I won’t buy as much new yarn, because I have a sense of abundance (waaaay more than enough TBH!) and projects I’m already looking forward to. Fingers crossed for no new acquisitions, and completion of these ideal projects. 😂 Thanks for another lovely, fun and inspiring ramble, and happy new year to you!! Instead of a complete Frog, finish or let it linger video, you could do a segment where you present 1-3 lingering projects and then potentially work them into your rotation and podcast if you decide to finish it or if you decide to frog it work in what you might do alternatively with the yarn : )

I did the Single Malt in worsted weight wool for my husband. Highly recommend Max’s patterns, especially for men. The fits are great and the patterns are easy to follow.

Hi Kaci! Cutting back on test knits was the best thing I did in 2023. It gave me the opportunity to cast on whatever I wanted to without the looming deadlines of test knits heavy on my shoulders (obviously we do it to ourselves but applying for test knits but the pressure is real!). I decided I didn't want to feel that way or have any resentment towards myself for signing up for more than I wanted to handle and it has felt really good. Tin Can Knits and Moon & Turtle by Kiyomi & Sachiko Burgin have some great options for men's sweaters! I steeked the Academic Vest by Skeindeer and LOVE it. It's an all-over colorwork v-neck vest and you steek the armhole and neck. Cardigans are also on my list for 2024. I have at least 3 in mind...lol. We'll see if what happens!

maybe start with knitting Mr. Youngfolk a vest? That's what I plan to do for my husband. He's more inclined to wear a vest than a sweater. Thank you for your podcast! I look forward to it always!

My goodness you aren't old! Im 69 and use Knit Companion and Ravelry as well as other programs. Its comes down to a matter of preference and thats okay. You do what works for you, no excuses required.

Love your approach. steaking was fun and very liberating. I did not choose expensive yarn for my first one though, just in case. I try to learn something new with each pattern. You are a wonderful knitter/maker and I/we look forward to see what you create

My favorite men's graded sweater I have found is Gib by Andrea Mowry. It is worsted, but I think gauge can be obtained with DK. Also, Maxim Cyr has some great sweater patterns that also keep interest with stitch patterns. I also am on board with knitting more cardigans! I want to be in more test knits as I am currently in my first one, but I will take your story as a cautionary tale to make sure I am only committing to what I can complete while also choosing knits in my queue. "Old?" You are so cute. I'm 76 and while I now have physical restrictions, I am not "old." Old is when you are done looking for new experiences and meeting new people and looking at life/the world differently. BTW, great goals for the new year.

Hello Kaci, I have never done a test knit. I work full time and my knitting time is so precious to me that I will only knit things which are on my personal knitting list.

My husband has loved The Beauceron by Designs by Delz that I had made him. It was a simple color work, if I remember right it was slipped stitch as a colorwork and not a whole lot of floats. The other that he has loved the fit on is Justin's Flannel by Alicia Plummer. He has especially loved how it has fit over his shoulders as they are broader. Both of these are DK/worsted weight, we live in MN so usually lean towards the heavier weights. Good luck finding a pattern, it'll be fun to see what you decide on!

I started a knitting journal at the beginning of 2023 and am so glad I did! I have another ready to start for 2024. One of the first pages will be for wips carried over into the new year so I can check them off when I’m done, or they get frogged if necessary. Good luck with yours!

Im making my husband a Lanark from Creabea, and it is in a wool+cotton blend. The zip up seemed like a solid choice for him since he is more of a sweatshirt guy typically than a sweater guy. Hoping that the wool+cotton will make it more versatile to wear in different seasons.

Is that a string of pearls plant beside you? If so, I would love to know your secret for caring for it. My daughter gave me one and I almost immediately tortured it to death. You've definitely inspired me to start thinking about my 2024 knitting goals! And make sure you set yourself up for success by being mindful of checking in on your goals - maybe set aside 15 minutes once a week to update your knitting notebook; and set small mini-goals, like pick one WIP to start with and try to finish it by the end of February, or pick one yarn from stash to cast on. You are a sweet breath of fresh air! Regarding knitting a sweater for your husband, I have never knit one for mine, but he is also warm blooded, and we live in a temperate climate. But he loves the sweater vests that I have made for him. They're perfect for his air conditioned office. Right now on my needles is the Amos Vest by Martin Storey.

Hi, Kaci. I didn't read through the comments so if this is a repeat ... sorry. I have organizational thoughts. Add a Frog or Finish segment instead of a full episode. maybe 1-3 items per episode that have turned into UFOs. This will help you get through them and keep it from being so overwhelming. Also: Consider making a limited (and limiting) list of test knit categories. One test for a beloved designer; one test knit for a brand new designer; one test knit that's a wild card/free choice. Maybe shoot for a total of 6 for the whole year. Or 6 plus a wild card. And add your goal knits into test knits. For example: test knit a men's sweater for Mr YFK; test knit a steek; test knit socks. If you've already test knit the category, you can't do another because it will mess up your bingo card. hehe. Love your content. Happy and Healthy New Year!

Would Mr. Youngfolk knits wear a cardigan? You could knit him a nice lightweight cardigan - even a handspun and steeked cardigan....so many birds with one stone there!

I wonder if you could combine some goals and feel extra accomplished- like only do test knits for cardigans, etc. 😊 also have you checked out the Eureka Springs fiber festival in the spring? My goals this year include a Slipover and a cabled/textured sweater.

I have a few suggestions for men's sweaters. There is a new Amirs/Brooklyn Tweed collaboration just out called Northern Lights. All the patterns are for men and women. Also, Anne Hanson (Knitspot) has some great men's sweaters. Hope you find the right pattern for your hubster.

I love this episode, so inspiring and I can relate to a lot of things here. For your husband pullover I recommend El Puntal de Belen Fernandez. Although, I'll knit the Moby sweater to my husband in 2024. One of my goals for 2024 is to try steeking too! but not a garment haha. But my highest priority is to finish my wips!!! Have you ever heard of Finish it February? The idea being one works through as many as possible and then give yourself permission to put it away for another year.

Totally feel you on sizing! I also have a large difference between my high and full bust and picking by my high bust gives me the best fit for sure. Learning about adding short row bust darts has been such a game changer as well, highly recommend trying that out if you haven't before.

Love your goals, and I share many of them, except for that buy less yarn thing! Inspired me to at least think about my intentions for the year. I want to suggest The Knitters Dude by Andrea Rangel which would fit some of your goals. I made it for my son and it's steeked. Loved the pattern so much I made it for my daughter too. Another sweater I made for my husband that is just gorgeous is the Letho We by Natasha Hornsby. Finally, I'm knitting The Moby sweater by Petite Knit which comes in sizes for men as well. It looks quite cabled and complex but is not. Much simpler than it looks in terms of cables.

I made my husband Jane Richmond’s Mens Classic Raglan Sweater this past year. I used a woolen spun worsted weight yarn. It’s a great pattern.

Oh I can SOO relate to the part of not finding the right size based of the chest measurement, for some reason armholes and shoulders are always too tight on me when choosing a size based on the chest measurements, so this makes a lot of sense! Your goals reminded me for my goals for the next year which is pretty laughable. I need to knit sweater for myself instead of knitting sweaters for my husband, my kids, other people. I need to knit something for myself… I did’nt ! I know this is crazy, but I didn’t. I did half sweater, then a frog it so, I need to knit something for myself. And for the steeking part, I’m really interested in steeking and I would love to try seeking to because I think it’s easy way to get a sweater without purling so much, but the steeking part is so frightening and intimidating me. I would love to try that too.

My husband really likes the Jaiden sweater by Isabell Kraemer that I made him.

Thank you for sharing! Wishing you happy holidays and success in all your endeavors! You mentioned tips for men's designs and tailoring garments to your body. I would like to share some suggestions that I found most helpful: 1. For menswear, consider exploring patterns by Brooklyn Tweed. They have male designers designing for men. Men have better understanding of fit and designing for male bodies and have lots of interesting silhouettes. Predominantly female-oriented designers usually have men’s garments that look more unisex and sometimes even look like ladies’ fashion adapted for men, which doesn't always convey a "male" aesthetic. (Most men I know want to look masculine in their knits.) 2. Fitting garments to a unique body shape and learning how to do it with knitted and sewn garments is much easier and faster with a dress form! I have fit issues similar to yours (14” difference between bust and waist), so I have to modify every garment I make (if I don’t want to look large in all wrong places). I bought a cheap dress form ($100) and padded it to have the same exact measurements as my body, so now I use it to try things on, to calculate increases or decreases, and to generally critically examine if a garment looks flattering on my body type or not. Dress form also allows to test how materials (yarns or fabrics) drape or stretch on my body, again helping to achieve the best possible outcome. (Bonus: you can use the dress form as your model to show finished projects, so no need to photograph yourself!) P.S. I've also discovered that being more critical and merciless with my WIPs helps me maintain a productive pace and avoid projects that either burden me or take up space and materials that I could use for something better. I generally categorize the things I make into two groups: those that spark joy (great fit, high quality) and those that I need to unravel/donate-nothing in between. I've noticed that having too many WIPs can start to feel draining and even affect self-esteem ("I can't finish/organize things", etc.)

Have you thought about a cotton merino mix for your hubbies sweater? It'll be cooler

6:52 35 is not old. I'm older than Epcot and I rely on digital modes of recording things because I can't be trusted to write on paper and still keep track of said paper. I gave up on journals a long time ago.

I just finished knitting my first sweater for my husband this week! I knitted the Fort sweater by Jared Flood and really enjoyed it. The only modification that I did was to exclude the elbow patches. I also liked the Whispers pattern by Les Garçons and think that will be my next one for him. ☺️

OMG, did you say you’re “old” at 34?!? Whaaaa?!? Perhaps because I’m Gen X (turning 50) in January, I appreciate having Google (instead of microfiche) for research and my notes app instead of all the little notebooks I used to use and lose. Now, I type my thoughts and to do lists into my notes app and I can search for key words to find notes I wrote days, months, even years ago. Now if Apple ever dies, I’ll be I trouble, but oh well. At my work, you’d be one of the youngins. ❤️
