I had an English teacher in the 10th grade who thought Simon and Garfunkel were the best poets of modern times. We spent much time listening to and discussing their works. I developed a great appreciation for their music. All of their music are works of art.

Yay! As a high school English teacher, I'm always happy to know that some of us leave a mark. When I was in 10th grade, I shyly approached my English teacher about analyzing the lyrics of my favorite pop songs from the 70s, 80s and 90s. I thought the whole class would be into doing the same. She sniffed, "Well now, Jane, this is not really poetry, is it?" (She was a crummy teacher and a bleak person.) Whenever I invite my students to bring in songs for us to discuss, it's thrilling. I try to do it once per semester. They learn to find deeper and broader meanings. They gain respect for different styles and eras of music, and they learn how to teach each other. Infinite wins!

I'm curious, what year were you in 10th grade? Just wondering how old the music was at the time you discussed it in an educational context. As an aside, I agree much of their music is beautiful poetry.

Music now days means nothing. And I can't say any of it is art. Been a while since we had anything really amazing, I feel like the last few worthy songs were lady Gaga. And I mean, we can do better than that I think. Btw to the one comment about Christians and shotguns, how's the weather over there in left field? Cause you're way off base. We're talking about apples and you come in talking about oranges. Typical alpha generation. 😅 If you don't like this kind of music, then WHY ARE YOU HERE?!? 💀 Btw, people who listen to this kind of music were hippies back in the day, or children of the 60s either way. Very far from conservative, though I'm sure some of them are Christian, it's definitely not the majority of listeners. You really need to learn your stereotypes if you're going to do all that. It's like you're looking for a way to spread negativity. And on a Simon and Garfunkel song no less. Your generation is so boring you have to annoy the other gens. No cap. Get a hobby. It's healthy. What you're doing here isn't. You choose how you use your own energy. Life lesson over.

@@user-wq7ro7ck3j The song could be interpreted as the big city lights people become mute by living their lives with anonymity to all the other 'ignoring' people around. Only advertisements like neon writings and posters 'speak' to the people, but graffities too. And by this the silence grows like cancer, seperating the people. Instead they should wake up from their sleepwalking, and respect and interact with the others. Getting them out of their isolation by taking the arms and 'hugging' each other. Do not ignore the people around you, even not in the anonymity of the towns. Keep to hug and interact with living beings as a living being!

The Sound of Silence Lyrics [Verse 1] Hello darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains within the sound of silence [Verse 2] In restless dreams, I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a street lamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night, and touched the sound of silence [Verse 3] And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never shared And no one dared disturb the sound of silence [Verse 4] "Fools," said I, "You do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you" But my words, like silent raindrops, fell And echoed in the wells of silence [Verse 5] And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls And whispered in the sound of silence"

"But my words like silent raindrops fell and echoed in the wells of silence." "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls." ... Basically they entire song. He feels sad and alone and is sitting in the dark, communing with it and he is talking about how the people of the world need to come together and really listen to each other to solve the world's problems. Reach out to each other, LISTEN, don't just talk at each other or over each other, really listen and don't stay silent about problematic issues. We need to talk, reach each other learn how to communicate and listen and show empathy. And that you are not going to get answers from material things, gods or the rich. Listen to the poor and people who have nothing, they just might know how to end those problems, stop ignoring them. Yes, they're poor and you can ignore them and shove them into slums and tenements but they are the people you really need to speak with and care for because you are only as strong as the most powerless members of your society. They leave messages in their graffiti that people; think of as ugly. CARE about each other and not things. Stop telling people with the truth to be quiet. Stop listening to the wrong people. You're worshiping the wrong things and wrong ideas. Listen to people with important things to tell you, whether you like what they say or not. That is the meaning of the song.

The sound is soothing and smooth, the words are simple and powerful, the imagery is vivid, and the meaning speaks for thise who are prepared to listen and ponder. Poets are the truthhspeakers.

This song is amazing because it could mean so many things, there is something in the sound of silence, but what hides in the dark may not always be the same, and the neon light may be a god or nothing but a lie. For me this song was about discovering who I was, the silence is my soul, it is full of the greatest hopes, and the darkest desires, it is not a good or bad thing, it simply *is*, the neon light is who I want to be, I created this image, and it is not purely me, it is who I am to you, as while I must be honest, everyone has an inescapable part that they simply can't show anyone. And even if I showed you everything, I simply don't have a true "personality", I am the most optimistic pessimist I've ever met, I fit in every stereotype of male teenager other than jock, and maybe a few female ones. The only definite traits I have is a litteraly deadly sense of empathy, and the weirdest inferiority complex I've heard of.

This is really profound for a youtube comment. I guess you can expect that on a Paul Simon song.

I was brought here after reading an article about Art Garfunkel and his old friend that went blind. The story about the song's first line. I now too just realized how poetic this song is... ♥️

I love this version even more than Disturbed's version. I really love Disturbed's version or cover, but to me Simon and Garfunkel is also great. If you just turn the music up and really hear it, the original was absolutely amazing. Especially since Simon wrote it.

An absolute classic. This song has individual meaning to each one who listens to it, and that is it's magic. As for the sound of silence best to reverse this and give the silence for the sound and lyrics and enjoy.

Hello darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence In restless dreams, I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a street lamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night And touched the sound of silence And in the naked light, I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never shared And no one dared Disturb the sound of silence "Fools" said I, "You do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you" But my words, like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming Then the sign said, "The words on the prophets are written on the subway walls In tenement halls" And whispered in the sound of silence

This song shared my feelings about the world itself. I see people denying the truth about reality, talking about random staffs, doing random things, yet, ignoring the truth. Those who sees the real crisis of the world are hushed into silence or ignored by staging political drama. Real voice become invisible. Silent.

I think the original 1960’s version by Simon and Garfunkel is far better than the one by Disturbed. It’s more authentic, sincere and heartfelt, not to mention it sounds better. I grew up listening to my dad play it, he would of been about 22/23 when it was first released.
