It’s certainly easier to make assumptions about people than it is to spend time getting to know someone. We wanted to put assumptions to the test to see what we're missing out on because we're so busy assuming we already "know" a person. Join us as we discover why you should never judge a book by it’s cover in our series, Reverse Assumptions.
We are all conditioned with certain biases. In this experiment, we challenged these biases by asking people to make assumptions about their partner's appearance without ever actually seeing their partner. When they flipped around to finally face each other, they were shocked by how wrong they were.

People assume I'm a masculine guy, even though I don't really have any typical masculine interests and I like cute animals, musicals, clothes, and wearing make up. I guess I don't mind playing football (soccer) but that's about it. I don't really bother watching sports unless someone I know is playing.

People think I'm around 12-14 years old most of the time and thats why I get asked for my ID a lot. I'm actually 20 lmao. Another thing is that almost everyone asked me if I'm Polish or Russian because I seemingly look like that but I'm 100% German. Thats why I think this series is so interesting. I would like to do something like that too, just for the experience!

People assume I'm younger, because I talk in a friendlier voice, which makes me sound younger. Then, even if they see me, they think I'm younger, because my family ages well; we all look younger. What's annoying is when they think I'm younger and assume I'm less mature too.

The guy being awkward in the end about handshaking or hugging made me think about the fact that people don't really know how to approach things with a person with a disability. I have been visually impaired...aka legally blind...since birth. I always wondered why people seemed kind of awkward around me...then one of my co-workers was in a wheelchair and I started to understand the whole thing. I didn't know what to do with her...that sounds weird, but now I was the one in an awkward situation. My job, and hers, was to help people with disabilities get jobs, so I got a lot of insight from my friendship with her...and vice versa. I finally just said to her..."I have never had a friend in a wheelchair, so tell me when you need help, because I don't want to make you feel that I am constantly aware of your situation. I am more than happy to help you if you need help, but I won't usurp your independence." I told her to do the same with me and that I would let her know if I needed assistance because of my limited vision. I used to see people on street corners with white canes and a red tip...others would just walk past them without asking if they needed help. I think they felt uncomfortable and didn't know what to do...or if they should do anything. You really don't need to do anything in that situation, but you might say "hello" to let them know you are there...then if they need assistance, they may ask you. Most blind people travelling alone on the streets know exactly where they are, but suppose the bus driver let them off at the wrong stop...or some other odd thing happened? Most people are very kind and want to be helpful, but are just unsure how to go about it in these situations.

Melissa Govender Honey I know, but that's not what I meant. What I meant was what country is she from IN Asia. I'm Asian as well, but most people in the States wouldn't consider me such since I'm from Turkey and don't stereotypically look 'Asian'. However that does not change the fact that I'm Asian and I have the right to call myself such. That's what I was wondering about, is she from let's say China, Oman, India or Armenia? All of those countries are technically Asian but they most certainly don't share the same culture, hence why Asian is a very vague classification imo and quite problematic

I wanna do this because people get so much wrong about me lol like my sexuality, my I guess ancestry cause no one like ever guesses that I have Mexican lineage like my grandmothers family is from Mexico. That german girl is nice on the surface but she's slightly cold and distant. The black guy was lovely. The other two were very sweet . Mature and had a good connection. Lovely pair.

ksam pco She's not German tho... she's "of German heritage." I know, I know, let's not be overly dramatic over this. I just can't stand when Americans do this. What just came to mind: you might also subconsciously find her coldish because you heard "German" and, as many would, try to look for things that match your idea of Germans. Cool video anyways haha. I personally found her pretty warm and easy going. Anyways. It's a cool series that reveals a lot.

Anna Lucia She could be German-American. I was born and raised (and now living) in Switzerland, but in the U.S. I would say I was from N.C. (where I lived for most of my life), but was originally from Switzerland. Overall, I present myself as Swiss-American, so I didn’t find her comment odd.

@@Evieteresa I understand what you're saying and there was certainly some assumption in my comment. Of course there are American citizens who have experienced socialization from outside of the U.S. and still have family ties in other countries. Perhaps the woman in this video is one such person. The people I was referring to though are those numerous Americans who base everything on genetics and confuse cultural & national identity with race & ethnicity, often for the sole purpose of having something more to say than "I'm white American. Full stop." I don't agree with this type of mentality at all because identity is a lot more complex than DNA.

Usually, people think I am between 17 and 23 (I am 33 years old), they think I'm a wild partygirl (my wildest party is to go to bed at 11 pm after a pizza and a herbal tea...). FIrst off....Mariam is beautiful. Those strong cheek bones and her incredible smile.....wow. And her eyes.....forgetaboutit! Secondly, O'Shay should never feel that being sensitive is a bad thing. There are far too many people in this world who feel nothing.....for a person, especially a man, to actually feel emotions and to feel for others....that is a great thing. I am a sensitive person, a man, who has been told that my heart is my weak point because it makes it so easy for people to take advantage of me.
