In June 2011 I planted an avocado tree from a seed from my Dad's tree, which we planted in 1959, also from a seed. I grafted my tree with a graft from my Dad's tree as well. Both my Dad's and my tree produced in three years and continue to produce today. Don't know what variety either tree is but the fruit is good and sweet. -Doug in Carson, CA

Your knowledge and willingness to share is so appreciated. Whenever I have some free time, I watch a few of your vids even when I have no plans on growing the subject matter. Avocado trees is something I have been pondering on, I am now armed with much more info (thanks to you), will move ahead with the plan.

Thanks for your videos. I've learned a lot. The more I find out about avocados, the more impressed I am with my little plant... I just put and an avocado seed into a small pot of soil around January/February (we were still getting winter-weather here in the UK). The seed sprouted and grew to a couple of inches before it died. I thought that was it and left it for a few weeks (on my radiator). When the worst of the cold weather passed, i started watering it again (hoping it would have another crack at growing), and it did! :D hopefully, it'll carry on

Thanks for the avocado information videos, short and very informative. I have a 2 to 3 year old Brogden and a recently purchased Lila. I am waiting patiently for the Brogden to produce. They are both grafted trees. We had a couple of unexpected freezes this winter in n central Florida and I didn’t have the Brogden quite protected. With the 1st freeze, the leaves all fell off (it was growing so well). In 2-3 weeks I pruned it back to where I saw green on the branches thankfully! The 2nd freeze I protected it well. A month or so later (March/April) I was amazed, there was green buds popping out everywhere and it’s growing well again. The Lila is a semi dwarf tree and is quite cold hardy. I’m growing it in a pot until next year.

God bless you for sharing your insight and knowledge on growing avocado trees .Looks like I'm going to be shopping for a rootstock grafted tree here in south Florida .I have seedlings growing from store purchased avocado but if it's going to take 1O yrs or longer for them to bear fruit and you mention it's a gamble might as well invest in a nursery grafted tree .

Though it is true most of the new varieties of avocado are doing fine in self pollination, it is best to have two cultivars to get the best results as some of the varieties have A type flowers (like the Hass, Pinkerton, Reed) that are receptive to pollen in the morning and shed pollen the following afternoon while B type flowers (like the Etinger, Fuerte, Bacon) are receptive to pollen in the afternoon, and shed pollen the following morning. That said, in urban gardening if the climate is good, it is very likely that you are not the only one growing avocado cultivars in the vacinity thus making the need of a second polinating tree irrelevant.

Loved your video, especially the little bullet points you posted. I am a commercial Avocado Grower in Southern California. Just would like to make a comment on harvesting in Southern California. I have over 18,000 GEM trees on my ranch, so normally you don't want to harvest the fruit till at least late March as the "Dry Matter", aka oil content is not at its optimum. GEM are at their prime after April, when "Dry Matter" is above 27%. GEM can withstand cold till about 25* F, after that you may get some damage.

Looool if u have freezing winters u can have its pot live on a wagon so u can easily move it. If you know someone with an avocado tree with good avocados, you can try growing from seed and grafting them yourself, there’s also a lot of tutorials on how to do that

Hi from New Zealand. One nursery has recently got the sole permission to supply the Gem variety here. I am hoping to be able to purchase 2 or 3 trees when they become available in August. We have a couple of mild frosts each year in my area, would this be a problem? When you do future videos, could you indicate the season as well please, as the months are a little confusing on this side of the world. Hi!! Great video.. I finally found the Avocado name I told you about with thin "edible" skin. (It is delicious!) It is a Mexicola and I am reading that it can withstand cooler temps (I'm in NorCal) than the Gem (I heard 30 and even 20!). I have one growing from a seed, but after seeing your video I am understanding that I will have to wait for a very long time for fruit!!! So I just ordered a more mature one that promises a crop within a year. I am hoping it works up here! I will let you know!

love avocados. I live in the countryside. My mom and I planted an avocado back of the house. It took three years to give us lots of fruit but when hurricane Maria came it stop giving fruit. This year I started to give it coffee tea with Epsom Salt and my cousin call me to tell me that my tree has avocados. Her avocado also Stop giving avocado but I told her that this year give it the tea every 2 weeks see by next year you mght have avocados. My avocado came from her avocado tree. Now I'm growing another avocado from seeds of another tree from another cousin's tree. The avocados are resistin to rot. They last a long time.

However, the summer reaches 110 degrees Fahrenheit here, and winter reaches the low 30s. The GEM has been so elusive, so I ended up buying a Hass to plant here in Temecula/Menifee/Murrieta area this morning from a nearby nursery. Even the nursery guy sounded discouraging, 'coz he said that avocados don't do well in our area because of the cold winters. I am still hopeful and will follow your suggestions on how to grow an avocado tree here in SoCal :)

I live in a trailer park in Bakersfield. About 5 years ago we planted an avocado tree, purchased from Home Depot. This is a full size tree so to eventually block the afternoon sun from the trailer. Every year it will flower and start producing fruit. It drops the fruit when it gets about 1 inch long. I won't bore you with all the things I've tried, but it is everything from raking the leaves one the ground and crushing them to put around the trunk to watering a certain way. I even built a patio around the tree! Please help as I'm out of ideas. All my citrus trees produce massive amounts of fruit.

Just FYI for SoCal, I found Gem at speciality nursery and the cost was $100. Steep but after watching several vids on this channel I was convinced it was correct for my yard. Got a couple of questions though... 1) santa Anna winds snapped the top 2 inches off the tree while still in the pot. How's it going to do given main stem no longer there? Something special I can do for it? 2) planting in ground this week. Some of the leaves have brown swathes on them. Is this disease or just normal? Thx for the help.

Avocado from seed can fruit as soon as 3 years if planted in tropical or subtropical lands. With good soil and water.
@CaliforniaGardening
@CaliforniaGardening 3 жыл бұрын
Yes they can. But not all will. Lets say you grow a thousand plants from seeds and a thousand from grafts. Each of those 1000 grafted plants is guaranteed (scientifically) to produce fruit true to the parent. The seeded ones may or may not product fruit (some of the thousand may) - and it may not be same as the parent. Hope that helps!

How often should you fumigate the avocado trees after they start flowering?
@USSBB62
@USSBB62 8 жыл бұрын
According to University of California at Davis California. The "Bacon" variety is the most cold tolerant. I have had several sevear frosts on my 33 year old tree and each time all the leaves fell off. But several weeks later they grew back without any noticeable harm. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, much colder than Southern California. "It ain't a Hass" but still has great nutty and buttery flavor. PS. Surprise, you gane lots of new friends at harvest time. Check your Degree Days for Avocado growing and ripening. Each variety is different. Up hear in the SF bay area. The degree days are not enough for a full season. So the fruit hangs over winter untill the following year. It ripens about full bloom so its eary to know when there ripe. In a cool year it takes longer. Having full sized fruit and small olive size hanging at the same time. So check that Degree Day amout carefully and buy the one thats will ripen or its all for naut no matter what you do. Please check "California Gardening" or "UC Davis.edu" for an explanation of " Degree Days"

Thank you for your informative video. I'm in CALIFORNIA and live on a property with a very abundant avocado tree. I have attempted to plant a seed into water and have a tiny tree forming(from kitchen window sill). Interesting that it may or may not ever produce avocados. I made the mistake of placing other seeds outside and many appear burned from the direct sunlight. Has this damaged the nutrients inside the seed? Could they be salvaged and placed in a semi shady/sunnier area??Thank you

I bought and planted avocado tree almost 2 years ago and some reason it's not growing and not dying either. somehow I noticed recently 2 sucker stems are growing from the bottom of the trunk and looks very healthy. Can I cut the suckers and plant? Would they grow into healthy mature trees?

If you use a particular type of fertilizer that is low in nitrogen and high in phosphorus and potassium can you force the avocado tree started from seed to grow fruit faster?

I have a avocado tree that is getting very tall. It is a 15 year old tree I think is fuerte or hass. I want to prune it. And make it more manageable. If I cut some of branches that their diameter is 30 centimeter would it damage the tree?
