Mid Hants Railway 'The Watercress Line'

This week we're in the carriage works for a guided tour looking at some of the projects underway. We also show how we can keep coaches looking original whilst using modern materials to prolong their life and make them accessible to a wider user base.

Would be great to have some more information on some of the longer term loco projects, ie 73096, 34105, 45379 and perhaps how the partnership between the south based heritage lines works/is working. Keep up the good work though, always good to watch.

Our Grandson and I had a great trip over the line last year and the ride was very smooth. Well done chaps; doing a great job. The re-use of old wood always makes me feel good - most of the wood I use in my hobby is re-used. I bought some Ash the other day - it cost a packet!

Great video, very informative. What wood is used for the replacement roof? Topics: 1. Covered loco/carriage storage: should it be a priority? where could/should it be? Otherwise all this work is being wasted...discuss. 2. Timetables on preserved railways: why is the Watercress no longer a turn up and travel timetabled railway? who cares if the enthusiasts therefore don't come anymore, does it matter? 3. I'll get my coat

The railway took a pre booked ride policy over Covid due to distancing requirements, this was removed in mid 2021 and returned to turn up and travel timetabled railway as you put it

Hi@@benskelton1723 Thanks for explaining the background of the recent COVID era changes. My point re the MHR being more that there are now no published timetables for large blocks of the school holiday periods. I appreciate that the MHR has to make money to survive, and that times are hard. As someone who has been visiting since c1980, with family too, I am alienated by finding myself practically shut out of attending between 29th March and 14th April as there are no published timetables on the website. It effectively sends a very clear signal that casual visitors (enthusiasts or not), who want to turn up on a given day and travel on the trains, even if they are happy to pay the additional fare for the event, are not catered for. Try planning on visiting the MHR between those dates and you get a "Book (event) tickets now" wall and no information on when trains are running. Same thing last Christmas/New Year. All event only. No traditional twixt Christmas and New Year winter sunlight run up the bank through the chalk hills available. Just night time lights events. There are a lot of people, who might be up to 20% of the MHR's traffic on any given day, who will go somewhere else, because they just can't plan their visit. I'll be taking my son to the Bluebell over Easter, partly as he's too old to search for Easter Eggs, but mainly because I have no idea how to plan a day on the MHR between 29th March and 14th April either. I'd rather be blasting up Medstead Bank any day, I should add. 🙂 all best, Matt

I’d like to see like a pure “un-edited” run from the whole line on one of the steam locos. Like a webcam showing exactly what the driver, fireman & cleaner does during each section.

My suggestion would be to explain and perhaps show how a train is accepted from Network Rail and returned to Network Rail. It would also be interesting to know or have an overview of how the automated signalling works for normal Watercress Line trains at Alton.

Hi Will, how about covering the safety and other requirements for setting up line side for filming? I rather doubt that you can just start filming wherever you fancy!

That post Boiler certificate boiler inspection should go well, for your beloved steamer, unlike what happened to a certain US locomotive a few years ago, which will not be returning to steam due to the fact that the entire thing has been run to the point that she's beyond worn out.

Please can we see some detail of the 3 cylinder West Country/Battle of Britain - in particular the configuration of the middle cylinder and it relationship to the other two. Thank you. Jeff
