10 years ago I bought this drumset that you see in every one of my videos. When I first put it together and started playing it, it sounded awful. The toms weren’t resonating and the snare had an unmusical buzz. The kick lacked low end and the cymbals were ringy and gross. Now, however, the kit sounds pretty good. I’m showing you today what I did to overcome these problems and get this kit sounding more professional. I heard the saying from an experienced drummer: “It’s the Indian - not the arrow.” He was talking about how the drummer is the #1 factor in the quality of sounds he or she produces. I began recording myself and listening to board mixes and really evaluating my playing, and advice from a drumming mentor helped me to pinpoint the biggest issue in my playing. It was inconsistent. I began to learn that I needed to put a much bigger focus on playing with consistent dynamics and getting good sounds out of my drums. When I did that and I cleaned up my playing, my drumset began to sound much more professional and polished. We wrap up today’s video with six practical exercises designed to direct your playing toward cleanliness and precision.
