Absolutely loved this demonstration. Such a thorough and easy to understand explanation. Heard all the characteristics you pointed out in each example. Each plugin leaves me still thinking somethings missing and wanting to add some other plugin after it. Which sucks if you're stuck in the box and your hardware isn't available.

Fantastic video Dave! Thank you URM for providing so valuable content. Dave really describes every unit in so much and accurate detail. I actually hear everything he says and I can hear these differences with my own hardware 1176 style comp as well.

Cool video Dave! I actually hear the hardware unit also had more low-end, which I guess would be more significant on a lower-register instrument. Those audioscapes sound great!

I always struggle to hear some of the elements that mixers describe in videos, but I think this is the first time everything he said I was hearing and agreed with.

I only use my hardware 1176 for recording for the tone and character before it hits the converter. Afterwards, during mixing, the cla 76 works just fine.

Really nice comparison, I own all 3 plugins and I always end up using the Purple for rock and metal. I'm pretty sure you already know but, try lowering the headroom knob on the Purple then compress to your liking, it will saturate a bit more and might sound closer to the hardware's sweet saturation. I also noticed that your release was quite slow on the Purple which again might take away that bite.

It felt so confusing hearing the hardware just win every time. It hit the compression, saturation, and was so transparent. Amazing. CLAbluey is my jam. Although homie reduced and or gain stages the plug-ins up

The waves CLA gets rid of that dull low mid in a really nice way, it clamps the low end nicely. Plug-in Alliance sounds kind of weird, too clamped. The Slate one doesn’t have enough grab. I think I prefer the CLA. All IMO.

To me it sounds like the plug in versions has problem nailing the release time. MC77 does the best job, but it sounds to me that the hardware has a little bit faster release.

07:12 hughe difference, more transients, way more transparent nicer overdrive - the hardware unit... to me its like night and day + the waves is way more closer to the hardware than pluginalliance.

I never really use hardware. But from all famous algorithmic 76 plugin sounds choke to me when cranked. After that i just got and tried the Tim P 76 and it was a game changer with crazy amount of gain reduction it sounds no choke on vocals I wonder how will the hardware will sounds. probably that's why top mixer still use hardware instead of plugins

Dig it. And thanks for doing it without any other shit on it(eq, limiter, etc.)! Would be interested to see what the aliasing characteristic is like on those plugins, especially since blue stripes are known for their saturation, and plugins without oversampling trend to fold down their saturation so it gets all fucked and really fucks up your x of you've got a 100+ track mix and a bunch of plugins are going that! 1 plugin on 1 track don't matter. Add that up 100 times and you've got a serious fucking problem! Havnt tested recently, but back in 2011 Waves was notorious for these problems! Be interesting to see what's what nowadays! How many plugins take the lazy way out and still do this? Which of this 3 are least likely to have this happen when you've got use one on 20+ tracks? Henning a bunch of foldback on that many tracks will cause issues in anyone's mix. Don't care of your CLA himself, Scheps, Pacq', Clear, or whomever! It can be a problem and getting around it is completly unnecessary in today's game! Imo of course. That's probationary Aldi why the hardware unit settings more. As when you have more foldback on the saturation in the higher frequencies it can cancel out some of this frequencies it's folding back on! Hence why aliasing is a problem to begin with!

Why would you have hundreds of these in a session? Use it as the buss level... 2-4 stereo instances, tops...

there’s a low mid growl that that hardware has that the plugins dont. plugin alliance is close but slightly boring compared to hardware. maybe use a saturator after the purple. waves and slate sound broken in different ways
