Debt free here! Went out for a little celebration , then came home and looked over other monthly bills, to get rid of more unnecessary output. Definitely is a liberating feeling!

Start now! No reason to wait for the “ideal situation” comes along. 5 years ago, we had SO MANY people tell us we were crazy for wanting to homestead. With the way the world is going now… Many of those same people are now kicking themselves that they didn’t start themselves. Blessings! 🙏❤️🙏

For people who are new to the concept of self sufficiency it can be quite confusing at times. Thank you for somehow being the one who explains in a way that I understand easily. I've gone back and watched many videos you put out long before I found your channel just because you've taught me so much. I was raised a Chicago suburb girl who ended up in the Colorado Rocky's and it's taken me over a decade to just be able to bake right much less realize all the options nature here offers. I'd been cluelessly living amongst Juniper, Montmorency Cherry and Nanking Cherry trees for years! Now that I know what I can do with the fruits of my own yard teachers like you have been such a big help.

I have 1 1/2 acre property. We cannot have livestock but we can have a HUGE garden. I have only been canning and pantry storing for about 10 months. I did can your beef stew. Oh my goodness! It was amazing.

Excellent video and excellent philosophy. My wife and I live in the city, but we live like we are on a country homestead with growing as much of our own food as we can, preserving, eating seasonally and maintaining backups for water, heating, etc. Homesteading really is a state of mind.

I so needed this… I recently moved from Miami😳 to the middle of nowhere on 5 acres (it has been an adjustment to say the least) but have felt really lost on where to even begin, so I have just been hiding indoors from all the bugs & critters🪲🪰🐍 But I do feel like this has giving me the direction I needed, thank you & God bless you & your homestead♥️

Get up with an alarm , for me thats when the sun rises. In the winter thats a bit of a sleep in. In the summer its nice and early. An alarm clock is an unnatural way to rise.

Great tips, I won't ever be able to full on homestead because of health issues, but I'm trying to incorporate homesteading in my daily life where I can and when I have the energy. I already cook from scratch but I need to work more on cooking seasonally. I grew my first garden last year, just celery that I started from kitchen scraps and tomatoes I started from seed. But that was all I could handle. I do plan to expand my garden this year I'm going to try growing zucchini, peas, and pumpkins as well as tomatoes and celery. I also buy bulk produce and preserve it, so far I just freeze or dehydrate, I'm still a little bit terrified of pressure canning and haven't had the energy to try to figure it out, maybe this year I'll finally learn.

We moved to very rural east central Alabama about 20 years ago! Love it! We are not anywhere near being finished with establishing our home We do not go into debt, thank you! And we save! With every pay cycle, we save. We tithe to ourselves. We also gift back to our community. LOL What happened to my train of thought?!?!?! Oh, foods that are labeled "mix". I have garlic, green onions and carrot in my apartment windowsill. I don't have the mindset or commitment of a homesteader but it's a long term goal. Wish everyone the best of luck and keep trying.

My late husband was the family cook. I have been learning to cook since he pasted away. Its been a struggle as I hate cooking and have avoided it from a young age. I also have changed to a low carb diet because of health issues but my new partner doesn't eat like I do. We do grow veg and have chickens.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge, iI love how you’re able to put that much wisdom in a short and clear video! We learned time management and cooking from scratch with seasonal ingredients (bought from local farmers) while we were still living in the city. We never had credit card dept to start with, but we did have a big loan from the bank for our house in the city, houses in rural areas often are much cheaper, also reducing dept! And I sooo wish I grew more while living in the city, we had lots of indoor plants and we did have flowers and herbs and lettuce in the city (on a balcony), but now we’re on the countryside I realise I could have grown so much more!! 😆

Rural properties in Texas have gone up exponentially since the exodus from Corona and the cities. Not to mention the influx of new residents from California and New York. With Billionaires buying every ranch that goes on the market and BlackRock buying complete Subdivisions “I mean every house” thrown into the mix it become very expensive to buy any properties in the countryside of Texas!!! Actually it’s Sad!

I loved to hear you say that homesteading is a state of mind. I just retired. I sold my home in the big city, moved to a tiny mountain town into my new tiny house (399 sq ft)! I live in a tiny home community on a very tiny lot (about 30x60). But it's amazing how much I believe I will be able to grow & do homesteading style, right here. We are a ranching community, so I can buy all the grass fed/finished beef from friends, as well as pork and fresh eggs. But I will grow most of my own food. I make kombucha, kefir, sourdough bread, grow my herbs on the kitchen windowsill, and so much more. I cook mostly from scratch. And you are SO right... time management is a must! I'm so busy in retirement with all these things! I will be fermenting and canning along with you! Love your videos!!!

When you learn to cook, get used to cook more and put the rest into the freezer. So you have healthy convieniance food when you have other things to do and don't get stessed. The freezer is also your friend when everything in the garden is ready at the same time. Then you can cook or preserve when you want.

Debt free is amazing, we are working on paying our home off so we will not have that stress in our life. It’s another way we want to be self sufficient in our living arrangement. Dave Ramsey has a lot of great resources for this.

one of the points of homesteading is independence. A credit card and debt makes you dependent on your bank, and debt is like a drug. It feels nice in the short term, but then you get used to that standard of living and need more and more until your under a mountain of desperation and not independent at all. say no to debt under all circumstances.

IMO spending time being productive is so much more rewarding than time spent being excessively wasted on entertainment & idle activities. Day's become spent very quickly and there will be nothing left to show for it in the end. I'd much rather be productive and accomplish something.

These are wonderful tips! We have slowly grown our homestead over the years. Starting with a garden.. Then we bought chickens. My husband just learnt how to can last year and I can now make sourdough bread. Its amazing what you can learn on youtube!

Loving your videos! I have just started to learn how to cook. I always thought it would be really difficult and I was very surprised when I realized that it isn't and the food tastes so much better! Debt free or low debt is completely doable. We are gamers as well as homesteaders. This year we are playing more attention to preserving/storage. The garden is in bed for now as our harsh high desert weather doesn't allow for growing without a lot of protective measures. This year, I want to add more fruit & nut/shade trees.

Working on #1. Though I work several jobs and manage to prep a lot of my food on Sundays and evenings, so maybe I do ok already. #2 I have down because I'm kosher and gluten free. #3 I shop at a produce stand mostly, so food is cheap but they only carry items that are at least a little bit seasonal (greenhouses...) I live in an apartment in NYC and I tried to grow plants under a light. I'll try the thing with the light. I did grow out carrot tops back in 2020. That was all I could get. Everything else died when it broke the dirt. I think the grow lights were too weak and only good enough for ugh weed...

Cooking from scratch. My complain for people learning to cook from scratch, most recipes have ingredients that are premade mixes/food. Problem with "there's things to spend money on" is that there's ALWAYS things to spend money on. It doesn't matter what you have, there'll be someone trying to convince you that you absolutely need this other amazing tool/ convenience.

That’s exactly correct. I did this and now very much look forward to asparagus season, as well as parsnips and celery root. Love fresh beets! Now I have 4 acres and am planning my gardens.

A lot of the farm in our area don't grow organically. And the farmers markets buy from other states and areas. Very seldom are we able to get good clean local food.

The wife and I plan on homesteading in about 2 to 3 years, we are waiting for our daughters to graduate high school then we can move. We are looking at Tennessee as a possible place to go to. Does anyone here have any thoughts on that area of the country? We live in Southern AZ and I have lived in the desert for most of my life, but had about four years in the Pacific Northwest also.

They have a good video on “homesteading books” that includes some of their top picks for various homesteading reproduces including cooking. If you type “homesteading family homestead books” it will show you their video. If you click on it and read the description they have time stamps for each “genre”. Including basic cooking. 😊

I like the America's Test Kitchens cookbooks. There are tons of options available, but the ones I've gotten have a lot of pictures and basic info. If I remember right, their Vegetables Illustrated is organized by type of veggie so you can easily find recipes for what's in season. It includes how to prep each one, too, which was really helpful for me.

I need to buy seeds but I want good heirloom seeds that will produce year after year with veggies and herbs. Where do you suggest I buy them?

Your city or the next bigger one has a local college agricultural extension which you can contact about local seeds. They are tasked with helping locals succeed in growing things from the area for best success. Mine just gave me local lettuce seed to grow & let some go to seed for collecting & storing in their seed bank. They offer classes too. I'm in a Master Gardener class that is very helpful! It requires volunteer work, but for me that is half the fun.

Carolyn, can you please cover what you feed your dogs? I’m breaking the bank on what we buy but my dogs aren’t gaining a good amount of weight. My German shepherd is really underweight and totally dissatisfied with his food. He’s always looking for more

Make sure the first ingredient of the food isn’t a grain. It should be meat and vegetables. Feed your shepherd the amount of food that they should be eating at a healthy weight. Also, go to a non chain pet store they can help you find a good quality food

@@tammyhughs7836 if it doesn't set then you have great tasting syrup. If it over sets when you use it you can just warm it. You'll be fine either way have faith in yourself.

An issue we are seeing. People started "watching" homestead videos and are running out and buying their idea of what a homestead should look like. Then realizing, they don't have a clue how to do anything. They realize that and then sell off these large plots of land to developers, who are mowing everything down to build cracker box houses. Farm land is becoming extinct! If folks would be wise and learn how to manage a few buckets of corn on their porch, first. Then if that works, add a few more, and go from there- like buying a home with a big enough back yard to garden. We live from the inside out. Not YT in.. This isn't' the mouse place; somebody has to scoop the poop and collect those eggs, weed those rows and pick those veggies, in 90 degree heat! ..😂 Thanks for the common sense video's.

I disagree. I used to always work, great time mgt. With no play time, no down time, it is unhealthy. No one needs to work 10 hrs a day just to fall in bed and do it over again. That is not life. Plus, just doing all this for self only isn't the definition of helping others
