Your first time on skis should begin with learning the fundamental ski technique.
If you are a total beginner on skis I suggest you practice and learn the right ski movements on the flat to begin with. Then you are already able to control your speed when you try skiing for the first time on a slope.
I suggest you watch our video Your first time on a ski slope after you have watched this one:

Very good... Everyone should start like this... What many beginners forget is that the balanced position is important at all times... A soon as the start the snow plough they tend to lean back. Often the ankles are completely forgotten because they are in the boots... But in my humble opinion on of the most important skills in skiing, without good ankle movements, good balance especially on varying terrain will become nearly impossible
@InspirationalSkiing
@InspirationalSkiing 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Florian! I agree that a balanced position is absolutely crucial at all levels, and also that many people are not aware of the options for adjusting your balance - especially on varying terrain - that conscious ankle movements give you. That why I like exercises that creates awareness of how moving your ankles affect the skis different places in the turn, like the one I chose for our video "How to Maintain Balance on Skis". That exercise not only creates awareness of boot support options, but also awareness of ankle movements and the effect they have. I have some progressions that can help people feel and understand how they can benefit from moving their ankles in different situations. It could be a fun video to make. Please let us know if you have any suggestions for future videos, that you would like to see from us. Have a nice day! /Janus

This is good advice. I am planning on teaching my young nephew to ski and was wondering what should be first base. I am thinking that maybe I should avoid teaching him the snow plough for now and go straight for parallel turns on the premise it's hard to get beginners to stop snow ploughing once they start. There are other ways to control speed ofc.
@InspirationalSkiing
@InspirationalSkiing 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks you, jiros00. I believe it is always a good idea to start out on the flat and just get used to the equipment. The sensation of sliding (even on the flat) takes a little getting used to at first. You can then practice the basic movements here before adding the challenge of a hill. This will build confidence, which is the foundation for moving further. I prefer the Snow Plough to begin with for a number of reasons, the main one being that it gives you the ability to control your speed at slow speeds. You are right, though, that stopping can be an issue if the speed picks up too much or the steepness of the hill is too great, so choosing the right terrain is crucial. It then gives a feeling of succes, you can build on. That being said, I believe the straight to parallel can be a good option, if the right circumstances are in place. The right terrain and a skier with good balance and a the right spirit. I haven't got much experience with this approach, but I think it is interesting and you can probably - if it works for the skier - accelerate some skills this way. However, I do think that the same skier would learn parallel skiing pretty quickly anyways starting out in The Snow Plough, if taught effectively. I have done that within a few hours with some kids. Some people argue that it is an issue that you have to unlearn the Snow Plough again. To me the "unlearning" of The Snow Plough is not a major concern. The skier will hold on to it a little bit as a safety move in the transition to parallel skiing, which is fine in my opinion. It thus serves a purpose of an increased feeling of security in the phase where they are gaining confidence with a more and more parallel position. It is also a great tool in the tool box for narrow passages, like forrest trails etc. If you try the direct to parallel approach I would be curious to hear what you think. Good luck with teaching your nephew, I hope he learns it fast and that you have a good time together. /Janus

@@InspirationalSkiing Thank you Janus for your detailed response and good advice. I will report back. He seems pretty fearless in other matters so in theory he should be okay. I will try straight to parallel first on a gentle slope and see how it goes. If that doesn't fly then snowplough. I'm an experienced skier but not an experienced teacher so it's a lesson for me too!

I agree with jujuber1. I do not have that issue with those gloves, but wool is my go to material for staying warm. You might also want to try Thermopad hand warmer or something similar. I know some people who have liked them. They might not fit very well inside a close fitting glove, though.
