The steps to your first (or next) Japanese lesson will vary, but the ones in the video were:
How to take a Japanese lesson
Step 1: Put it off
Step 2: Get stressed you're putting it off
Step 3: Browse tutor matching site
Step 4: Pick whatever teacher
Step 5: Schedule lesson for today (tomorrow at the latest)
Step 6: Don't give yourself time to prepare
Step 7: Have low expectations
Step 8: Take lesson
Step 9: Feel proud of self
Step 10: Get excited to take more lessons
Step 11: Find a teacher you like (maybe)
Step 12: Find a consistent lesson time slot
Step 13: Run experiments until you like result of previous steps
Step 14: Think about cool stuff you've learned
Step 15: Try to find stuff you've learned in native materials
Step 16: Prepare for technical difficulties
Step 17: Don't be discouraged when things don't go as planned
Step 18: Try to use/explain what you learned
Step 19: Don't be too hard on yourself
Step 20: Work more on output vs input
Step 21: Pick the level at which you will take lessons (your decision!)
Step 22: Enjoy yourself
Step 23: Build up comprehension outside of lessons

「継続は力なり」という言葉もある通り、私たちは今までの人生で何を継続してきたのかが最終的に大きな差になることが多い。
Like the saying goes, "persistence pays". In life, what often makes the biggest difference in the end is whether or not you stuck with something.
Our target phrase was 継続は力なり (keizoku wa chikara nari) (persistence pays off) (lit. continuation + は + power + becoming).

i just starting learn japanes ,iam 45 years old ,retire person , this is good idea to learn but iam generaly focus in my hiragana and katakana, i have plan to understand it by 2 month reading ,write practicing !:)) ,then learn basic gramar arigato gozaimasu!

My favorite Japanese saying is along the same lines: 石の上にも三年。It's keeping me going through the eternal intermediate no-man's land.

I hadn't known this saying. Thanks for sharing it ^_^ I know the feeling of being in "eternal intermediate no-man's land". You think you're intermediate, then you get better and think, "No, I was still a beginner before. Now I'm intermediate." And that just continues and continues lol. what a calm, informative video! been listening to (technically reading) the featured format of content recently: voiced manga slideshows on youtube, and often the words just wash over me. This kind of breakdown is fascinating.

i hope you make some more of this,, i struggle to understand long sentence and this is the best way to break down each word to make it understandable for a beginner like me,,,, onegaishimasu!

This is one of my favorite idioms related to japanese learning and life! I like it along with 学ぶより慣れろ。It could be translated as Instead of learning, focus on getting used to it. I feel it reflects your language learning philosophy too.. In that, it's ok if you don't perfectly remember every single piece of grammar/vocabulary you just crammed into your brain.. Instead what's important is to be kind to yourself and think hey.. I studied this new thing.. I may not remember perfectly, but if it's useful I will keep seeing it and every time I will get more used to it... that paired with thinking that even if you just managed to study a little bit Today, it may not feel like a lot, but in time even water drops can wear away stone ! (Which is my favorite translation of the idiom you presented today haha) Thanks for Today's video! Love the cameo :D

Nice idiom! I hadn't encountered this one before. It really does match my philosophy to learning something as large/in-depth as Japanese. I tried to see if Japanese has an idiom like "in time even water drops can wear away a stone", and I found an article mentioning the phrase 「雨垂れ石を穿つ」(あまだれいしをうがつ) (raindrops drill through a stone(?)). So then I went and asked Rei (my wife) if she has ever heard this phrase, and she said... no. T_T Thanks for commenting!

「学ぶより慣れろ」も文法的にも間違っていないし意味も通じますが、日本人が使っているidiomは「習うより慣れろ」です。意味としてはほとんど同じですが韻を踏んでいるのがポイントです。「習うより慣れよ」と言うこともあります。というか、こちらのほうが多い気がします。念のためですが、この場合の最後の「慣れよ」の「よ」は「断定」の終助詞ではなく、「命令」の「よ」です。即ち「慣れろ」の「ろ」と同じ役割です。

Yeah, it happens a lot. I also often have to pause recording when they're yelling in the background too loud haha. Sometimes I think I should go back to recording at 5am when they're still sleeping, like I used to. Thanks for the comment ^_^
