Hello, just discovered your channel, and I must say it is a treasure trove for recording and content creation. I'm not highly knowledgeable in the audiophile world, but I'd like to experience music as the creator intended, to listen to all the little things that often go unnoticed on my neckband. I'm on a tight budget, and I've been looking for something for a bit now. Is there anything in particular you'd recommend? Even some wireless options? Thanks a bunch.

Glad you're enjoying my videos. In a reasonable price range, the open-back Sennheiser HD599SE (wait for them to go on sale around $150) and the closed-back Audio-Technica M40x both provide a natural reproduction of source material. You can step up in price to Senn. HD600/650 or AKG K-702, but the returns are diminishing for general music listening. Hope this helps out!

1990s for movie watching...I like it! I also prefer open back when isolation isn't an issue. I have a lot of hours on my HD600 and my go to neutral headphones are the semi open back DT880 pro, but I must say the M40x are far too good for a closed back in their price range...I never have them too far away...

Hi, I 'm glad you enjoyed my review! For monitoring vocals or voiceover in particular, in the sub $100 usd price range I like the Sony MDR 7506, Sennheiser HD280 Pro, and Audio-Technical M20x or M40x. These all have good representation of the midrange frequencies and will help ensure your recordings translate well to other playback devices. I have reviewed all of these options (MDR 7506 coming soon). Hope this helps out!

Hello. I came across your video and I found it helpful and straightforward. However, I have a bit of a doubt. For the past year I've been using a very cheap pair of headphones for my music production, mainly the mixing aspect, but I think it is time for an upgrade. I am still new to this whole music production thing, so would the M20x be good for me, a beginner, or should I look into other options?
@askdrtk
@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
Hello! The M20x are a great affordable set of headphones to get started in music production. They work well for tracking and can be used to get starting with mixing. Moving the budget up a bit, I highly recommend the M40x as they provide a more natural sound and improved comfort for longer listening sessions. For music production, you need to learn the sound of your headphones so your mixes will translate well across a variety of playback devices. You can certainly accomplish this with the M20x to get started, but the more natural tone of the M40x may make things a bit easier.

How will it perform against AKG K 92? I am planning to get AKG K 240(not mark 2) for $69, or K92 for $40 or M20x for $52.. I really want to take the K240 after watching your video but it is a bit out of my budget. It will be very helpful if you share some actual test results or at least give your opinion. My first priority is balanced sound quality. Closest to true sound like the k240
@askdrtk
@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
Of the three, the K240 Studio has the most natural sound (after a good amount of burn-in time). The mids on the K92 are underemphasized compared to the other two making them sound scooped. I haven’t done frequency analysis on the K92 yet, but the mid scoop is very apparent to my ears. The M20x are impressive at delivering a reasonably balanced sound given their price and many believe Audio-Technica made them a bit too good. Both the M20x and K240 are good choices with the M20x having a slight edge in bass response vs the K240 having a slightly more balanced tone. Based on my tests, the K240 are the most balanced on the three, but the M20x are a great overall value. I hope this helps out!

Would you recommend this M20x over the M30x for my team of video editors? It's worth it the increase of price of the M30x over the M20x? My team only edits video for KZfaq/TikTok, nothing too high end but they are using crap headphones and I want to standarize the production...but I can't overpaid if the M20x are almost the same (my bosses would kill me if I spent too much). Thank you very much
@askdrtk
@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
Standardizing headphones across your team is a great way to improve the consistency across your content. For video editing the 20s will get the job done and in many ways are a better choice vs the 30s. The 30s tend to be over boosted in the sibilant frequencies which can lead editors to over adjust resulting in dull sounding audio that lacks clarity. The 20s will likely result in audio that translates better across a wide audience. I would say go with the M20x. Save money and get better results… Hope this helps out!

@askdrtk
@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
I have had a set in for review for a while (posting soon). The HD681 have deeper bass response vs the M20x. I'll have move detail in the review, but in general bass and mids are quite good while there are a few odd things (frequency spikes) going on the the higher frequencies. The highs are boosted which can make the midrange seem a bit submerged, but I wouldn't say excessive. I will say that for those wanting an open (actually semi-open) back headphone with good bass response at an affordable price, the HD681 are worth considering. Build quality seems lower vs the M20x, but only time will tell on durability. Hope this helps out.

Which headphones would you recommend to use with the scarlet solo 3rd gen?
@askdrtk
@askdrtk 10 ай бұрын
The headphone amplifier in the Solo is capable of driving a number of closed and open-back headphones. If you are recording with a microphone and need to keep the headphone audio isolated, a closed-back design is the way to go. Open-back headphones can offer benefits of improved comfort, stereo image, and soundstage if you are ok with the sound escaping into your space. Some good affordable options for closed back include: M20x, OneOdio Monitor 60, Sony MDR 7506, and Sennheiser HD280 pro. Affordable open-back include: AKG K240 Studio, OneOdio Monitor 80, Philips SHP9500, and Superlux HD681. Hope this helps out!

How do you record through a headphone using a mic into a AI?? I'm sorry, I'm a noob and don't understand the concept!
@askdrtk
@askdrtk Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question! I will be doing a full video explaining binaural microphones at some point, but I will try to give you an idea. To record headphones it is necessary to simulate the environment they are used in. This means a simulated human head with simulated ears. It also means using 2 microphones with as flat as possible frequency response of 20-20000Hz (standard audible range for most people) with one placed appropriately in each ear canal. To accomplish this I built a simulated head with two medical grade "ears" (including ear canals - these are used by medical students for study purposes but work well for this application). I then placed a Sennheiser MK2 microphone capsule in each ear canal. The head itself is coated on the interior with a compound to stop resonance and the head is filled with a mixture of sand and a few other materials to ensure it is of a weight / density are similar to an average person's head. I then conducted numerous tests to ensure I could obtain repeatable results and also validated my build by comparing it to a Neuman KU100 (a pre built version of what I am using that costs $11700) to ensure my measurements were a reasonable representation of the industry standards. While there is no way for you to actually try the headphones on over a video, my goal is for you to hear the difference between the original recordings and those made through the headphones so that you can get an idea of how a particular set of headphones may color the sound (boomy bass, scooped mids, brittle highs, etc). I know this is a bit lengthy, but I hope it helps out!
