I'm getting mixed signals from pilots at my airport about high performance. Some tell me it's no different than getting a complex rating, others tell me that I have to worry about so much more, like shock cooling, descending by pitch only, calculating takeoff power based off of the barometric pressure so I don't destroy the flux gate for the turbocharger. It's become a bit stressful. It's been difficult to find resources to study that can help me understand what I need to do.

@Domenic LaFauci I used a piper Saratoga. In all honesty, it was the easiest add-on ever. If you can fly a complex airplane you can fly a high performance. Don't treat it like an acrobatic airplane, don't think it can carry everything without calculating w&b, be aware of your oxygen requirements, and reduce throttle more gradually when descending. (2 inches every 2 minutes is a good rule of thumb with piston aircraft, turbine aircraft don't have this restriction.) Overall, you just need to be a bit more ahead of the airplane. I got caught high approaching airports after getting the rating. However, I fixed it by beginning to reduce throttle in cruise before my descent and that fixed my speed problem.

Years ago I flew 182. We never at that time had the designation high performance. Where did this come from and why?

I got my multi in a DA42 without a HP endorsement. Going to get it to fly a 182 soon, should be fun for sure

Wow that was a long time ago. No Big. At very end you say "okay bring the trottle and prop back' That is where my question is. What do you bring it back to. ie 24 square? or ... Glad to have the info any time I get it. All the bet neal sw fla

Sorry for my late response, getting back in the flow of things. I used to use the published range in the POH, which at our weight, would usually be 70 knots.

We always check the temps before adjusting. Since it was mostly a pattern flight in cooler weather (from what I recall) there was little need for adjustment. In the Seminole/Seneca, I always found that to be the opposite case. Those twins needed constant adjustments done to the Cowl flaps.
