Every new ham should start off calling into nets. You learn how hams communicate and you meet other hams on the air. If someone is new, the folks on the net are going to be glad to hear you and will help you along.

Every new ham should first learn how to communicate on CB channel 6, aka The Superbowl. Once you can handle that, you can handle anything ... you'll either get some thick skin or give up ... and trust me when I tell you that The Superbowl has *NOTHING* on an 80 or 160 meter net when it comes to the abuse you'll face. Just stating facts.

I agree! One thing us not so new hams can do to help the newer hams is update our QRZ page to include the nets and repeaters in our area. I remember as a new ham wanting to join nets but having a hard time finding them. Club websites usually advertise their nets. When I first started out I was on the radio asking about nets and someone responded with just look me up on QRZ I have a bunch listed there. That was helpful to me as a new ham

I do a net on our local repeater daily at 9am CDT. I started the net during COVID to check on our elderly operators. We are on IRLP reflector 9732 and get a few out of Fargo, ND. I am in Aberdeen, SD. Also do a Thursday evening net at 7pm.

It's really sad so many repeaters are so underused - Here in the UK my local 2m repeater is on my doorstep, just a hop, skip and a jump away and I can monitor with a HT and put loads of call outs and you might be lucky to get someone to come back to you... Allstar / Gateway linked is only way for these type of repeaters I think... but I have heard in the past some people moaning they don't understand them or how they work - "Ignorance Is Bliss"...

I have a love/hate relationship with nets. I do love an active net, but dislike them when people choose not to check-in.. And then people that don’t check in blame new amateurs for not checking in. (MORE to it than that, but that’s the gist of it.) 73!

I check in sometimes and others I don't... sometimes I find it "routine" and why bother. I guess that's the way of life though.

Jeff, you did great with your Fusion net that you ran. I just think that there's "some people" in this area who think that a net should only be on plain, boring old analog, so that they can sit and listen in also. The only thing that was stopping me from checking in every week was, I was at work Mon-Fri nights. I hope you try it again in the future. 73. KC3UEE

@@kidbach Thanks. Amazing how many of the existing Yaesu owners decided to stop checking in after the first couple weeks. Work schedules & family priorities are understandable. Laziness or complete disregard isn’t. Yet let’s blame the cost of Yaesu radios for new hams for not checking in. Excuses from the lazy. Pffffft!

If the net operators own the repeater, I guess they can call CQ until the cows come home. Lots of people forget they are a charity to the community.

Nets are definitely integral to ham radio. I think they give a sense for the club that’s running it (if it’s run by a club). What bugs me are nets comprised of folks checking in to the net as “in and out.” But hey, that’s me. The club I’m a member of in PA (even though I moved to CT) has a weekly Roundtable discussion net that is still doing quite well. Good video! 73 de K2CJB

I say that "in and out" is a sign that people want to participate, but don't have a reason... A challenge for net control to come up with something... Perhaps a weekly question to get them talking.

we have a few local nets hear in NY. some on same repeater frequency on 70 CM. 444 is common one . we had a 6 meter repeater that I could get into but no longer up. the outher 6 meter one too far from me. one 900 MHz one ,222 MHz one. and a nice 10 meter one. the 1296 MHz one just to far away. I have a Sky warn net buy me. gets very active during bad weather. one local HAM works for NOAA . I am in Boston NY. some local nets can be quite fun. some nets are open to any one check ins. 73's

Believe me you don't. The actual rules are very simple. Identify yourself properly by your call sign and only transmit with the power you are allowed on the frequencies you are allowed. The rest is just gentlemanly agreements. Where to use which mode or whether to call CQ and all that you learn that as you go. Again those are just friendly agreements anyway. While a quite a few hams are technical there are plenty that are not, at all.

What part of ham radio excites you? (operating, building, repairing, etc?)
@KlingonCaptain
@KlingonCaptain Ай бұрын
@temporarilyoffline I like making old things work again and building things, so those would be at the top. But I also like the idea of meeting new people that I've never seen and being useful in times of need. So I guess it's the romanticism of HAM radio that has always excited me. Maybe even the mythology of HAM radio. 📻

There has to be a connection made to a useful purpose (even if it's just fun) for the new generation to get involved. It's happening, but it's slow.
