Your Many Deaths at the Crossing

Network Rail hadn't done any level crossings campaigns for a while - the last major one I remember is "See Track, Think Train" about five years ago. But no more! There's been an increase in pedestrian deaths at level crossings apparently, so here's a series of short PIFs designed to remind you NOT to fix your bike, check your phone, rescue your dog or anything else in the middle of a level crossing!

Stop, Look, Listen and Live A moving train does not forgive Think twice before crossing that gate A second later and it's too late Once you ride onto that track It's a one way trip from which you won't come back When tons of steel meet human flesh Steel will win, no need to guess It's against the law and common sense Don't ever cross a gate or fence Wait right there it won't be that long Take a chance and you'll be forever gone It's a game that you cannot win Few have lived to ever try it again So listen up and play by the rules Taking risks is a game for fools Look both ways and stay alive There may be others in the car you drive When you hear a train that's passing through Remember they've got a right to live, too So Stop, Look, Listen and Live A moving train does not forgive Take it slow, don't be in a rush Or your dreams and more that train will crush © 2017 - 2019

The dog and guy in the first one 😭 they looked so happy. If he didn’t go to the dog, I think the dog could’ve escaped in time. Maybe.

It happens here in America to. Though not as much on my neck of the woods but last year a young kid was hit. We had a friend who is a paramedic and all he said was it was a ghastly sight. We can use these in America to.

Everyday people are killed by a horn at horned level crossings. Remember guys, always listen out or you may get killed by a horn going "brrrrrrr!!!!!" Just like this video.

Surely you can hear the train coming when you’re on the rails. They must be hard of hearing.

I have such a hard time believing that people could be taken by surprise by something as big and noisy as a train.

It's not as easy to pick up on as you might think. It's surprisingly hard to judge how far away a train is purely by sound (if you're on a part of the track where the train is hidden) and, even if you can see it, people often underestimate how fast trains are, which is where most of the accidents happen (people not giving 100% of their attention/thinking they can make it across in time). I forget where I saw it, but I remember an experiment where people had to guess when they heard a train (and from which direction) before it was too late, and most were lucky if they got it correct ONCE. It doesn't make it any less silly, but it's easy to see why people are often caught off-guard. I agree that the people in these PIFs are always complete boneheads though; purely because every PIF has the victim wander onto a clearly marked part of the track and hang around having a chat, before going "oh shit, I didn't realise there'd be TRAINS on this train track!"

You underestimate trains They can be big, but with all the noise of the human vocal cords and the quiet of diesel and electric fuel, and then the incredible speed. And then H E A D P H O N E

@@cherylstevens6898 you don’t have to be deaf to not hear something Headphones help in not hearing the train People underestimate speed and distance, don’t pay attention, don’t hear it until it’s too late These PSAs are quite silly with people on the clearly marked track I don’t know, having a chat and, then oh crap train so unexpected oOoOo
