Adapted from the Director Patrick Liu's high school memories,Your Name Engraved Herein is about two high school boys in an all-male boarding school exploring their friendship and genuine love for each other against the backdrop of the 1980s when Taiwan recently lifted its strict martial law, amid a transition from conservative society to become the most LGBTQ-friendly country in Asia. When the boarding school begins admitting females, their relationship faces an ultimate test with the emergence of a school girl.
Your Name Engraved Herein is Taiwan’s all-time highest-grossing LGBTQ film, receiving 5 Golden Horse Award nominations in 2020. The film is produced by Arthur Chu, directed by Patrick Liu, starring Jing-Hua Tseng and Edward Chen.
Your Name Engraved Herein will stream exclusively on Netflix worldwide on December 23.

After I finished watching the movie, my heart hurt. Not because of my own bad experience, and not only because of the film. I hurt so much for all the people out there who didn't get a happy ending. This story could be the story of millions in human history, of millions who had to love secretly, whose feelings were frowned upon. I hurt for all the broken hearts, all the people who never saw their loved one again. Love is such a pure, natural thing. Why does it have to be so difficult? Why is the world such an unfair place? We should spread love, and unite around our love 💕

The movie broke my heart, mostly for my family members who could not be themselves for so many, many years and for my child, who is so fucking brave and just keeps putting their heart out there over and over again. This is a classic neurotic response. If you love someone without nothing in return your are clearly a sick person in love off an idea, an abstraction, an illusion. Clearly a case for therapy. You can love and love and love again forever and the many times you need if you are alive. We need as society to destroy this destructive thinking of one and only romantic love like Romeo and Juliet. This are works of fiction to fantasize for the joy of art but not good examples for living. The real joy of living. This is the real human tragedy of stupidity magnify by the media. Better see the movie "Soul" by Disney who talk about obsessions in life. Nothing good come from obsessive thinking including obsessive love. Thanks.

"Why is that okay for you to like a girl and it's not okay for me liking a boy? what's the difference?? what's make my like and your like different???" This iconic line, and then the phone scene... no, all the scene from this movie is iconic, beautiful, and a masterpiece. At the start, i thought i would be on jia han side, but towards the end of the story, i slowly understand birdy more. I hope there will be more amazing movies like this with a beautiful scenery, script, and even beautiful soundtrack, not just a usual bl where two handsome dude sucking e/o face with bland storyline 🙄

I’m still Jia Han’s side. Birdy should’ve at least told Jia Han his true feelings before and break his heart if he did not want them to be together. Love should always be clear. There will always be that boundary between friendship and romantic love that should never be crossed. If Birdy wanted Jia Han to move on he should have not let some of the events happen between them because those only made Jia Han confused and torn. I agree that those lines are really remarkable and iconic though!
@ehoan0
@ehoan0 3 жыл бұрын
@@thevinzicode3435 Both Jia Han and Birdy do not need to tell “I love you” to each other. They already know their love is mutual. If Jia Han did not recognise that Birdy also love him, Jia Han would not approach Birdy (the shower scene) after Birdy tried to distance him from Jia Han. You need to know that expressing love during that period is extremely difficult, even for a straight students couple (Birdy can only write “Wanan”, but not “I love you” on the balloon given to Ban Ban). Even straight students couples cannot express their love, then homosexuals expressing love is UNTHINKABLE. I recommend you reading this post to understand the story more: www.reddit.com/r/boyslove/comments/kjk1ga/seven_secrets_you_need_to_know_about_your_name/?

Because Birdy's love for Jia-Han is "protection". After passing through the campus corridor and being chased, Birdy realized that if he continued to approach Jia-Han, Jia-Han would also be regarded as a target of bullying. He believes that as long as Jia-Han can continue to be a "normal person" recognized by everyone in that era, Jia-Han will not lose what he should have. (Schoolwork, friendship and family affection) Birdy: "If what you give to me is the same as what you give to others, then I don’t want it." Watching this movie again, you will find that Birdy's love is not less than Jia-Han.

lol when you think birdy was coward but the truth is he was the strong one, y'all never realize how he never denied his sexuality to the entire school before jia-han enter his life right? everyone was assuming that he's gay but he never denied nor confirmed it, not until he saw how it could damage jia-han. he faced a lot of things, discrimination and bullying because of his sexuality. he was never afraid for himself, he was afraid for jia-han because he experienced those things. jia-han still had a family who believed in him while he had nothing to lose. he was a risk taker but he wouldn't just gamble jia-han's future knowing how hard it was in the past if you were out in public. before calling birdy "coward" watch the movie again and try to understand birdy's side. he was far from coward, he was brave enough to let go of the only love he has ever known his entire life, the love that not even his family made him feel. birdy's love for jia-han was as deep as jia-han's love for birdy.

I came here today to tell you how I feel after watching this movie. A rush of bliss and then sadness. I can't help but to wonder if my fate will be like theirs? I'm so afraid of growing old and being alone that it urges me to just go out there and love as long as I can and as much as I can. Truly a masterpiece of 2020. The ending is heart wrenching after realizing that the last few minutes of the movie is just a "what if?" of the two protagonist. I hope everyone who is hurting and searching right now, that you may find that person you will spend the rest of your days. No one, deserves to grow old and lonely. I tell you, NO ONE.

Absolutely beautiful. I went into this expecting to see just another teen drama and instead I found myself swept up in an amazingly well crafted story, with terrific performances by the main leads, and an enormous attention to detail. It captures not only the love and pain of the protagonists but also the ambient in which they move. This movie absolutely deserves an Oscar nod. And the music! Oh my god the music...

I watched Your Name Engraved Herein today, it was beautiful, melancholic, aesthetic and heartbreaking. I can feel their pain, love, agony, fear, longingness, and regret. All at once, how is that possible to feel all those emotions at a certain moment. I felt bad for the characters, they could be happy together but they need to consider a lot of things. What saddens me more is that in reality there are so many Birdy and Jia Han out there who didn't have a happy ending just because society forbids that kind of love. And I can't understand that. I refuse to understand. Protecting each other by not being together is a different kind of pain. A happiness that could have been experienced but didn't because religion and law forbid.

I didn't expect much. I don't know, I just lowered my standards after watching to much bls I guess. So I really didn't expect much. And then I just sat there watching this movie and I wasn't this freaking emotionally invested in anything other then this movie in several months or even years. I'm not joking, this thing is a masterpiece. It feels so real, and so... I cannot even describe it. The story, the cinematography, the actors, like everything hit me directly in the heart. I love how even though the storyline is sooo real and logical it's still so unpredictable. The actors are without any doubt some of the best in this genre. And the music is also so amazing. Everyone who hasn't watched it yet, I strongly strongly recommend giving it a try. I don't say that often, believe me. But it's so freaking worth it.

Well, that's because this is not bl. As sad as it is, bl is mostly made by and for the pleasure of women. It's a very problematic subject that I won't get into, but basically, this movie feels different because it is different. Not only is this movie an anecdote from the director, but also just a movie about what being gay at that time might have looked for some people. It is fictional of course, but the story did happen in real life, and so the emotions that the actors were told to portray are more real. In contrast, most bl's are written by women and from the get-go, the stories from which they start (usually novels) are fictional and then get another adaptation in the form of a series or movie, but they don't care to touch on subjects like society's discrimination, the inner turmoil of figuring yourself out and then showing up and living without hiding, etc. (amongst other hardships that real lgbtq+ people experience) because the intention of bl is to entertain rather than tell a real story. And don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching bl, but more often than not some bls/gls aren't relatable to me as a member of the lgbt+ community. Because they lack the struggle and hardships that come with being gay, bi, lesbian, trans, etc.

Your Name Engraved Herein was indeed beautifully made. Imagine how hard for queers in those times where LGBTQ+ was not yet accepted in society. To compare now, Taiwan embraced the said minority and named as the runaway pink trailblazer of Asia- the most LGBT-friendly country in Asia. This film is absolutely an eye-opener for everyone that everything is worth fighting for. To all the queers out there who are still struggling to come out of the closet, just take your time. There will always be time for everything. Always know that you are as PRECIOUS, you are LOVED, you are WELCOME in this world. In no time, everything will be okay. Believe, trust, and continue to live.

I had watched Call Me By Your Name with great difficulty. Another KZfaqr recommended this film to watch. Terrible idea. Why? This film mirrored my life from 1969-72 while I was in college. From the moment I met Jim, we were never the same. Jim was 6'3" tall, lean and muscular with sandy blond hair. He was beautiful inside and out. People loved him. Not a lazy bone in his body. Emotionally strong and stable. I never saw him get angry or say a bad word. I was the shorter at 5'10" with dark brown hair and a slighter build. Jim was into sports. I was into music but I loved his sports and he loved my music. Our whole beings were connected. We would see each other from a distance on campus and be drawn together, sitting under the trees on the grass talking as if we had all the time in the world, conversations we didn't want to end. We quickly became good friends. I was 20 and Jim was 21. Then something began to happen that the two of us had never experienced before. Love, life, passion...we took it to a new level. We ran around our college town having the time of our lives. We studied together, we played, sang and laughed a lot. We became obsessed with each other. Unlike Jai-han and Birdy, we never fought or argued. Initially, I did not know Jim was gay. It was not until he took me home with him one weekend to visit his family that I realized the love we had for each other. We slept in his room and that night I will never forget. Jim initiated everything and I was a more than willing follower. We took every opportunity to be alone and enjoy ourselves with a ski trip to the Colorado Rockies, a train trip to Kansas City or just visit our families. What we had was very special. It was our secret. Our friends did not know of our passion and love for each other. We never talked about BEING gay, we just lived it. This continued for 3 years until graduation. We saw the end coming. We knew a gay relationship was not sustainable in conservative midwest rural America. The times were stacked against us. Separating was agony and pain, just like Jai-han and Birdy. I cried myself to sleep every night or didn't sleep at all. I had no family, no friends or clergy to confide in. We had no internet, no social media and so I suffered in silence with tormenting dreams about Jim that lasted for years. My dreams were a continuation of our love. I would wake up all confused, thinking Jim was back only to realize he was NEVER coming back. Jim eventually married and I as well. This was 49 years ago. The last time I saw him was 27 years ago. Jim and I send a Christmas card and note to each other every year. We both have children and grandchildren now. Surprisingly, after a phone call from Jim, we started texting in 2019. We plan to meet in September 2021. The love that was kindled and ignited in 1969 has never died over all these years. There is a love that is for life.....this movie captured the essence of true love.

I am well beyond 50 in age. It has been a long, long road that has never ended. The love between Jim and I was the greatest love I have ever experienced on this earth. It was an enduring love but not enduring enough to overcome the prejudice, the scoffing, the ridicule and rejection that we knew would come from family, friends, neighbors or any joe on the streets. One person replied, "Grow up. Get over it." I don't think that person has any idea about what real live is and probably never will. This is such a beautiful and yet a sad story. Knowing this is based on a true event breaks my heart. I am from the same generation in the movie in Taiwan. This movie has stirred all my buried feelings and finally can’t stop my tears. I still can clearly remember the year we met. How you told me that you loved me and called me just to tell me you missed me and just wanted to hear my voice. I was leaning on you sleeping on a bus with a jacket covered our holding hands. At that time, it was the most beautiful thing in the world to me. Finally, a bisexual like you, told me that you wanted to move on with a normal life. All I could say was…. OK. So many times, I wanted to ask… are you brave enough to love me? It is 2020. So many people have fought for us so we are where we are now, but there are still so many places that still see us differently, and so many of us are still scared. I hope, someday, we don’t have to fight anymore and we all can tell the world that we love him.

I just finished watching it and i cannot believe i stayed to the very end like i really watched the end credits because i was crying already. This movie is the best BL ive seen this year. It frickin tore me apart, though i wanted more at the end at their older state. But i was so glad they met again. The actors who played the highschool parts were incredible. And the conversation between him and the priest was one of the highlights for me. I dont want to spoil anything about the story so if you’re seeing my comment, go watch it right now. It’s deserves way much more support and love.

Beautifully haunting. It is one of those films that will consume you more and more intensely after you've watched it. The many seemingly playful words said by the two boys that delineate the heartbreaking realities of being a non-heterosexual in a deeply conservative society. The moments when the two grown boys finally fail to keep their raw emotions at bay and decide that they will simply let them burst. The points at which they come to realise that they have been too tired of concealing their vulnerability and their true selves. They will remain in my mind definitely for some time. I am so glad that there is a film like this and I have come across it and watched it. Highly recommended to anyone who likes watching films about love and first love.

Your Name Engraved Herein is achingly beautiful. Everything from the script, the acting to the cinematography was perfect. Makes my heart ache that so many people still have to be shamed, judged and even persecuted because of who they love. Love is love is love - everyone deserves to love and be loved. Taiwan is the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage while same-sex relationships are still criminalized in Singapore and Malaysia... we still have a long way to go. To any LGBTQ+ folks struggling out there, I'm rooting for you and stay strong. Although the ending is slightly disappointing, I like that it's an open ending that leans on the hopeful side. All in all, a spectacular movie that deserves all the love. Asian cinema just hits differently, the depth, subtlety and nuances of this film remind me a bit of Wong Kar Wai's Happy Together. This line is my favourite: "It's fine for you to like a girl, why isn't it fine for me to like a boy? Is your love any greater than mine, my love any lesser?"

I don’t understand why Taiwanese movies aren’t as popular as other Asian movies.. Chinese and Thai BL drama actors and series get a lot of popularity I believe (I am not sure though) .. I realised the views on their videos , their Instagram followers are very high .. this is my second Taiwanese movie and I am grateful to Netflix for making us available these masterpieces

The ending was bittersweet, their young years they can never get back but they can cherish what they could have now. This movie was a masterpiece and it really hit home for me cause it’s so relatable. I kinda wish I found my own Jia Han or Banban haha.. honestly? I felt heartache knowing Birdy and Jia Han had been apart after that final scene, and it hurt. But the hurt was alleviated by that last scene of them two, being together. Together and happy. It made me happy, even through the hurt, I found their love engraved in the story, and that was all that really mattered.

I live in Vietnam, a country which is openning , my soul is like two characters in the movie, scared and shy. When I watched the movie a few days ago, I saw me in it, it is very similar to my life right now but unfortunately the person I look for hasn't appeared yet. Your acting as well as its content are so great, I'm glad that the two characters were finally able to find each other again but still leave deep regrets about their youth. Thank you all, I wish I could meet you guys in real life when I'm a real person

Honestly I've waited so long for this. I didn't think that when it got released on Taiwan a day or week after it will be the international release, I looked for sites where I can stream it online but there's no luck. Good thing that it's now on Netflix.

I don't get how the brave and fearless Birdy with all his courage while in school, gets to be this lonely and fearful person we see while him and Jia-han are having that telephone call. He just doesn't seem like the same happy person but looks depressed and sad and which he seems to be even 30 years later.

Hey...2020 is officially over...after having watched a number of BL series/movies, I solemnly declare these are the Top3 for the year (in no specific order): 1. Thailand - I Told Sunset about You 2. Japan - 30 Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard 3. Taiwan - Your Name Engraved Herein They are all very special...great in many aspects. They are rich in local contents, values, flavour etc...with universal appeal. Not to mention the acting, directorship, script, prop/cinematography etc². Thanks to all the production teams for making these wonderful pieces of work...and for making my 2020 wonderful 😊

After Watching This Movie, I am left with this melancholic feeling, not very stuffy but you can feel it. The movie and actors really did a great job portraying the feelings, the society as well as two main characters perspectives. This is a beautiful masterpiece.

"Don't all homosexuals deserve to go to hell? May be more people would understand me in hell. Make it easy for me and help me go to hell" Those sentences hit me so hard. I was and I'm still speechless... Because it's true. Love is supposed to be something good and beautiful. And religion, church and so on, those things which should be based on LOVE are today what cause HATRED, DEPRESSION, AND SADNESS... Poor world...poor us ... Poor life. I know that there is a God. But i also know that God can't condamn 2 people of the same love eachother since he said LOVE EACHOTHER himself. That movie is MORE THAN A MASTERPIECE. There are no words to define it.

What's the purpose of the story of Sodom and Gomorrah? Why is adultery and fornication not allowed even if it is the opposite gender? You see we can only love someone based on what God has allowed us.
