The shrine takes what's most precious from you. That was each other's names for Mitsuha and Taki. So even if he wrote his name it would've disappeared. But declarations of love are protected by the Moon according to folklore, so by writing "I love you." (Which Mitsuha was going to write as well, because of how she starts the kanji stroke order) it was saved and that was their most important thing. They wanted each other to know that they were loved.

I always thought it had to do with him returning her braided cord, which was their red thread of fate. However your explanation seems to make more sense.

It all makes sense more or less but I don't think you're right. Mitsuha starts with a horizontal stroke which yeah is in す but it's also how you write 三 so like... You could be right and you could be wrong. Doesn't really matter tho in the end.

@@Ozai75 they literally refer to each other as Taki and Mitsuha throughout the whole movie. I know what the formal format of naming people in Japan is, but this is a completely different situation. They're friends and they love each other. She's not Miyamizu-san, she's Mitsuha.

A small detail that was implied is that because the villagers were successfully evacuated, Mitsuha's father must've been involved which means the two of them patched up. Taki didn't just give her a stern and independent image at school, but also gave her the courage to fix one of her life's biggest problems.

Oh i just love this movie so much. They really put extra attention to little tiny detail. Look at mitsuha scannung head to toe taki's body cuz for her, she just met taki yesterday and now taki is more taller. Mitsuha's confused face when taki said he alrd kept the tibbon for three years. Cuz for mitsuha it's exactly just yeterday when she gave the string. The red thread, is like symbolism of mitsuha life, she entrusted her life to taki. And when the ribbon back to her again, taki's role as mitsuha's life safer has ended. All the memories must be erased, yet the feeling of love still remain. Taki is so smart to write i love you cuz that messege has nothing to do with the mission to safe the village. It's just between them two

Oh one more, look at taki. He never cry except when he feels he lost mitsuha. When they meet on kataware doki time, taki be like "oh here you are" and mitsuha is a crying mess. Cuz it's all taki's work to bring their two bodies in that place. Mitsuha knew nothing. Thanks sarah and adam for reacting my number 1 favorite anime movie of all time

Sarah, your comment at 1:15 "I'll cry when I'm happy" actually foreshadows the song at staircase scene at the end. The English translation of those lyrics is: Crying even when you're happy Smiling even when you're feeling lonely It's because a part of you Has made it here before the rest has (Nandemonaiya - Radwimps)

Add me to the people asking for A Silent Voice next! And no worries Sarah, you weren't the only one crying, it happens even on rewatch, such a great movie! 😭😭 And thank you both for your reaction! In case it wasn't mentioned already, and if you would like to listen more of the music in the movie, there is a live orchestral performance by RADWIMPS, the band that scored the whole movie, available here on KZfaq. To answer Adam's question, there are "troupes" in anime that you can recognize in time, like certain character archetypes and stuff, but like in non-anime tv shows and movies, you can find a bit of everything: from commercial stuff aimed at younger audiences, to very adult stories and everything in between, including gems along the way like Your Name, Spirited Away and A Silent Voice (among much others). With that being said, and maybe outside the more commercial based stuff, I think anime takes more creative freedom here and there, both in the stories being told, and the way it approachs them. A cult classic show if you guys ever want to dig in an adult anime show is Monster, be it as reaction on the channel or to watch on your own (it's kinda long but it passes by so fast). Thank you both again for your reactions, and can't wait to see more! Much love from Chile ❤❤

I am Japanese I'm sorry if it's hard to convey because I'm using the translation function. Thank you for the wonderful reaction. When Mitsuha's grandmother offered sake, she said that in order to return from the afterlife, ``you must give away what is most important to you.'' It's the time and memories these two people shared. In exchange, the two were allowed to return to this world. Even if I lost my memory, I couldn't erase my feelings. That's why I thought Taki was right when he wrote "I love you" instead of her name. That was her driving force. P.S., the original author said that Okudera-Senpai married Tsukasa😊

Thanks for the reaction guys! I've rewatched this movie probably like five times by myself and twice more with other people, I love it so much. Every time, I pick up on more of the themes, foreshadowing, and character work. This time around it clicked for me how when Taki is looking for a job, he's remembering the feeling of being captivated by the comet and Itomori Village, even if he can't quite place exactly what hit him so hard about it. I'm currently finishing my Undergrad, and I have similar feeling of nostalgia when thinking about why I decided along this path 4 years ago, as it's been integrated with 4 years of life experiences. That initial fire is still with me, even if the specifics are fleeting. This movie builds onto those moments which shape your life even as the memories fade. Iit's almost as if Makoto Shinkai is saying our own ambitions, relationships, and inspirations could have been as beautiful as this movie, but we just might not remember it. Again, thanks for providing me with a reason to rewatch this movie, this time with my favorite dynamic duo. If you want another movie to ABSOLUTLY bawl at, A Silent Voice (Koe No Katachi), as many have recommended was released on the same year as Your Name, and I would love to see you guys react to that one too. Id recommend giving some time to let this movie sit, and then clearing your schedule for a similar emotional roller coaster.

This movie is about dreams while we sleep imo. Most of time, we forget events in our dream. Only happiness, sadness or fear feelings remain after we wake up and no matter how hard we try to remember the events, we can't remember. That's how Mitsuha and Taki felt in this movie.

53:50 There is a pattern for this, just not the same is all. A common Western's story's building method uses the 3 arc structure: beginning, middle, and end (derived from Aristotle). Meanwhile, a lot of Eastern story building consists of 4 point structure (as far as I know, its origin comes from China), the Japanese version of this is Ki (起), Sho (承), Ten (転), Ketsu (結), roughly translated as: introduction, development, twist, and conclusion. The 'twist' part of this structure is usually where a story can throw in a new unexpected development which then halts all progress that have occurred during the 'development' part. If you noticed, as you're also currently watching Haikyuu, the episodes almost always ends at a 'cliffhanger', that's because they set it up in a way that it ends during a 'twist'. Extra notes, unlike Western's common storytelling, where there's always a protagonist and an antagonist (good - bad), the Eastern's counterpart does not. Typically, as with most of Eastern's belief of there's always a need for balance between the two, there's no ultimate good nor bad, a lot of stories does not have a 'villain' role. Haha, just like in Haikyuu, just tense matches, or this movie.... well unless you count the meteor as the 'antagonist' 😅. I'm sorry for the long explanation, it's something that I studied, hope it helps, but I just wanted to say that I love watching both of your reactions a lot! It really brightens my day and I get excited every time I get a new notification for a new vid from you guys 🥰. Oh for your next viewing, I might recommend one of my fave, a film I used for my thesis 😅: "A Silent Voice" or 聲の形 (Shape of Voice), let's see if we can get you both to cry this time hehe

An amazing conclusion! I don't actually have that much to add to this part that I didn't already say in the previous part, but I will say my favorite tell for who is in whose body. They each wear the braided cord in their own bodies because they don't know the other one has it. When Taki is in Mitsuha's body, he wears the ponytail because it's easier but he ALSO doesn't remember that she is the one that gave it to him and doesn't know the time difference for most of the movie. He does wear it on his wrist when he is in his own body, you can catch little glimpses of it various times in the early parts of the movie. Similarly, Mitsuha has no idea that Taki has the cord in his time, so she wouldn't think to grab it and wear it like he does. I love how much this film touches on these indescribable feelings we get sometimes. That we're searching for something, for someone, but we can't really explain why. Of a deep spiritual connection with someone else. Ah, a few more instances of foreshadowing from Part 1 that I had to delete: * The teacher in the beginning is teaching about Kataware Doki (twilight) and that it is believed to be the time where the physical and supernatural world cross over. This has an obvious connection to later in the film * The dance at the shrine that Mitsuha and Yotsuha are doing in the beginning with the Sake is actually modeled on a real dance, and it is something like "the dance of the dragons". The comet is named Tiamat (as said on tv in the beginning), and Tiamat is famously associated with being a dragon. Further, if you watch the dance you can see that it is showing one thing splitting into two pieces and separating, just like both the comet and Taki/Mitsuha. It is not a far stretch to assume that this dance was to remind the future generations of what was coming, but sadly the meaning of their traditions was lost when their records burned down from the great Mayogoro Fire (poor Mayogoro, they named the fire after him) * When grandma is describing Musubi, she says that time is like a braided cord; it weaves and connects, sometimes fraying, and then tying back together to reconnect. This is a fantastic metaphor for the time travel and how not only are they connected through time, but that the timeline frayed and reconnected in a different shape. * The name Itomori (the town) is written with characters representing Threads and Guarding/Protecting. Again, obvious connections here. The movie is SO full of incredible foreshadowing in small scenes all through the beginning that all come back and tie together (wink wink) in the end. Every time I watch it I am in awe. I'm so glad you guys loved it, it's one of my all-time favorite movies, and the "I love you" scene makes me tear up every time.

Sarah! If Taki would have write his name onto Mitsuha's hand, his name would have disappeared, just like her notes from Taki's phone! Because the timeloop would have erased everything that is interefering the "one" timeline! So, even if he would have wrote his name, she would have forgot it, and the words would have not stayed there. This is why it was a genius move from him to write his confession. Although it is true, that she still couldn't remember his name, or him at all. But she always had that memory with her, and she was kind of "looking" for him until the end! I am also a feeler, I cry every time I watch this part, Sarah, so don't even worry, no one thinks you are embarrassing, and how sweet from Adam that he understands you so well! He is such a good support for you in this one! Answering to Adam, me, as someone who watched over 800 animes: if I would have focused on the story so intensely for the first time, I might would have picked up some things, that would not have been a big surprise for me. There were hints in the movie, even sometimes just a tiny visuals, that you won't really notice, if you for example won't pause the anime, and look at the screen... For example, the movie was starting with Taki and Mitsuha, as they were adult, talking about feeling that something is missing... Or the hairtie, that Mitsuha gave to Taki, the scene was also at the very beginning. If I would have keep them in mind, and remember myself of them, I could tell, that Mitsuha will survive the hit at the end. There were always a picture of Taki's time's sky, without the comet, he kept asking "what comet" the entire time, before the switching stopped. And then the twilight thing and Musubi in the previous half of the movie, which were cleary mentioned with a reason... If I have wrote these down first time I watched it, I could have put these together. But I usually try to watch everything with a "blind" mind, I am making theories, but I am not dwelling on an idea too much, so this way I won't figure out a lot of things, before I should figure them out. As an experienced anime watcher, this is my "trick" to be able to not see the twists, and enjoy every second of it. I like to just watch it without analyzing. But I would be definitely able to do it, if I want, just looking at the screen a bit more, and as I kinda understand the 90% of the japanese speaking and the mechanics behind the animations, the tricks they do to your mind, the hints, etc... yeah. But there are also SOME mastermind as well, that can outsmart the most of us. :D If you ever heard for example Attack On Titan, that show is also full of twists, and very few people could catch all the hints throughout the show. These movies are also very well written. There are quite a few shows, that would make you surprised, even if you are an expert. Or, let say, if you are not a reactor. I see many reaction channels, and some of them are better in getting ideas and figuring things out for their first time - not as if your reaction would be any less by this. To be fair, I don't like, when someone hits all the nails in a reaction. :D That feels just fake, or even spoilery. XD It is perfect, if you don't know, what is going to happen, or make wrong theories, these are the best parts of a reaction. Thank you very much the both of you for making these reactions, and I just wanted to say, I cannot wait for more. I hope you are going to do more, even maybe more seires reaction together as well. I know I am probably asking for too much. XD But I love your reactions, and you make a perfect couple for these movies, and for the Haikyuu videos as well. Sarah, you smile a lot more, and laugh a lot more (and definitely cry a lot more XD) when Adam is with you, and I also love your shared stories about your personal life! It makes the reaction much more fun and interesting. Also, can I ask, would you ever consider to make a collaboration video/vlog/anything with Coach Donny? It could be about volleyball or Haikyuu, or just a fun talk, I just think, it could make a great surprise video as well from you three. If you even know, who he is. XD (He has a volleyball channel too - Elevate yourself -, and has reactions to Haikyuu and Kuroko's Basketball.) I know this was probably out of the nowhere question, but I just had to ask. XD

Thank you for watching "Your Name." This movie was released in Japan in 2016 and I went to see it in the movie theater. It was five years after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, and it was around this time that films about the disaster began to be produced. "Your Name" was a big hit due to various reasons, such as the beautiful animation and the music by a famous musician, but it was also criticized for its science fiction flaws. For me, however, thinking about the more than 20,000 people who died in the Great East Japan Earthquake and the people around them, I feel a longing to "see them again" in this film. After this film, Shinkai made two more films, both of which pay homage to the disaster and are sometimes referred to as the "earthquake trilogy. For personal reasons, I went to see the third film, "Suzume" three times. I hope you will enjoy it as well.

Was so wonderful enjoying this reaction series and seeing you both go through this emotional journey! Adam’s made out of steel not tearing up at all and loved his interpretation of its better to write “I love you” and letting her know in case they do never meet that being said I was totally with Sarah on the first watch and yelling WHY DIDNT YOU WRITE YOUR NAME TAKI PLEAAAAAASE even though the magic would have probably erased it. Your Name is just so beautifully animated and the score is so well done by RANDWIMPS it really is a classic! To answer Adams question I do feel like you begin to pick up certain anime tropes and things to expect the deeper you dive in because just like Western/American directors and writers there are certain styles/tropes they love to use. The cool thing about anime is there’s so much out there that it does take a while to pick up on some things, but it’s definitely possible I think if you watch all of Shinkai’s (director of Your Name) work you might be able to tell some things, but anime is an unpredictable medium so you’ll still be surprised! Now if I were to recommend a movie that hasn’t already been said everyone has been recommending Miyazaki films and Weathering With You and A Silent Voice all of which you definitely should watch! I’d highly recommend Summer War!

53:50 Adam's question: Western writting follows a more direct approach when writting stories, usually with beginning -> middle -> ending, but Japanese stories usually follow a classical writting style where you have beginning -> development -> plot twist -> climax. This doesn't really affect the story that much but you might be able to mentally split the story and know when and from where the plot will be coming from, more or less, and authors are able to take a little more time with the development prepping things than in western stories imo. Also, there are multiple genres of anime and some of them have certain types of characters that will always be there and certain ways of finishing up a story, so you can also deduce more or less where it's going and which characters will be relevant or not. Besides that, it's all up to the author's creativity, which I think it's why manga and anime have become so much more popular than Marvel/DC comics, author's are always trying to innovate and try weird twists in already tried ideas and you can always find something new in a genre you might have thought was already done. You guys (mainly Sarah) have watched mostly the more wholesome kinda anime, but I really hope one day you guys can watch some darker shows as well because there are some really good ones out there. Some recommendations: Silent Voice, I want to eat your pancreas and Maquia. Some not so wholesome shows, if one day you guys decide to try them out: Death Parade, Death Note, and maybe if you are feeling experimental there's this classic movie called Perfect Blue, but honestly I don't know if this is a good rec, it's a hit or miss in my experience, maybe read the synopsis beforehand in case you guys don't like this type of movie! Anyway, love you guys!! 🇧🇷

Little note to the whole name on the hand thing. 1. "I love you" is a much stronger and intense feeling than just some name, knowing there is someone that loves you is a much stronger emotion than remembering some name, and there was no guarantee that Mitsuha would be able to connect the name to something, it might end up being a random name to her without meaning anyway. 2. Earlier in the movie, Mitsuha wrote her name on Taki's hand/arm (can't remember right now) and there you can see that her name starts with a curve as first stroke (sequence of strokes is very important in Japanese), but when they both met at Kataware-doki, she started to write "her name" with a straight line, that means she wasn't trying to write her name either. And if then look at what Taki wrote on her hand, you can see that it starts with a straight line, so it's actually pretty likely that Mitsuha wanted to write "I love you" as well ^^ Loved the reaction btw! I can highly recommend the next movie from Makoto Shinkai (the regisseur of Your Name), called Weathering With You (there are cameos from Your Name in it too :D).

As a pretty avid anime watcher, I can say that the way a story progresses differs a lot by the director. Miyazaki (who did Spirited Away) has said that he creates most of his movies as he goes along so a lot of his movies take sudden turns. I don't know about Shinkai (who did this film) but judging from his other films they appear to be planned out, especially because of the music he incorporates. But once you get to know Shinkai you can start picking up on his antics. Anime is such a huge genre with content for all demographics so it's really hard to generalize, but I think anime takes more creative liberties than Hollywood does.

I'm going by memory here, but I believe I learned the following from one of the "extras" on my home Blu-ray copy of the movie. Anyway, I recall Shinkai explaining in an interview that the seed of the idea for Your Name came from when he wondered what it would be like to meet someone, perhaps a love interest, and be convinced you had met them before - that you knew them intimately - even though you couldn't explain how or when. That was the seed from which the rest of the story germinated, so: yes, he developed the story before they began producing anything.

I think on the predictability point, it depends a lot ON the anime. Your Name is well crafted in a way that could go anywhere. And plenty of other anime movies and shows are like that. But for every Utena there's a Sword Art Online where everything is just kinda by the book.

Thanks for your reaction! Loved it ❤ About anime films: It depends on the genre, some do follow a formula and you can predict where the story is going, and there's tropes that repeat in many. But many of them just do their own thing.

53:50 To answer Adam’s question about storytelling, I’ll try but I really don’t think I have the ability to explain (considering also that English isn’t my primary language). Contrary to certain theories that were popular few decades ago, storytelling doesn’t necessarily follow universal rules and how people structure stories’ parts, conflicts or even protagonists or antagonists varies widely across cultures and times. Japanese writers among other structures learn what they call kishōtenketsu, a four part sequence or structure. You can google the word, or also look it up on KZfaq, although I would take it with caution some of the results. But anime often uses kishōtenketsu. Another thing to look at: Studio Ghibli films you previously watched philosophically and purposefully avoid good vs evil or evil being something you can easily define and therefore isolate and punish kind of stories. Another: unreliable narrators and the necessity to verify what is being said versus what is being shown, for example why so many people in the Haikyuu community are insisting for you both to give Oikawa’s story and circumstances another chance. Remember that it is considered more elegant to tell stories avoiding being straightforward and spoon feeding the watchers in Japanese storytelling, but that means that the audience needs to pay attention. Which is the opposite of the little I watched in Northern American movies about sports where I felt like especially in representing high schoolers they created easy to recognize stereotypes rather than representing people. Again I am no expert and just going with my feelings and tastes, but I was curious too, so I have sometimes read an article about different ways of telling stories within visual media. I am partial to manga in that way, especially ones from the 1970s-1990s when there was an abundance of freedom and creativity. Consider that often anime series are adaptations of manga stories, so that individual creativity can translate to industry endeavors. I hope my comment helped. Edited for clarity and spelling.

As the "anime experienced" among us, personally i had no idea where the story was going either. I picked up on the body swap trope very quickly but I could never guess the timeline twist and whether they were going to be successful with saving the town. Anything could've happened there and that says a lot about the anime landscape.

Hi again! Agreed with everyone recommending A Silent Voice. It came out around the same time as Your Name and it's evenly split between who likes which more. If Your Name is about the beauty of meeting someone for the first time and the power that comes from treasuring those newfound bonds, A Silent Voice is about becoming someone who positively affect people around you. About what Adam mentioned about whether people who watch a lot of anime know how the stories go; generally yes. However, I don't think anyone who watched Your Name would have had any idea how it's story would go since it's such a special story. Shoutout to the band Radwimps and their song Sparkle which was played during the climactic comet scene - it's one of my favourite pieces among all movie soundtracks.

As an avid anime watcher from the West, I'd say that these stand alone movies tend to be a lot less predictable for myself. I've watched the majority of Studio Ghibli's catelog along with a few other movies and each one feels like Im jumping into a new world with its own rules and identity. Makes the experience pretty fresh. In comparisson though, after watching a few series across different genres( but admittedly mostly shonen), watching another series in the same genre tends to feel a lot more predictable in comparison. (still enjoyable though) I'd be interested in hearing the opinion of someone from the East who grew up in that environment/culture though.

I would say that this is very much a shonen/shojo thing (since they are aimed at YA audience so less work is required to satisfy) - was reminded of that several times watching primarily Seinen. For example I remember watching Kuzu no Honkai (Scum's Wish) and for about 3 episodes I am like "Okay so this is going to be a classic romance anime but less innocent?" - nah turns out that the anime has insanely deep and emotional message that it just took me half the story and one ending watch to start grasping. With the right genre the messages are insanely deep and quite often even things western media wouldnt even dare tackle.

More than 90% of Japanese consider themselves non-religious. For Japanese people, religion is usually only involved in ceremonies. When a baby is born, it is normal to have a celebration at a shrine, a wedding at a church, and a funeral at a Buddhist temple. However, I think Japanese people believe in the existence of God very much. For the Japanese, God exists in everything. Basically, we are a country of ANIMISM. Even sewing needles are considered to have a god, and they even hold funerals for old needles. The fact that God exists in everything may be the same as the fact that everything is connected. It could be called "musubi". Japanese people believe that helping others will bring good things back to them. For example, wearing a mask is not only to protect oneself, but also to prevent the spread of viruses to others. In this way, they believe that their actions will protect themselves and will come back to them as a good thing. That is why so many people wear masks. And it is something that is never forced upon them. I think it is similar to the "Gaia theory" or the "pay it forward" way of thinking. By the way, the director of this movie, Makoto Shinkai, was inspired and influenced by a novel called "Story of Your Life," and there is a movie called "Message" based on this novel. It is a very different science fiction movie, but the concept of the story is the same, and it is a very moving movie.

Predictability... no, the writer-director is known for unrequited love stories so the final scene could have easily been omitted. The red string of fate tying two together a couple that is destined to be together is a classic oriental story involving the god of the moon - here you saw fate removing all trace of their 'dreams' after they wake up but their love remained because of the moon god's red string... if Taki had written his name on her hand then it too would have faded. One thing I really appreciate in anime is that they're not afraid to break genres; use - subvert - and flip expectations; and even change protagonists mid story. There are countless animes out there where they lose, the main character dies or everything is undone by the end - it makes any new show or film feel fresh and potentially unpredictable in a good way.

As far as whether or not this movie had elements that were predictable to those of us who watch a lot of anime: This movie broke the mold in a few ways. Especially so if you followed Makoto Shinkai's previous films. He always made visually stunning films, but this took it to the next level. And his prior movies also were less fantastical. And there's a spoiler for 5 Centimeters per Second (his 2007 film) in the paragraph separated below which goes into another reason why the ending was actually very unexpected from him. But first, if you want some more recommendations: A Silent Voice is another beautiful movie which Sarah will want a box of tissues for, Perfect Blue is a very different kind of movie (psychological thriller made by the late Satoshi Kon who directed many masterpieces), Ghost in the Shell is an absolute classic, and Mamoru Hosoda made a lot of great movies (of which Wolf Children is my favorite). As for the 5 Centimeters per Second parallels: Anyone who watched that movie knows Shinkai is 100% not above having those two just keep walking at 49:50. He even started that entire sequence off with two trains separating from each other, lol! The first time I watched this movie, I almost jumped out of my seat like "No! You can't do this to me again!" when I was in the theater, lol.

It was super fun to watch this movie again with your guys, there's many things that I didn't remember or get the first time I watched years ago. Like, I pretty sure it wouldn't matter if Taki wrote his name on her hand because it would have been erased anyway like all the messages on his phone, so writing "I love you" was the right call and what gave her the boost to keep running (and maybe that message got erased too eventually). A must watch after Studio Ghibli and Your Name if you are getting into anime movies is Silent Voice. Just prepare to cry twice as harder lol Also I think it would be fun if you guys watch some classicals. If you are okay with violence then I recommend "Akira". Sarah would make lots of theory in this one haha

We thought she would write her own name on Takis hand but Mitsuha was actually going to write something else that starts with a long horizontal stroke..There's not many characters that fit this bill, depending on your handwriting style, but the character will always start with a long horizontal line in any handwritten form. Which means that she was probably intending to write I love you herself.

I watched a lot of things with an unpredictable plot, and I thought that nothing could surprise me anymore, but in anime "Attack on Titan", it is almost impossible to predict events. It seems to me that you two definitely need to watch anime "Attack on Titans". If you like an interesting plot, a lot of mysterious things to be constantly on the hook. Although this is fantasy, but there is a lot of realism in it, a very well thought out world. Everyone should see it, no one will remain indifferent. It's an emotional roller coaster. 1. Staging scenes as the greatest cinema, so many scenes I want to review countless times admiring their genius. AOT is able to create insane tension and catharsis. A lot of philosophical thoughts. And a lot makes you think, and understand something new for yourself. 2. Excellent elaboration of the plot from beginning to end. 3. Attention to small things and details. A superbly designed universe 4. Amazing music, emotional and making me cry, perfectly conveying the atmosphere. With thoughtful lyrics. 5. The Japanese voice acting is worthy of an Oscar (need to watch with subtitles).

It doesnt hide anything, you just need to conect the dots 😂 A friend of mine told me that, if they didnt meet at he end, he would stop being my friend. As for next one... A silent voice is grear but that one is a really rollecoster of emotions (and with several trigger warnings soooo) Suzume is from the same autor or Howl's moving castle is a classic

Given you enjoyed this, you might want to check out other stuff that hits hard emotionally, the classics are Anohana and Clannad, for a shorter and longer option respectively. Clannad is a little slow to start, but it really connects you to the characters, and then delivers on really using that connection to make you care about a story.

When I recommend this movie I always have the same thought, once you have seen this movie I wouldn't know what to recommend to see because it is the greatest work that has been made in anime, at least from my point of view. The older films have a great story but although the animation is still beautiful they have lower animation quality, and the ones that are more modern although they have great animation, the stories are less memorable or with less feeling I would say. Even so, you should see each of the films by Makoto Shinkai or Hayao Miyazaki, they are all incredible in their own way. PS: I also cry every time I see this movie. T_T

Love the reaction! There is a reason this is considered the best of the best :3 Regarding the I love you - I remember when I was watching this with my then girlfriend who had similar reaction. I said "He did not write his name but he wrote what was truly important". Also I am sure someone mentioned this already but the animation is insane - the scenes are literally 1:1 recreations of real places. The stairs Mitsuha and Taki meet on are literally a place in Tokyo one can visit and fans often do. Regarding the cliches - I would say there are plenty of cliches - like the whole "YOU TOUCHED MY BOOBS" part is about as cliche as it gets but for the most part I would say its not as predictable as western media - mainly I suspect that the reason is that most anime starts as a manga or light novel and those media have ton of creative freedom - then since anime is usually very on-point with the original, it stays unexpected.
