Your Roomba s9 & i7 Are Scratching Your Floors

The roller brush and brush housing design of the s9 and i7 (and similar models) are capable of scratching your floors to the point where you may notice it in a few weeks or months. I discovered this recently by chance. This video shows what happened to my floors and some tests I did with plexiglass and various vacuum robots to see which will scratch your floors and which won't.
UPDATES:
1. The T8 AIVI had some hard grit stuck to its caster wheel, that is why it caused those scratches. Once removed, it behaved exactly like the other hybrid brush robots.
2. I have decided to keep the i7. I love it too much to return it, and as further testing has revealed, its floor scratching potential is far smaller than that of the s9, and the brushes have to be cleaned/washed far less often. So it stays! I am happy. What is Mr. Roombato without a Roomba??
3. The s9 is gone, and good riddance. If you have only carpets and ceramic or stone floors, it's one of the best cleaning robots on the market. For anything else, buyer beware.

This was a brilliant test. I'm currently shopping for a new robot vacuum since my trusty 6 year old Neato D7 is no longer supported. At the top of my list was the Roomba S9+, but now I'm rethinking that since half of my floors are laminate. I also encountered floor-marring issues with the D7 though, since every time it left it's base, would move forward a few inches, stop, and spin the brushes for a while. This left a shiny spot on the laminate over the years where the brushes were constantly buffing the floor. In addition, the D7 really did a number on the hallway Berber carpet by fraying the loops. After a few months of use, I banned the vacuum from going onto any carpeted areas. Hoping to find a good vac soon that will work well on all floor types. Meanwhile, my powerful Kenmore upright is still working great after 20 years.

Like others, I’m so thankful that you bravely posted this video. I had just purchased an S9 and was quite wowed by its cleaning performance but we have stained concrete floors that are surprisingly scratchable and so I immediately returned it after seeing this test and bought an Ecovacs T8 AIVI. I’ve been pretty happy with it but share your frustration with the app. BTW I love how you talk to your robots! I do the same thing and my family thinks I’m nuts! 😆⭐️

You're welcome! Just keep two things in mind. The i7 scratches the floor MUCH less than the S9, and if you clean the brushes regularly you won't have a problem. Also, every robot vacuum, every moved chair, ever time you walk on it, everything scratches the floor. The S9 is just ridiculous about it, the i7 is not that bad and you just have to stay on top of it. But I still wouldn't get one unless I got it with the bin at a crazy price. There are just much better robots out there.

Thanks for sharing this test. It certainly seems likely that any dirty roller will scratch (more than a clean one), but I wonder if this is fixable in software or differs with floor material? Roomba touts their robots ability to adjust height based on cleaning surface. Could the transparency of plexiglass interfere with the IR sensors below? I've always found those types of sensors to be very finicky and unreliable. Do you know if the height adjustment seems servo controlled or is it just reactive to the landscape beneath it?
@MrRoombato
@MrRoombato 2 жыл бұрын
The Roombas don't adjust the height of the brush housing with sensors, they do it with spring pressure. On carpet, the carpet fibers push up on the housing, and it rises. The s9 in particular is designed to clean carpets very well by pressing down hard and sealing the housing to the floor. That is why it scratches a lot more than the i7, despite using the same brushes. You can "fix" the s9 by limiting the down travel range of the brush housing, but then you will find that it's not a very good vacuum.

Depends on what you prefer and can put up with. My current favorite is the Neabot Q11, but the app is poorly executed/translated. Not in terms of functionality, just user interface issues. Hi and thanks for this really informative video.And all your other videso. In late December I bought a Roomba J7 and thought it was great at mapping and picking up dirt on three floors of my house. Then, after looking at your video I started examining my floors which are quarter sawn white oak with a natural finish. Anyway, as I looked at these floors after about 5 times with the J7 I started seeing all sorts of scratches. Now, I am not sure whether they have been here before just from other vacuums going over the floor before we even bought the house. That said I see you think the Neabot Q11 is the best robot to buy now. Just wondering should I get rid of the J7 and buy the Neatbot Q11? Would love your thoughts.
@MrRoombato
@MrRoombato 2 жыл бұрын
If it's the j7, it's probably fine. The j7 / i7 don't scratch nearly as much as the s9. Just wash the brushes every now and then and you should be okay. So I'd keep it. As far as the Q11, I've kinda retracted my recommendation. First, it's buggy, and they tried fixing it, and they fixed some things, but it's still something that will mess up your nightly scheduled cleaning fairly often for really dumb reasons. And second, if you have pets, the fuzzy main brush is like a pet hair magnet.

Thank you Mr. Roombato for this video! I have an older Roomba 531 (very old, I know, but it still works) which still has the old brushes (plastic and bristle brush). What I did notice was the front caster wheel (mine already has some wear and tear) gets stuck sometimes after a turn and gets dragged all over the floor, creating light scratches on my wooden flooring. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news. But you don't have to get rid of the s9, just wash its brushes in the sink after every time it cleans (assuming it's cleaning the whole house). You will probably have to do things like remove hair from the main brushes or side brushes anyway, this just adds an extra step. Everything you do to your floors scratches the protective finish, even walking on them. The issue here is that if you have something essentially sanding/polishing the floors every day, that finish will wear off faster than it should (but we're talking years here). If you do decide to get something else, I recommend the Neabot NoMo, or, grumble grumble, the T8 or N8. Neither has the polish and perfection of the iRobot app and customer experience, and their self empty bins are not as good, but once you see them navigating and doing their job, you'll never look at the s9 the same way again. The s9 definitely has advantages over both of those robots, so you have to decide whether washing the brushes is worth it. If you like the robot, then it very well might be.

I have had a rooms J7+ for few weeks and I had the same concern. I tested and watched how it worked. The rubber part does touch the hardwood floor slightly. However, no scratches found so far. I believe it really depends how dirty the floor is. If the floor has full of sand type dirt, it could potentially scratches the floor. In my case, the floors are just got dirty by soft dust and J7 won't scratch.

If you've seen any of my newer videos, you'll know I have black floors in my kitchen. Bad idea. Very, very bad idea! But when clean they look great! So I feel your pain. An i7+ and m6 should be fine, just wash the brushes on the i7 every time you clean them for hair and/or clean the filter. If you want to be even safer, get any LIDAR robot (except the Roborock S7, maybe) and the m6. The thing where it starts right after the vac stops is a gimmick. You can set that up yourself in the cleaning schedules. The problem I see is that you need a robot that can mop on a schedule with minimal interference from you. The only robot I know that can do that is the m6, with an occasional pad change and water fill being all that's required. If the black floor is a small space, all the better.

Thank you for the analysis. I have 1 year old Bagotte BG800. It is a similar to the Eufys - probably just rebranded. It has a mapping function but only shows where the robot has been. You can't save the map and can't make it go to individual areas. When it goes it just vacuums everywhere it can get to. Very low height so it goes under everything. I run it at night as it does not need light at all. My whole house is wood except for my guest room, bathroom, foyer & kitchen. I do not have pets. The BG800 still works but I have retired it as the battery does not last as long anymore. It does not have the repeat function so every time it returns home it will charge up and run the next schedule with no memory where it left off. It does not run as eratic as the Roomba 675. It goes in a pattern up & down. I have not seen any scratch marks from it. It is almost half the weight of the i7 and has actual brushes like 675 (which I need to clean a lot as the dust clogs it up). Has a 2200pa suction which fluctuates as it moves from carpet to tiles/wood. Recently purchased the i7+ combo with the M6 mopping robot. Love the I7 mopping as now I tell it to go where I need it most - kitchen and bathrooms.. These are all tile areas. After seeing your video I got concerned so now I run my i7 twice a month on my wood floor and use my M6 with dust pad to sweep the wood floors every alternate day and I can tell it to go specific areas I need swept most often. I have invested in several pads so I change the pad after each sweep.

@MrRoombato
@MrRoombato 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it was stuff caught in the caster wheel. The T8's caster wheel is a little more prone to picking stuff up than some of the others. It doesn't really increase the maintenance interval but it makes so that I have to scrape off the caster wheel as part of it. Not a biggie. Just be aware of it and don't worry about it. I have a video about caster wheel maintenance that you should watch if you buy the T8: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qtylh5R3zdqUh4U.html The T8 AIVI is one of the two best robots I have by far, and it's the better of the two (better than Roborock S6 MaxV, which has much better AI though) because of its dual side brushes, auto-empty bin and available vibrating mop (the mop on the S6 is useless and just takes up valuable dust bin space). HOWEVER...be warned. The Ecovacs app is buggy. I mean, all of the apps are buggy, including iRobot's, but the Ecovacs one is more buggy than the rest. It's not a deal breaker but it can be a little annoying. They do have a neat in-app live chat feature which has come in extremely handy. Overall, I highly recommend the T8 AIVI with auto-empty bin. It's the primary working robot in my house right now, and my new choice for "if I could only have one" (which used to be the i7+).
@MrRoombato
@MrRoombato 3 жыл бұрын
The T8 AIVI also can't do the thing where you use the remote control mode to map your house in five minutes. But like all LIDAR robots, it makes a very accurate map the first time around (though the app doesn't have any self confidence and tells you to refine the map through additional cleanings after the first time, which I ignore) and it does it very quickly. They plan to add that feature, or so they say, in a future update.
@MrRoombato
@MrRoombato 3 жыл бұрын
Also be aware that if you leave a door closed and the robot cleans that area, it will decide that the area behind the door is no longer accessible. You will have to pick it up and put it right near the opened doorway for it to decide otherwise. But it's not unique in that regard. Also it, like all good LIDAR robots, can find itself anywhere in the map once it makes it. So you can just pick it up and move it places, or move its base station (or auto-empty bin) without having to remap. You will love that after owning a Roomba. If you make any changes to your house (like moving a couch more than a few inches), you will piss off the Ecovacs app and it will delete all of your room labels. I wish I were joking. :)

It's a matter of degrees. Let's say that based on the test results, the degree of scratching is 1 to 100, with 100 being the Roomba s9. It depends on where you live and how many pets you have. A brushless robot would either not clean very well or it would get clogged up really fast in my house, depending on its design. But if that works for you, then that is a good option. However, if you look at my tests of the other robots, those with hybrid brushes don't scratch floors unless they get debris caught in the caster wheel rubber (that's what happened to the T8 AIVI), which brushless robots also have. So why not use one of those for a better overall clean?

@MrRoombato
@MrRoombato 3 жыл бұрын
No, I mean that I didn't clean them for the test. Back when I had the S9, it was responsible for cleaning my entire top floor and I cleaned the brushes (washed them under the sink, etc.) and the rest of the vac every two or three days. I used to enjoy it. Because it cleaned the whole house, they would get about as dirty as they were in that test after ONE cleaning. If I have to wash the brushes every day, what's the point of the clean base? I may as well empty the dust bin as part of routine daily maintenance! When I tested the i7, I had it clean my top floor once before the test...those brushes were the result. I still have the i7, but it only cleans my living room, and so I clean the brushes about once a week and they are never anywhere near as dirty as they were in this test. In general I do a full cleaning of every robot about once a week. I would do it more often if I only had one robot on active duty, but I have five cleaning daily, distributing the workload among them. Your brushes may not get as dirty as fast. I live in a rural area (no sidewalks) and I have dogs.
@MrRoombato
@MrRoombato 3 жыл бұрын
Also, say that you were right in your assumption. Say that I never cleaned my robots until the app complained that they couldn't move because of all the hair on the brushes (or whatever would force a negligent owner to clean them). Under those circumstances, unless they caught a screw or something in the brush, a hybrid brush robot would NOT scratch your floors, whereas a rubber brush robot would. The only consequence of not cleaning an Ecovacs or Neabot would be that they no longer cleaned effectively. And that's why I made this video. Do you want a robot that you have to clean thoroughly very often or it will punish you by damaging your expensive hardwood floors, or do you want a robot that, if neglected, will just not clean as well? That's up to you! But I think you deserve to know the truth so that you can make an informed decision.
