Thank you for your video. Regarding 4:15 & 4:23, It is actually Nephrite that is tougher & more durable than Jadeite which is harder, denser but more brittle. Jadeite is a pyroxene mineral comprised of sodium aluminum iron silicate which has a Mohs hardness range from 6.5 to 7 and a specific gravity range from 3.28 to 3.38. On the other hand, Nephrite is an amphibole mineral comprised of calcium magnesium iron silicate having microcrystalline interlocking fibrous matrix which makes it tougher & more durable than Jadeite. Nephrite has a Mohs hardness range from 6 to 6.5 and a specific gravity range from 2.9 to 3.1. Thus Nephrite is slightly less hard and less dense than Jadeite. Jadeite and Nephrite do resemble similar minerals. The name Nephrite is derived from the Latin name Lapis Nephriticus which means stone for the kidney. Its Spanish name is piedra de ijada which gave rise to the name Jadeite. In olden days some cultures believed that jadeite or nephrite could alleviate pain from the kidneys. It was not until 1863 that French mineralogist Augustin Alexis Damour identified the differences between Jadeite from Nephrite as two separate minerals. The Chinese began lapidary work on Nephrite over 5,000 years ago. However during the 18th century, Jadeite imported from Burma into China became more popular than Nephrite for art and jewelry. This was because Jadeite has more vivid color and can be polished to a vitreous sheen whereas Nephrite's color is more subdued and its polish does not gleam as much as Jadeite. In Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica jadeite was also highly prized and fashioned into ceremonial art and jewelry objects. Nephrite is tougher than Jadeite which is harder but more brittle and prone to fracture. Nephrite was tough enough to make adze, axe heads and weapons before bronze in China supplanted Neolithic tools. Since Nephrite is such a tough stone, the Maori in New Zealand also used Nephrite which they call Pounamu to make adzes called toki, war clubs called mere and amulets called hei tiki and hei matau.

I have a black jade bracelet that was bought for me by my boyfriend at the time, in San Francisco. It wasn't as pricy as the dark green of course, but I preferred it. It's in a 24 k gold setting and I can testify, quite durable and very lovely.

Thanks for making the video, as an amateur lapidarist theres alot of information to absorb in regards to jade. I was aware of the treatment methods but learned about the ABC classes in this video. I think more people would be less leery about chemically stabilized stones if sellers would just explain the process with honesty. Treated stones will never compete with pure natural material in respect to the price, but taking a mined rough and making it suitable to cut and polish still has value to me. Great content following.

Good video.. color is a primary factor.. and color is firstly divided into categories: ‘yang’ (cheerful) or ‘yin’ (gloomy).. For every jadeite color, translucency and texture ‘compound’ the price.. they enable the stone to have an inner glow ‘pulsating’ within.. no other gemstones display such attributes.. Please note blue is also another color of jadeite..

I had a Imperial jadeite bracelet. In moonlight it glowed white. I have never read or heard about that. It is kind of magical.

Good video. Jade is prone to under cutting when being polished. There for it is sometimes epoxy/ resin filled. Then repolished smooth as glass. I'm a Lapidary artist.

I have the Jadeite Jade ring, grade A means untreated or uncolored. It came from Burma, and yes, it is hella expensive. I dont usually splurge my money on gemstone, but this jade costs me quite a saving. I also proved it with the Skylab card/certificate. No, I don't intend to sell it. Just share how expensive real Jade is. Currently, I am saving my money to buy Ruby.

Thanks for the great information! I visited Hong Kong a few years ago and I stayed in the jade district. I didn't buy anything because I had no clue as to value. I feel like I am at least somewhat knowledgeable now thanks.

I bought a lavender jadeite cabochon on ebay in 2009 that I naively thought was type A. A few years later I sent it to Mason-Kay for evaluation and learned it is actually type B. They have equipment that can definitively detect polymer treatment. I have a few more jadeite pieces I bought from ebay and most of them fluoresce under ultraviolet light. I am not an expert but if what I have read is correct, untreated jadeite does not fluoresce. However, if it does not fluoresce it could still be treated. The equipment needed for a definitive evaluation is too expensive, so now I prefer buying from Mason-Kay.

Howdy Mate ~ pardon my chipping in on this point, but I think it is important. To say that Jadeite is the more important stone historically is incorrect (timestamp 3:22+). Jadeite the mineral was not known to China until much more recently in history. Some sources point towards 1700's or so. Whereas the jade that literally defined many of the Chinese characters still used in writing today is connected with Nephrite, which is mined in various areas of China, from the northeast over to Xinjiang province on the far western frontier. A lot of the burial suits that were made out of nephrite "chicklets" can still be seen in the Henan province museum (the province which was cradle to Chinese civilization). If you have a chance to go check out the Royal Palace Museum（故宫博物院） in Taiwan, their Jade collection will melt your eyes. Its phenomenal. I enjoy your material, and totally appreciate your goal of educating folk and spreading knowledge of stones to the far corners of humanity. Keep at it matey!!!~

There are has been centuries old lore and superstitions that revolves around the wearing of jade as jewelry. The most common belief in China and Vietnam is that the quality and color of the jade changes depending on the wearers. A person with a positive aura energy(not necessarily by moral nature or personality)and perspiration can make the jade piece worn more beautiful, with and richer more intense coloring and gradience. While the opposite will diminish the quality of the jade and with lackluster quality. In a way like a mood ring though with longer and gradual noticeability. A family member told me a legend where jade bangles that been buried with the wearer corpse were found to have turned a deep scarlet color after absorbing the blood from the body when exhumed many years later. This is supposedly making it more more rare and valuable. The latter is more likely true than the former.

I am a Jade enthusiasts and I go to Itoigawa, Niigata Prefecture in Japan almost every week, traveling 6 hours of expressway car drive just to pick-up this amazing stone. only place where you can find natural jadeite here in Japan. Place which is considered as national treasure. Where you can see large jadeite sitting along the river and the mountain surrounding it. Also in the seashore where jadeite is being washed by the waves that is also coming from the river I just mentioned.

Jade is my favorite stone. Ive found its the safest stone to wear for health. My pic is my burmese rainbow jade pendant, very rare. It has little red specks like paprika in it. On thr reverse is a laughing buddha w a miraculous “tilaka” mark apearinf on its forehead in the stone itself which is the typical appearance of that figure in nepal and india where hea known as kubera... ! Now i need to get to india to sell it to a rich devotee, most bizar.

I have green translucent imperial jade

Love jade. I have a miraculous burmese rainbow jadeite pendant with an auspicious symbol in the stone that corresponds to the carving. My pic is the reverse. Its a carving of kubera with a perfect tilak mark on then forhead. I scored so bad it hurts!

When you ask what all we’ve seen, I’ve seen quite a bit. I usually buy lots of antique or vintage jewelry that I take apart to use in my art, and I have to find ways to verify what type of material I have in front of me. From bone, to ivory, to coral, to pearls, to jade, I always am surprised at what I find in some of these second-hand jewelry lots.

I was just looking up if Jade came in more than just green, I'm glad my suspicions were correct. Very informative. I saw a Katana with a unique handle but it was made from a material I'm not used to seeing, mostly white with some obvious coloring..I was thinkin it could have possibly been jade but I've never heard of anyone making a jade hilt/grip before.

Aww should have talked about British Columbia :( BC has massive nephrite mines and supplies the majority of nephrite today. If folks want really cheap, natural nephrite, go to BC. People build entire patio decks out of jade flagstone it's so common in BC.

A couple of issues: nephrite is more durable (but less hard) than jadeite, and jade has been revered throughout Chinese history and even prehistory (artifacts date all the way back to the neolithic, and were plentiful throughout history as art, jewelry and grave goods), but jadeite was only introduced to China during the Qing dynasty (the final dynasty before the PRC), around the 18th century. There's a weird tendency to treat nephrite as "inferior" in all regards especially in English-language sources, but the science and history do not line up with those claims; The only thing that makes nephrite less valuable is how common it is, just as mutton fat nephrite is more valued because it's a rarer colour, not because it is more beautiful.

I did not heard about Rainbow range...but i heard about lavendel and white, and green of course. I love the clarity of the imperial green , and also the Moss and Snow. lavender too.

Thanks for the appreciated info, I purchase loose, Jade stones online to create my own jewelry. It doesn't have to be "Imperial." The less expensive and/or dyed gemstones work for me. Theres a variety of colors jaspeados , from light like white to Emerald Green or Imperial. ,Golden. And even Black, its amazing. In GUATEMALA you find JADEITA .

My hubby gave it to me as a gift and so I always forget to ask her about it. It has a lighter color green, has imperfection of 2 small darker colored green spots in it. So does that mean it's not been color treated? She usually will tell me. But pandemic has kept her shuttered in and her hubby is running the shop as an call in service.
