What is a natural emerald? While Emeralds are one of the most recognized and prized gems in the world, very few really understand what sets it apart or even the basic distinctions. We will discuss the common things to know and look for, but also talk about the more unique and interesting aspects of Emeralds.

Emerald Basics:
Green- there are other colors of
Beryl(pink-morganite,Blue Aquamarine)
Chromium-main green element
sometimes Vanadium
Most valuable often have a slightly bluish tone.
hexagonal crystal habit- rare to find nice specimens
7.5-8 MOHs hardness
More fragile because of inclusions. (Class III gem)
other things to watch out for-
-Treatments
-Lab Grown(Chatham)
-imitations-glass, dyed natural stones(including beryl)
-Egyptians had glass imitations of Emerald
other interesting facts-
Most emeralds came from Columbia-since found all over the world with notable finds in Zambia Afghanistan, Australia, Pakistan, Russia, and the United States.
Brazilian colored with vanadium was a real controversy.
some purists believed it is only Emerald if colored by Chromium. GIA alloyed Vanadium gems to be included.

In my opinion, Pakistani emeralds from the Swat valley region, and, in particular from the Gujar Killi mine are world class. These emeralds are often found to be comparable in quality and colour to some of the best Brazilian and Columbian stones yet considerably less costly when looking for a top quality stone, although, sometimes stones from the Swat valley contain excessive iron which may subdue the brightness whilst contributing to a more blueish hue. It's all a matter of personal taste when it comes to gemstones, I, myself am in agreeance with the general market in that I prefer emeralds with a slight blueish hue to those with more yellowish overtones, however, I know some people who prefer the more yellowish greens from Columbia, and, others who simply love the darker greens often seen in Zambian emeralds. Emeralds can be a bit tricky though with the acceptance of oiling, and, it being so prevalent in the industry, oiling has a way of hiding most of, if not, all of the surface reaching fractures, making it hard to be sure of what you're looking at. A detailed report, or, personal access to gemological equipment is a real benefit when purchasing emeralds for investment purposes. For those who simply want a gorgeous stone and don't care so much about the provenance, I'd suggest a hydrothermal synthetic emerald, they're in my opinion the most beautiful of the synthetics available.

12 years ago I walked into a local independent jewelry store and the lady I spoke to was very interested in making my dream of an emerald ring come true. May birthday so I've always wanted a birthstone ring. I picked out a setting and they ordered some emeralds for me to pick from. No one else has a ring exactly like mine. Most stores are - this is what we have, take it or leave it. I've also purchased a few of their estate sale rings, and I recommend them to my friends.

So very interesting :) Since I'll never be able to afford an emerald, I opted for a chrome diopside ring. I have to say, I absolutely LOVE my chrome diopside. The green is absolutely stunning and nearly flawless in the clarity. BUT, it''s also a softer stone so yes, I am careful with it.

Very informative video. About inclusions. I have an emerald and 18K gold pinky ring that I got a few years ago while on vacation. The inclusions are visible to the naked eye but you have to get up close with the stone to see them. The inclusions are wispy and found in the middle of the rectangular cut gem. To me, with you back up, the "jardin" gives the emerald a lush, velvety appearance. This is one of the three "serious" rings that I own, and one that I only wear on special occasions. I also have a pair of Chatham emerald stud earrings set in 14K. You can really see the difference when you put the natural emerald next to the lab created. The latter is much more saturated with more sparkle. Still, the character of the natural emerald makes it a favorite.

Hi! You mentioned that emeralds can be very hard, but fragile when not being perfectly clear. An emerald without imperfections would be durable enough to wear every day (like an engagement ring)? Or would you recommend another kind of stone? Any other in green color? :)
@robertbrandywine
@robertbrandywine Жыл бұрын
My wife has worn her lab grown emerald for years and hasn't broken it. Of course, lab grown have fewer inclusions and are therefore less fragile. Also, the emeralds recovered from the shipwreck of the Nuestra Senora de Atocha were on the sea bottom for 300 years and seem to have survived just fine, so are they really so fragile?

I am just beginning to shop for a real Colombian Emerald. My girlfriend is from Colombia and ONLY will accept an Emerald from there. I had heard, before watching your video, that Emeralds were not that hard and suggested to have some protection around it, whether some prongs or other metal or possibly stones/diamonds. Now that I know it is harder but fragile should I make sure the setting has some 'protection' around it to help protect it? Also, any specific questions I need to ask to insure a high quality true Emerald from Colombia? Thanks
@hybridgoth
@hybridgoth 8 ай бұрын
A traditional 'emerald cut' stone is more suitable for use in everyday jewellery, avoid round and oval cut stones as they have a higher chance of becoming damaged over time. There are numerous setting styles available, it's best to consult with the jeweller who is working on creating your piece(s) to discuss your concerns, depending on whether the stone(s) will be set in a ring or a pendant will effect the options, as rings are more prone to damage they'll generally require a more protective setting than pendants/earrings would. You should enquire about a stones treatment if any, and, a detailed gem report if available. I would also personally suggest that, if you can afford to pay a premium? Choose and untreated stone if possible.

Given there price point, there are a lot of jewelers ( especially chains) that choose not to carry much, if any, natural Emerald. How can I be sure that I am buying a natural emerald with accepted treatment? it seems like it’s much less expensive to purchase gemstone jewelry online and I see many sellers claim their stones are natural AAA quality, and will also give a certificate of authenticity. Is that enough to trust them?

If something seems too good to be true it most probably is. This is not to say that bargains don't exist, but, just a cautionary note, there are many unscrupulous sellers on the internet currently, many of them will lie to make a sale, these people are not selling their products at a loss. If what they are selling was valuable? They most likely wouldn't be selling their stock cheaply.

Not necessarily. Different methods and different companies will have different costs. If you are looking for a lab grown emerald with the closest characteristics to that of natural, from a reputable American company, Chatham is a great way to go. They are not the only ones, but I would expect to pay more for chatham. Some of the other companies, especially foreign, you don't know what process or ethics are involved. Hope that helps!

No-oil Muzos tend toward yellow. Right now, I would say they are the most sought after, but you probably see more than I do.

Hello, I acquired a vintage sterling silver ring with a square green stone in the center surrounded by silver also in the square shape... It looks just like an Emerald, and is still green under UV light... But it has a scratch on it. 😢 So, what else could it be?
