Mike, I need to hear you say you are not a CPA again before you tell these people what is and is not a write off. The tax code is not black and white by any means. I love that you take the time to help people understand how to work as efficient as possible and I respect it! But even your pay is determined by BS opaque algorithms and inconsistent pay structures. Therefore, every driver is responsible for every spec of their data which builds their specific annual income statements, cashflow statements, & balance sheets. And even gathering this data to then plug in and calculate takes more time than most people have ...oh and patience to understand is an uphill battle in itself. Gig workers are not covered under a # of state and/or federal employment & labor laws like employees are. However, they do have more flexibility with their taxes but the downside can be that with more power comes more responsibilities. I know you mean well in guiding fellow gig workers but maybe dive deeper into that area before handing out blunt tax advice then saying "now I'm not a CPA but typically" ...Not only is our current workforce climate changing rapidly, the gig economy and these platforms running it are not typical. Unions are typical. Paystubs that are transparent are typical. Consider it.

I live in a great area that has variety. That said, the fast $$ I get are the McDonald's orders that typically are 7- 12 dollar orders under 6 miles. I take them everytime. I'm right around $30 per hour. 1700- 2k per week, my goal is $ 300 per day so I work a 10 hour day. My wait time I do a ton of reading. I dropped corporate America and couldn't be happier. Best advice, take care of yourself ( eat right, and exercise) before you serve others. Lastly...it's just food. Don't stress about it. Have fun.

@@viajerozz I hear you, it's got to be the area you're in. The places I go to a very quik like chipotle always have the order ready to grab. Taco bell usually takes awhile because it's mainly drive thru with long wait times. I also work 12 hours days wed- Sunday starting at 7am. I shoot for $200 a day. My advice is don't be greedy with just expecting high paying orders, and find another side hustle if things get slow. I live in a smaller town (20k). Our next bigger town is 40 minutes to the NorthEast (100k). We have drivers that come SW to our smaller town cause it auto limits the order distance and simplifies the game. Sometimes I go NE cause they have much more order volume. Once you know how to calculate dollars per mile on an order, it makes the larger markets more lucrative in my experience.

Excellent video, Mike, as always. Your gig work videos are consistently the best on KZfaq. Shop & Deliver: Granted, I'm not an A+ shopper. In fact, I find it takes me 90 seconds on average to find the customer's product. Factor in drive time/distance to the store, drive time/distance to the customer, and non-shopping time (checkout lane waits, for example) and you can see that Shop & Deliver orders are rarely financially beneficial to accept. I'll only accept them now if a segment of my shift is slow and I want a change of pace (that is, a break from food pickup and delivery).

The $14.50 order you were talking about all depends on the delivery route and what restaurant I'm going to for me 7.6 miles. I always look at where I have to go. If there are more lights and busier traffic I wouldn't accept it. Not when I can decline that order and accept a 8-10 dollar order for 3-4 miles that I know I can get to quickly then accept another order for another 6-9 dollar one for 3-4 miles. The route of the order and the restaurant I'm going to is a priority for me. I know what restaurants are slow and fast pick ups. The quicker delivery is the best option in my opinion. I did a 11 mile delivery for 16 dollars. The restaurant was right off the freeway and the drop off was less than a mile off the freeway. Took 25 minutes from the time I accepted the order till I dropped it off. I was out today for 10 hours and made 239 dollars. That's about my average. I work 7 days a week.

Did that 11 mile drive take you to a different zone? Or did you drive that same 11 miles back down the highway to get back to your initial zone? Because from my understanding if I took that and decided to drive back down to wherever I picked up the order in the first place, then I’m basically wasting gas / working for free at that point unless I zone hopped into whatever the new zone is at drop off which is kind of a 50/50 chance that the new zone could suck balls.

@@ZachAtaxx that did take me out of my zone about 5 miles. . The trip to the house though was only. 10 mins. The other 15 was getting to the store and waiting. It took me about 10 mins to get back to my hotspot and received another order soon as I got back to my hotspot My point is that 35 mins I made 16 dollar's. My goal is 20-25 an hour. Just because you go out of your zone doesn't mean you shouldn't do them. Like I said quick routes are the best. My route coming back was the freeway. Where I can do 75 mph. Now if my route wasn't the freeway for that 11 mile trip. And it was taking me 5 miles out of my zone I wouldn't have accepted it. Don't see how you think you or I, for that matter worked for free just because you have to drive back to your zone. You are getting paid to deliver someone's order. I got paid 16 dollar's for 35 mins of work. Where I come from that's pretty good. Especially if it's only having to drive someone's order to them.

Thanks Mike! I really enjoy your videos! I dash in the southwest parts of Kansas City! One point that really stands out when watching so many DD videos is if I were to only accept dollar per mile orders totaling $1.75 per mile or more I would be declining 75% of the orders coming in. And I’m dashing in a well above average income area with large clusters of restaurants. We simply don’t have the population “density” that many other cities do. My acceptance rate with DD is currently 68% and runs up and down from 65-75%. I am currently working on an experiment about the Top Dasher program. I will be a TD after Feb. 2, 2022. I want to track any change in quality of orders and wait times getting orders. Thanks Mike again! Keep up the great videos! Dave

I do food deliveries for Doordash/Uber Eats/GrubHub around the Twin Cities in MN part time. I did some deliveries in Indianapolis as well around 2019-2020. I don't bother with any orders under 7-9 bucks. I also don't bother with any restaurants that make me wait more than 15 mins. I don't drive in areas that make me nervous or I dislike being in such as downtown. I'm a little rusty with my math. So I reject orders until I get a $7-9+ order that's about equal or more to the total miles I'd be driving. Between the two marketplaces I've delivered in, not only have most restaurants had the orders ready if not 2-3 minutes to wait but its much more busier in the Twin Cities. My best suggestion for sure that follows with your suggestions is know your marketplace and find areas that have the most orders in the apps you'll be delivering for.

Well one thing I learned real quick is if you see an order with a small payout on uber eats and you aren't going to take it just let the timer expire don't even bother hitting decline or the x button which ever one it is because if you try to hit the decline button it will accept the order instead. So, rule of thumb just let the timer expire on low payout orders and decline them that way.

i just started doing doordash in the pittsburgh area a few days ago and i'm still getting used to which orders to take. i think it all depends on how much you're willing to drive and like you said thinking about how much you'd be making an hour. another tip i wanna add is, if you're worried about getting lost because directions can be confusing, go straight to an area that you know before pressing dash now. if an order pops up on your screen while you're driving to the hotspot it could take you in a complete different direction and waste a bunch of time

Most deliveries here are 3 miles max. 4 days a week I travel to a larger area which tips better and has lots more orders. So I dash a couple days a week local and take those skinny orders (still over a buck per mile) which keeps my acceptance rate higher so that I can be more selective when I make my money runs to the larger area. I'll be at 82% or so and drop to 74%...then raise it back up in the small area.

98 items isn't that bad. Depends wildly but I would have taken that one. I could do it in 30ish minutes if the Walmart isn't slammed. Usually I help the kid load and I'm off. Especially if it's a house, I voice text the person where they would like me to leave their delivery so by the time I get to their (hopefully) house I can drop, ring and go. Around the 2pm-3pm lull I hangout at Walmart. I should say tho one time I got screwed and in those 8 bags of a 100 item order there was like 8 cases of bubbly water. My method seems to be working for me and it's simple. Absolutely under no circumstance take orders under 5$ , and take orders that will pay you .50 cents a minute. I've taken 12$ 0rders that is 12 miles and took me 45 minutes to an hour to complete and I've done 6.75 orders that took me 15 minutes to complete which made me a little over 22$ an hour which for me 20$ an hour is minimal.

One thing I hate is going to a Peak pay area where it says very busy. And then I only get like two orders per hour. I have sat more in this one peak pay zone near me than I have anywhere else. Normally it’s pretty much one order to another order without parking and waiting. But in this peak pay zone, I park and wait. I don’t see how it can be very busy and have me not get orders. It’s very strange. And I have tested this zone 10 times.

Great video - so you have pointed out these longer delivery "ending" times to see if the money/gas expense is worth the time - makes sense. But is there any way of adding an additional pickup/delivery during that time (on the way, etc) where you could have it alert you and now show the new total time for all deliveries - say your two delivery example which would take 40 min. to the end, now the app says, one hour total time. OR, is that time you showed of that 40 min. say, the "real" time it takes to drive there to pick up both?

I could get away with being picky in 2021 but so far it might just be the early months of the year I had to drop my standards. Now anything that is 1-1.25 a mile is good for me. So if it's 4 miles for 6 ill take it because things have gotten super slow in my area. Some places like MCD and other fast-food places I don't go to because of the drive-thru and no open lobbies for pickup. When it's super busy I can afford to cherry-pick but when it's slow gotta take the lower-paying orders to make money 5. Nothing below that tho for me. I had to adapt to the slowness of the market otherwise I would be making no money at all.

Anyone who is not riding off all of their mileage and omitting commuting miles when calculating their mileage right off is stupid! There is absolutely no way the IRS would ever be interested in auditing your tax return for those small nickels and dimes. They are interested in big fish that have multi hundred thousand dollar deductions that they are taking and trying to find the lie for a huge payout. That is efficiency in regards to the IRS. This coming from someone who has been self-employed for 14 years

I learned the hard way...I no longer accept ANY shop and deliver nor do I ever accept a Walmart order. Both will ruin your dollar per hour rate and Walmart is notorious in my area for taking 40 min or more for a single order pick up. Shop and Deliver are never high enough to make any sense. You actually will make more with Intacart or Shipt if you want to shop and deliver...a LOT more. But be careful with declining too many orders you will get dinged and a warning message from Doordash about your acceptance rate and they have kicked people off the app for falling below certain thresholds. Ive been at this gig driving thing for over 5 years. Almost 2 years with doordash.

Hey Mike. Question: If I am doing an order where I have to shop for the customers items (CVS or Walgreens), and the store doesn’t have an item on the shelf, I call and text the customer, wait 5 mins and don’t get a reply, should I substitute or issue refund? The only reason I ask is because the customer enters the tip amount before I start shopping so if I issue a refund for several items and the customer only gets 2 items out of 10 for example, they tipped a lot and didn’t get much. Hopefully I explained it well, thanks.
