So obviously I've seen lots of reactions to this scene from Forrest Gump. I honestly can't remember how I felt the first time I watched this scene (I saw this in the theater). Now when I watch it, I have complete sympathy for Jenny. But at the same time, if 80% of first time reactors are not fans of Jenny it makes me think that way back in 1994 when I was watching this for the first time I probably felt the same way.

Every father worth a damn is always worried their child will inherit the worst part of them. Sometimes its that thing we hide deep down within ourselves and as trivial as it sometimes might be, we see them as our personal defects and wish none of it upon others, especially the children we help bring into this life.

This scene always hurts. Turns out Forrest has been aware of his condition and how he’s “different” from other people. Last thing he would want is his offspring to have the same and have to face the same trials and hardship he has endured growing up.

I watched this movie when i was 13 years old and i fully understood Jenny had intimacy issues because of being sexually abused. That’s why she’s always running. It’s so obvious I don’t know how anyone could miss that.

Yes it's really sad, but it's understandable because the film is from Forrest's point of view, not Jenny's... People sometimes need to be shown the obvious. otherwise biases come into play. Most people who act inappropriately do so for reasons related to their upbringing, their life history. In a society where we learn that it is only choice and personal merit that do everything, this way of seeing things remains in the minority.

When it comes to Jenny not telling Forrest she had to clean herself up but everybody misses that's Jenny in the restaurant looking at the TV when Forrest is running so Forrest was running cross-country for 3 years & she couldn't contact him & let him know

I love how this younger generation are always perplexed that Jenny didn't contact Forrest about his son earlier. I really believe that can't comprehend a world without instant communication. We are talking about 1981 and a great use of Reagan's assassination attempt to pin the time down. Cell phones didn't exist and trying to contact Forrest while he was running would be next to impossible

God!!! Watching this movie brings bac so many memories like when Reagan was shot i was only 7 but that was the only thing on T.V. for like a week. The AIDS critics it was so bad that people were believing that every one was going to die from AIDS. I remember going to see this movie on opening day. I originally planed to see it once it came out on video. But my fiancée and I got home from work and she had been wanting to see it on opening day so we end up going to the last show of the night. When the reveal played and Hailey Joel Osment appeared on screan I knew what was comming. I immediately turned to my fiancée to watch her reaction. It was priceless tears roll down her cheeks she then proceeded to wrap herself around me and cryed through the rest of the movie.😢😢😢😢

It pains me how many reactors seemed to not understand how Jenny was a victim of child abuse, and just how much that abuse DAMAGED her on a deep, psychological level.

Not only that but with Forrest's situation you can't help but wonder if the reason she ran away so many times is because for a long time she never considered him to be an age peer, meaning that her feelings for him made her think she was like her father. She might have felt like she was molesting him just as her father did to her.

...and many in this comments section are equally determined to prove their ignorance about (a) psychological trauma created by sexual abuse & (b) just how different communication was in the era before mobile phones & the internet. These reaction mashups are great. Should do one for, "It's a Wonderful Life." The scene of George's monologue after his dad's death. The end scene would also be awesome, but a spoiler too. This would be a great one for 🎄 the hollidays. Another great mashup would be "Field of Dreams,' the scene when the daughter falls and loses consciousness, and the end when the dad is revealed.

One thing I've always hated when watching reactions to this movie is how many people hate and don't understand Jenny. She was abused as a child didn't think any1 could love her and couldn't love herself. Then hearing everyone say why did she wait so long go tell him about little forest...well he was running for over 3 years there were no cell phones so she couldn't contact him.

Technically false on the cell phone bit. The first cell phone was back in 1973 called the DynaTAC 8000X. However, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say while they did exist, they were 1. Bulky like a brick so you couldn't really carry them around, 2. Weren't as mainstream at the time as they were still kind of a new thing, and 3. Pretty expensive because the DynaTAC 8000X, when it was first introduced, was $3,995(about $10,000 today).

Her personal trauma accounts for a lot of her behavior but it doesn’t absolve a lot of it. It’s perfectly understandable to hate Jenny because she did some heinous things. He took off running right after she left and ran for like 3 and a half years. Little Forrest is in kindergarten which puts him around 5 so she had 2 to 3 years to get a hold of him and let him know he had a child. It’s inexcusable. Regardless of her past, she has agency and was never held accountable for any of her actions. She’s easily hateable.

@@gregall2178 you don’t have to be high and mighty to not be a complete piece of garbage. Everyone has stories and issues, pretending that it absolves them of wrongdoing is childish. I guess we shouldn’t hate anyone because something in their life lead them where they are. You look at anyones life you can follow the trail of breadcrumbs to try and rationalize their actions, it doesn’t make them less of a piece of crap.

I think the main reason she let Forrest know about his son is that she knew she was sick and might die, and she was making provision for their son. I wonder though, If she wasn't sick would she have ever told him?

I remember James Lipton saying his favorite line was Forrest asking if his son was smart or like himself, signifying that Forest had never truly been unaware that he was different. He knew people spoke to him in a different way, like his mama and Jenny; and while being unable to do anything about it he knew.

I've only been pleasantly surprised a couple of times by young reactors who *don't* hate on Jenny. When Jenny meets Forrest after she's been through some stuff, younger viewers can't relate to that. Not even the oldest Zoomers/Millennials are into their mid-life crises yet, so they're still callous when it comes to people like Jenny. They'll come around after they've had some hardships. Incidentally, when the Zoomers start to go through their mid-life crises, buckle up. Millions of people suddenly unsure of who they are, and they have access to social media? It's going to be insaaaaaaane. 90% of the phases that they're going through will be long dead and over, and they're going to have to rebuild their identities from scratch. Gonna be hilarious.

Wait, wait, wait, wait... I have to go back, because I refuse to believe I heard something so utterly ignorant... Okay, I had hoped that I simply misheard, but sadly no. "Why didn't she tell him" 😵🤯 This is a prime example of watching but paying attention to jackshit about any information the movie is giving the audience, it's litteraly "we're watching, but we don't give a shit about what's happening on screen. And this" first time watch" thing is BS. But hey, that's just me, and no, it's not all reaction channels, but it is the vast majority.

Forrest was such a good guy. Even today, he would be friend zoned so fast. I was 16 when this came out and saw it in the theater twice. To this day I can’t stand Jenny. People Can make excuses for her all they want but….

I don’t get the hate Jenny gets. People are willing to accept Forrest but not Jenny who was abused physically, mentally, and sexually for who knows how long by her alcoholic dad as a child. She was then separated from her younger sister to go live with her grandma who was living in a tiny caravan. She was also without her mother. Another trauma there, I’m sure. All the trauma she experienced limited her own healthy development. Of course she’s not going to feel worthy of unconditional love. She never felt good enough for Forrest. It probably made her very anxious to be with someone who didn’t want anything more from her than her own happiness. She probably felt like she would be taking advantage of Forrest. Jenny’s self sabotaging is a very VERY common reaction for someone with her traumas. She genuinely loved Forrest. She was just so very traumatised and didn’t know how to have a healthy relationship. I wish people would be more understanding of Jenny.

I think the nasty criticism of Jenny comes from ignorance and sexism. Many people expect Jenny to just "get over" all her father's abuse and be a "good girl". Those people are just ignorant of the psychological damage such abuse can do to a child - girl or boy. The character of Jenny was often criticized by conservative Christian groups, which is not a surprise, as those groups are patriarchal. They expect women and girls to submit to whatever their fathers and husbands do to them. They're not supposed to be free-spirited and promiscuous. They're expected to be "good girls".

The movie makes Jenny look so bad and paints Forrest as the lovestruck victim. That's the complete opposite of the book. Jenny wants him. He bails on her. And his mother is awful in the book.

Didn't you see the head tilt? He's definitely the father, and even if he wasn't, giving him a son and a part of her that would live on after she died would have been the best gift she could have possibly given him.

@@yusufraage8554 You don't think a guy who spent several years running across the country cuz his life felt empty wouldn't love having a child to care for? Also, why would Jenny need to lie? The reason people manage to watch this movie and hate her despite her so obviously having perfectly valid reasons for being a mess is because Forest Gump is basically a golden retriever in human form, who's so utterly kind and good that he'd do anything for a friend without hesitation. If Jenny had asked him to adopt her son, Forest would have done so in a heartbeat, so IF she lied about him being the father she did so for his sake, not her son's.

That's messed up... Jenny knows damn well that ain't his kid...and that he ain't smart enough to figure it out.. Or any way to prove otherwise even if he were... DNA was still in it's infancy at the time a certainty not available for the public to test paternity... Played him like a drum her whole life then does this at the end ...? She cold as Hell...!
