Is it a hobby, or a consumerist addiction? Where's the 'hobby' part, really? Not judging, but we really like to stretch the definition of 'hobby' these days.
@LiveLifeLarge851
@LiveLifeLarge851 Жыл бұрын
@@wintermute8315 I think it's an addiction if you go around compulsively buying watches on a whim, without any research or consideration as to how they fit into your lifestyle and collection. Most hobbies require you to spend money on equipment, so this is really no different. It's a hobby if you spend time researching different brands, brand history, models, movements, etc. It's a hobby if you educate yourself by watching this very informative and entertaining channel and others of the many good ones out there. It's a hobby if you go to watch shows, check in with ADs, etc. I like that he has an outer limit of the number of watches he is comfortable owning (or his wife will let him purchase) and that he modifies his collection around that limit. I have no problem calling this a hobby. It's certainly is one of mine.

I've found that the best way to separate from something is to box it up and put it out of sight. Most times, I never think about it. And if, after a few weeks, I don't really notice it's gone, I know I can sell it without regret. I do this with records, books, watches, and other things I find myself collecting and attaching too much sentimental value to. There are still some things I can't part with-the watches my wife gave me as gifts, rare records that I was obsessed with before they were rare-but I've almost never regretted parting with the things I put through that little separation period (parenting tip: it's the same way I quietly move things out of my kid's room. If he actually notices it's gone, I go get it, but if it doesn't come up after 6 weeks, we pas it on to someone else).

This is EXACTLY why I’m in the midst of selling & reducing my collection down to 4-6 pieces and calling it a day. Once I got to 10 I had that “oh 😐” moment when I realized this wasn’t going to stop and then it would get ridiculous. So, I’m keeping only the ones that are already imbued with memory, then focusing on purchasing a few “grail” watches (I hate that phrase, but…..) that will take some time to acquire and from there just enjoying what I have whilst continuing to consume unhealthy amounts of KZfaq watch review vids. Good a plan as any😏

I feel you! My collection is full up as well. I already have 2 full boxes and a handful of watches accumulating outside the boxes. No room, and no room in the budget. Sadly, there are still watches I would love to add to the collection, but then I will have to look at myself in the mirror and acknowledge that I have way more money tied up in watches than any sensible human being should. I know some are going to have to find new homes this year, but it really is hard once you've been collecting for awhile to drop the axe on one. In the first 5 years it was easy. I actually had watches that came into the collection and stayed briefly before I realized that I actually (literally) hated them. I cheered the day they went to a new home. Anyway, thumbs up for the B&R Diver! I have 2 of them, a black dial and a limited edition orange. The quirky square case fits nicely in a dive watch and I do truly enjoy strapping them on the wrist, even if there is an SD43 sitting beside them.

Dear Youre, Your watch taste is idiosyncratic. You seem to be indifferent from the loud popular opinions that many watch channels tout and I respect that. Watches or any hobby is individual and in the pursuit of enjoying one’s self, the voice which matters most is your own. Where other channels had me disturbed about taking my 50m watches out in the rain or the numerous benefits of quartz, you’re channel influenced me to look at watches with a more open mind. For example, your indifference with the hype train of the Speedy served not to validate my purchase like most other opinions out there, but it made me think deeper about why I personally enjoy it. You look inward and it inspires others to look inward as well, that is why I believe people care what watches you choose to keep.

I can absolutely relate Evan. I gifted my PAM111 to my best friend. And even though I know he loves the watch he worships it too much. He doesn't wear it so much what I expected he would do. And that bugs me. And every time I meet him and he doesn't wear the watch I get upset and want it back. I know it's in good hands but... ahh! Besides that I sold a few pieces that I really regret selling in the past. E.g. the Montblanc Heritage Chronometrie Ultra Slim 38mm. Such a beautiful watch for such an affordable price back than. But hey, that's all part of the hobby. I do own 30 pieces at the moment, counting the 7 Seikos but not counting my 9 Casio's. I only count mechanical pieces. Yeah I already crossed that line to say I still do 'only' own 30 watches. I need to go now. Need to see my doctor. Thanks. Bye.

That is the trouble with a settled collection. My ethos is to have a balanced collection. Over the years this has looked different as i've sold watches and bought others. It feels weird as that puts previous darlings on the chopping block. But the watches i wear most often are worn most often for a reason. So i separate ones i might sell from the collection and keep those out of sight and out of mind to test the waters and make sure i'm okay with it and to lessen any connection. The trouble is the reasons you bought them and like them still exist. But them being sold or given away frees up money to explore other watches with and the opportunity to balance your collection in a new way. i.e. i'd like a doxa but not until i sell this seiko so i don't have too many dive watches that would fill the same role functionally and sartorially.

I get the imprinting part, but for me- the day I got the call for a Rolex two tone GMT is the day a loved one died from a heart attack shortly after bringing it home. And to this day bringing home a new watch comes with a certain low level pang of anxiety, for this already high strung watch person. 😢

I think it's just that your viewers get to live life through you, enjoying your watch journey. Potentially they can't afford some of these or aren't in a position to buy a new watch so they enjoy collecting through your eyes. Hence why some viewers might express anger or disappointment at times. Think of it like a dad pushing his kid into a pro sports career so he can live though them as perhaps he never got the chance, that's maybe what some viewers are like. Me I just like the content and the journey and as I'm probably only ever going to own one luxury watch (Tudor for example) I like seeing what's on your wrist next.

yes, the price development! That is what has been keeping me from selling as I know I will never get them back if I regret it. My biggest regret so far: selling a 1966 Omega Seamaster Chrono Panda dial with the cal 321. Reason: it came back from a full service and looked so perfect I couldn't bring myself to wear it. Well. Now 'm just trying watches out that I find interesting.We already know how different watches are in real life compared to seeing them online. Wearing them is yet different. And getting your grail watch is, too. Interesting experiences. It's all a journey.

You should try a Big Pilot, maybe even one from the original reference, the 5002. I think it would fit you. Great video as always :)

I am proud and anxious of myself delaying purchase of Tudor 1926 in 36mm white dial. Little scared that they are going discontinue it like white OP39 or blue OP36 369 but not willing to buy it that soon after GS.

I wonder if you can answer this: what is your biggest selling regret? Not maybe from a monetary standpoint (thought it would make sense), but a watch you sold that you still regret selling and can see being added back.

I can feel you man. My Seiko collection is more or less complete. I don't like the new designs and I own (almost) every vintage ref. I can think of. I'd like to branch out to other brands, but 25 watches is enough.

I don’t care what watches you own or what you do with them. I care what you say about watches, and why. But let me tell you this: In the 6 years since I caught this bug I’ve bought and sold a lot of watches and a lot of them quite expensive. I have few regrets, but one regret I do have is that I bought too many watches based on logic and reason rather than feeling.. and also that I felt that I had to sell before I bought a new one even though I could afford it. That has caused me to get rid of watches before I was 100% certain that I was done with with them. So.. don’t worry so much, if you can’t afford new watches because you have too much invested in your collection? Then wait until you have the funds. If you can afford more watches but feel bad about expanding the collection? I say buy first, sell later. If you want to, otherwise just keep your watches and be happy. Thanks for the content, I appreciate it.

I'd keep the TAG for summer funky times, the PAM, the tank, the GS, the rollies, and the seiko GMT..... About that Grand Seiko though, why did you go for that particular model if I may ask ? I am currently big time looking at GSs and I like them all...

The only one Id say never to get rid of is the Tag. Theres a Seiko in my collection that isn't anything Special but its the only watch my parents ever gitted me so its staying. If I'm homeless its staying on one wrist and an affordable solar gshock/protrek is staying on the other.

An easy way to make room for more new watches would be instituting subscriber watch giveaways 🤔.
