We just want to make clear that this is the last video in a detailed Guitar Maintenance course, which you can find here: www.yourguitaracademy.com/courses/james-collins In this video we simply challenge James to attempt a full set up in just 15 minutes... We are not saying it is by any means the perfect set up! Check out the full course if you want to do a perfect set up :) :)

I like to set-up my own guitar and basses. But every year, I take them to my old luthier friend. He looks at them, looks me in the eye and says, "If you watch, 100% extra, if you help, 200% extra, if you tell me how to do my job, 500% extra." A few days later, my instruments are better than new and setup just as I like them. We often have a few ouzos together as he is an older Greek gentleman. The kindest thing he said to me was, "You are an idiot, but you play OK." I have been going to him for many years.

Handy tip! If you don't have a feeler gauge for checking neck relief, on a Gibson les Paul, hold 1st and 15th fret on high E , on the 7th fret the distance between the bottom of the string and top of the fret should be no more than the thickness of your high E string 👍

This gentleman will get a 15 minute setup and spend the evening's gig pulling small pieces of wire out of his fingers and off of his P-90’s. No need to use steel wool in basic daily cleaning. I’ve played for 50 years and have relied on the Jim Dunlop Cleaning System to maintain the entire guitar. Fretboard care, Cleaning and polishing the body. No residue, no harsh chemicals. The Formula 65 Care Products can be purchased individually or as an entire system.

Everything seems straightforward in this video. I'm just unsure where I should start my bridge height at. I've taken my saddle and pins off the guitar and have no idea to what it was set to before. I understand how to change the relief, set the action and intinate. Again, is there a measurement off the body or bridge humbucker ring that can get me close? Then I can adjust my action accordingly? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

I always wondered why guys with Les Pauls always have their tailpiece so high? I never have mine like that. I always make sure there’s a good string break angle to help tuning stability. And my Les Pauls hold tune almost as good as my Floyd equipped guitars. Those never go out of tune. But then again, I have the TP6 tailpieces on most of my Les Pauls. I like them so much I put an imperial “made in USA” Gibson TP6 on my metric spec’d ESP Eclipse. Took a little ingenuity, but that guitar never goes out of tune either. Having the fine tuners on the TP6 is awesome too. I bought them initially because I have a lot of Floyd guitars. I got used to tuning at the bridge. But it turns out they are killer for tuning stability too. And dialing in perfect pitch. 👊🏻

So I'm doing my own fret job and setup for the first time. All taught via KZfaq videos. That's right! I'm leveling, crowning, and polishing my frets and then doing a standard setup on my Epiphone Les Paul SpecIal II. Let me tell you! These frets have the best mirror shine they didn't have from the factory. I have a question. I know that to continue, I must restring, set the action, adjust the radius of the bridge and adjust the releif of the neck. What I don't know is after I put the strings on, what's next? Relief, then action? Or action, then relief? Or what?
@stringkingworks
@stringkingworks 5 жыл бұрын
There's obviously a lot of ways to do things and diffrerent techs will do different things, but a couple of things.... Always put some masking tape on your pickups before you use wire wool on the neck. If you don't you will get pieces of it stuck to the pickups. I prefer to use just the cleaners and sometimes a credit card to scrape off dirt. The other thing is, there is no neck relief that is good for every neck. 8 thou is a good benchmark but you can go lower if the player doesn't hit the strings hard and maybe higher if they are doing Townsend windmills. It also depends on the guitar. Sometimes they will even go down to 3 thou. Pluck the low E string to see if you have buzz and if you do, you need more relief (and vice versa)

@@yga that's why I feel setup should be $40 for what was done here. Any parts being replaced is extra even if it took 30 minutes that's 80 an hour.. also dont understand why so many shops have 1 to 2 day wait times if not longer on setups
@ryang1244
@ryang1244 6 жыл бұрын
hahaha So it should be cheaper but you also don't understand why so many shops have a 1-2 day turnaround? Perhaps it's because the price they charge is fair and they are clearly busy. It's simple economics. Also the amount of time a job like this takes is not relevant, you're paying for the result and the experience of the person doing it. If they are good at their job and people think the price is fair, they get more business and can charge more.

Highly diluted degreaser on a damp microfiber(damp not wet). Don't listen to douchebag Lynn. He/She(who knows) is trying to have you wreck your guitar because he/she has nothing better going on in life.....

@spekkio101
@spekkio101 5 жыл бұрын
Probably not necessary. If this is his main gigging guitar and not a new one, he probably has the pickups set to the height he likes already. Since they're going to set up his action to his preferred height, then there's no reason to reset the pickups as the distance shouldn't have changed.

Im having a peculiar potentiometer problem.. depending how tight I have the volume pot attached to the pickguard it will work fine but only if its barely hand tight. If I loosen/tighten more it cuts out and gives a weak output or none at all. Ive tried replacing both pots and pups. Any ideas?
