I joined the army at 17. The first night in the woods the drill sergeant's snuck into the our tents and took our weapons. Those of us who kept our weapon by sticking them in our sleep bag were rewarded. We didn't had to lay on the ground with legs and arms in air yelling I'm a dead cockroach.

Cockroaches are rough. I was in a disciplinary bootcamp as a teen ran by a Marine Sgt in Brewster, MA for being a troubled kid. (last chance before jail) It was all the P.T., ruck marches with 60lb packs, and obstacle (team building) courses without any of the fun stuff haha. We had to spend the entire 60 days outdoors carrying everything we needed with us (aside from 2 days that we got to stay indoors and shower) Straightened me out quick haha.

While stationed in Sicily a fellow sailor was training for the Seals. He would run 20 miles to work with a 50 lb pack on and then run home at the end of his 24 hour shift. He went to training and quit. I talked to him a fwe years later and he said the physical part was easy for him, but the mental part tore him apart.

Yes you sign a waiver, when you sign the dotted line and agree to be a US soldier, airman, sailor, or marine, you sign your life away, you are signing a contract that you understand that your duties will carry a high degree of injury or death and that you are ok with it and you accept all the risks. I had to sign one of those “waivers” when I joined the US Air Force.

I enlisted into the Navy after trying Junior College. Lucky enough to become an IS2 (intelligence specialist). Met my husband while in the reserves. He did anti submarine warfare. Then our oldest son enlisted in the Navy, he was a Nuke Machinist Mate 1st class. He served in the USS Alabama #731. Our second son enlisted in the Navy too. He was a Damage Control, DC3rd class on the USS Debuque. So, we’re are very proud of our family. My husband’s niece is Vet in the Army, she took care of several SEAL teams dogs. Deaths during Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) (the formal name for the program) training are incredibly rare. There have only been 10 since 1953. However, broken bones and other injuries are relatively common. Full disclosure, I am not a SEAL, but I know and have worked with several. The training is absolutely brutal and BUD/S is only the beginning. There’s jump school (where Tadpoles (SEAL trainees) learn to skydive, SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape) training, SQT (SEAL Qualification Training), etc, before they even get their “Budweiser” (SEAL Trident). From there they go to specialty schools and join a Team where they are very much the new guy and have much more learning to do as they prove their worth to the Team and each other. It takes years to get that far and it is why SEALs are so protective of their status.
@mycroft16

Also why they are so insanely good. Thousands of hours of training, learning, repetition, training under fire, training in brutal conditions, more learning, more repetition, etc, etc, etc, until all of this becomes reflex. You don't think, you know and you act. As a unit, as a team. It's damned impressive.

My buddy went through Hell Week, but said the pool part, where the Instructors took apart his gear and even tied it in a knot, lol was the hardest to get through. He also told me that even after he finished, he still had to wait until his peers gave him the go ahead to get his Trident. He had to go through Paratrooper training and Ordinance training and a few years of training with his peers. The SEALS are truly elite. Amazing soldiers and as an American, I am very proud of him and lucky to have these guys on our side.

Served as a SEAL for 32 yrs. Know what’s harder than SEAL training? Watching your kid go through it. Of note: I was a 22-yr-old completing a year working in NZ on 1yr work abroad program in 1982. I bought a Morrison Monarch “push bike” and rode through both islands. While cycling south through days of rain on the West Coast of the South Island I stopped at a farm and asked the “cocky” (owner) if I could lay out my sleeping bag and tarp in his barn to dry my gear for a night. He said yes and brought out dinner. We talked for a few hours. His name was Hec Berrington (or something close) and told me about his serving in WWII as an ANZAC LT leading a group of 10 Fijians. (Kiwis were some of the original special operations forces in Africa and the Pacific.) Hec was one of the inspirations that helped me decide to become a SEAL. I’ve been back to New Zealand four times since then to race in the Southern Traverse of New Zealand, the Tour Aotearoa self-supported MTB race, and to just have a fun adventure, kayaking, cycling, and hiking with my wife. Check out the movie “Act of Valor” as a family.

I saw a video yesterday with a retired SEAL, and he said it can take you easily 3 years before you are an official Seal. The other SEALs in your team are the ones that decide if you get the Trident pin, not the commanders. Like this video said, you can go years with training, and it can take one of the members to say no, and you are done. There should be videos of BUDs SEAL bootcamp with hell week on KZfaq if you want to see if first hand. It's brutal.

I knew a seal. He had been in Viet Nam. He seldom talked about what he did. Once he told me of a mission. He was sent to secure a bridge. He went up river for three days - moving at night and hiding in the riverside brush in the day. He told of reaching the bridge. There were 4 Viet Cong garding the bridge - one at each corner. Each of them had an automatic rifle. Nothing about what happened. He said, "Do you know what the most beautiful sight in the world is? It's an American convoy crossing a secured bridge." I know nothing of how he did it. One against 4. Stealth being his only security. The American elite are awesome. He was such a gentle and calm person who had performed at the top of aggression.

My husband was in the navy and was transferred to work with the Seals on amphibious landings. He was to be the guy who drove the boat to shore to offload the Seals (in the frigid waters). Before he could start, he too had to pass some tests, one of which was a swim test. He didn't know how to swim even though he was born on an island. He had so little body fat, he couldn't float, so when he'd try to swim, he'd sink. A Seal noticed his many attempts to swim and told him to avoid sinking, once in the water, just keep moving his arms and kicking his feet. He'd basically skim the surface of the water. The change in technique allowed him to pass the swim test. He then was allowed to complete his training (driving the amphibious landing craft) and working with the Seal trainees.

@barbaraeverly1922 Жыл бұрын
@@1BobsYourUncle he was in the navy and therefore was always required to wear a life preserver vest in specific situations. Also it's a well know fact that oceanic waters are very cold and chances are you'll cramp up and drown in cold oceanic waters before the ship first knows you went overboard or you'll die of hyperthermia (or attacked by sharks) before you are rescued. If you're in a life boat if the ship is damaged to the point there's a chance it'll sink, you're in a circumstance where you're wearing a vest. No need to know how to swim, if it's not part of your job duties. BTW, he went thru training at Great Lakes Recruiting Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois and worked with the Seals at Naval Base Coronado located in Coronado, California, both near very cold water.

There was one former Seal that was an instructor that talked about what happened in the pool phase one time. It was to see who could get the job done and for those that could not get the task done to see how far they would push themselves to complete the task. This one kid had been really trying to complete the task but was not able to do it all. On his last try he stayed down so long he passed out and I think he said the guy died. They were able to bring him back. And all this guy wanted to know is if he completed the task.

Hey NZ family, enjoying your channel from Florida. USAF veteran. Knowing a seal what I understand is the seal training is the toughest. However, Army Green Baret , Marine Delta force , Air Force Spec.Ops, and British SAS, are all extremely tough training too. All these people deserve our highest respect. Search for some actual videos of the seal training for your own viewing, cartoons don’t really cut it for the severity of it. Keep up the great videos. Sorry if I get a bit long winded here, but just want to share some travel tips I learned the hard way. Hope you will enjoy your USA trip when it happens. Make a list of places you want to go. Check the distance/time between points A&B. Remember how big it is here. Don’t try to drive too far and waste your limited time here. Check the costs of what you want to visit-AND! Check the open/closed times and days of were you want to go. Make a good travel plan of what you really want to see. Wait a few days, discus it , then look at the plans again! 🤔And again 🙃! Have an extra stash of $ for the unexpected. Good luck 🍀 happy vacation! Oh,one last thought,when our relatives visit from the UK, they sometimes ask me to take them to the gun range since they can’t at home.Just a different experience to help understand some people’s opinions🤷🏼‍♂️And fun too!

I had a Navy Seal and a Recon Ranger in my family, they both served in Vietnam. And great uncles that served in the Army and Navy during World War ll. I was in and out of the Persian Gulf for 3 yrs before Desert Storm. My enlistment was over 3 weeks before the war started.

Watching Atlanta grow from a naive girl with wonderful parents, into an intelligent young woman who is so graceful, reassures me her brother will be brave and courageous. Those two are outlines of clever, it often makes me wonder how powerful sibling bonds and rivalry are or how it makes people stronger. I say that as the eldest, thinking of my own sister. We are very different and often at odds with one another, yet the trust and respect we shared growing up endured as we aged with dignity for the love we commonly held toward family. God bless you all.

As a general comment, the US military is the best due to the incredible training they receive. And they train so that when you're having the worst possible day of your life you can still do your job without thinking about it. I once knew a guy (since deceased) who was about 80 and had severe Parkinson's disease. He could no longer even sign his name, but one day we were talking about his time as an engineer on a C-119 and he went through the entire engine start-up procedure check list, step by step, like he was still a 20-year old airman. He remembered his training even after he'd lost almost everything else. Similarly, my father lived to be 100 and was a Lt. in the Navy during WWII. I guarantee you he could have stepped back into the engine room of his heavy cruiser and operated it without hesitation like it was 1943. I've met other WWII vets with similar abilities. That's the real key to military success because things will go wrong, they'll turn to sh*t in a hurry, but your training will get you through when other people would be losing their minds and becoming non-functional. The SEALS, of course, are at the very pinnacle and that's why they do the "impossible" on a regular basis. They'll show up, accomplish their mission, and be gone before you can say "Thank you for saving my life."

I watched a video that was a behind the scenes look at the Seal training, this was a few years ago. If you and your team drop your log, that’s ok the Navy still has you covered. You get to do some exercises with a special bigger log. This log is basically the size of the telephone poles you see around the country and is affectionately called Ma Bell. After some time with Ma Bell you then get to go pick up your much smaller log again.

Im a Navy brat. I was born at Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Base (the Navy and Marines are related to each other). Jet noise is in my DNA. I think kids that are raised in the military are a different breed than your average "civi" kid. My dad worked around explosives, but he was friends with Seals and Recon guys. I remember my mom yelling at my dad and his friends to move their homemade fireworks to the garage because dinner is ready. lol. Yeah, not your normal childhood. Also, because my dad was Navy, he wasnt quite as crazy as Marine dads. But.. me and my sister still had to get up every morning at 4:45am to go run on the beach with dad before school. He always said if he can do it, then us kids should have no problem. It actually paid off in middle school when they make you run the mile in Physical Fitness class. After running on a beach every morning, half asleep, for the first 12 years of my life, this stupid little 1/4 mile oval track on smooth dirt is a walk in the park. I know a lot of military kids had problems and difficulty living that lifestyle. It isnt for everyone. But I have very fond memories of my childhood. I wouldn't change any part of it.

The most important variable to consider in becoming a SEAL is whether or not it's peacetime. If you're at war, you get all the best missions. If we're at peace, your deployments are just being stuck on a cramped, boring Navy ship performing training exercises all the time with nothing to actually do. At least during combat, you get to use all the latest technology and weapons systems to give you the advantage over the enemy. SEALs rarely ever get killed in combat. It's mind-blowing how much higher the survival rate is in the SEAL teams versus the rate of regular infantry, despite being sent on the more dangerous missions. Regular infantrymen performing mundane, occupational duties of standing watch or working checkpoints will get killed at a much higher rate than a SEAL who'll be dropped into an active war zone pursuing the highest value targets. The US govt invests so much time and money into training you that they give you all the best weapons and kit to keep you alive. It typically requires something highly unexpected and totally random for a SEAL to be killed in combat.

A friend in OCS threw out a cigarette butt in front of the barracks. Drill Sergeant told him that butt needed a proper burial. Made him dig a 6x6 grave for the poor cigarette butt. Not long after he was finished with the grave, DS told him the butt was facing the wrong way and made him dig it up and re-bury it properly.

The kicker? If you graduate BUDs school you still are not a SEAL. Then you have paratroop training school to go through. You still have special operational duty school to go through. That is where you learn a specialization such as demolitions, medical, sniper or other team specializations. After that you are assigned to a team to see if you will fit with that team and if they accept you. If you do not fit with that team you are assigned to another. Only after being accepted into a team by the standing team members are you given the Trident and are officially a SEAL.

There are 2 groups in the US military that are considered more prestigious than a standard Seal. Those on Seal Team 6, and the members of Delta Force. Delta Force is a group that recruits out of all the military’s specials forces. It’s very secretive.

I wanted this so bad when i was in my early 20's, i worked out religiously, went a week without sleeping, took so many cold showers and practiced whim hofs breathing method. tried to prepare myself the best i possibly could, and i was honest with the recruiter. I told him i had been diagnosed with add (this is when they first changed it to allow it in) he asked if I'd ever been prescribed medication and i told him yes but it was 4+years ago and he said i needed a waver from my dr. Who had closed down his office a year or so before hand, i told him as much and he just said "sorry, i can't take you." That was 15+ years ago and still one of the biggest regrets of my life was being honest, and an empty feeling in my gut like i missed out on something great. I went airforce, and although I took pride in my job helping to get the jets off the ground and loved it, I'd never not look back on my missed chance.

My dad told me about a time when he was on base and going to get breakfast. A loud horn sounded and the entire line took two large steps back from the counter and only seconds later 20 navy seals came sprinting into the room, running down the counter and grabbing what they can and eating it on the run. They ended up sprinting out of a door on the other side of the hall, all in all the entire thing last 10 to 15 seconds. Those guys are tough and constantly on the move.

Happy New Year!!! Love your videos! Although I was Air Force, I do not think sailors dying during Seal hell week is of the norm. I think it's very rare. Training is brutal. I can honestly say, though, once they become a Seal, it changes because they are sent on some of the most dangerous missions ever. Some will debate this, but Seal training is harder than Army Green Beret (which is also very brutal) . I love that you are so respectful to Americans. I would love to hear about some of your traditions. Atlanta and Denzel are so well behaved and great kids. It all reflects on the parents. Great job! Also, Sam, I don't know why I just noticed, but what do the Roman numerals on your arm represent? Can't wait until the next video!!!

So many go into the military/law enforcement/firefighting and do not realize it is not just physical ability/fitness that determines how ready one is to survive anything. A LOT has to do with mental ability, and emotional ability. How to draw on past challenges/experiences for the present, knowing your mental/emotional weaknesses and strengths, and knowing the coping methods your body/brain find most useful. One learns very quickly that the tools of their trade should be treated like a sacred gift to never be let out of your grasp/sight for very long.

Y’all should watch the underwater competency tests. One of the tests, the cadets must swim across an Olympic length pool, and swim back without pushing off the wall, and without taking a single breath. Additionally, a scuba diver swims above them so that even if they wanted to take a breath, the diver will hold them under water until they lose consciousness, only then will they be taken out of the pool and resuscitated.

A good friend of mine that I met in 1985 did 2 tours in Vietnam as a SEAL. By far the baddest man I've ever known. I worked with him for several years as his only employee doing flooring, ceramic tile, carpet, fixing cars, plumbing, etc.. He would often expect me to be able to keep up with him and his insane schedules as well as doing the same amount of physically lifting and moving stuff. There's no way! I once saw him pick up a cast iron V8 engine (with the heads on it) and carry it about 50 feet to set it on a trailer that was waist height, and he wasn't even straining. He's slowed down a bit now, but he is still a badass. I'm glad he's my friend.

My dad went through SEAL training at the top of his class and at the end of it wasn't accepted because in reviewing his medical history they saw he had broken his knee when he was 10. They couldnt take a risk that the old injury might one day be a weakness, despite having passed all the physical requirements. 20 years later he did require extensive knee surgery, so there is certainly a reason for the stringency.
