Tylae in her TEDx Doncaster Talk shares the idea that Traditional Youth Services in the United Kingdom are and informal education is much more than just buildings, social hubs and places for young people to develop their basic social skills.
Just scratching the surface, these spaces offer opportunities for those pressured by inequality, safe spaces for Gay, Trans and Black young people, detached work to help young people on the streets, a place to celebrate and learn more about ones self, culture and identity.
Tylae is a living breathing example that Youth work, works, however after significant budget cuts Tylae presents how our sector needs to recover, and move forward, after over 10 years of ‘big society, NCS and Neo-liberalist mindsets taking over the agenda to support service for young people.
Tylae focuses on how to support, protect and raise the voices of young people and challenge the current landscape that is being exploited at the hands of the so-called big society organisations and the National Citizen Service.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organised by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx I’m Doncaster “born and bred” with a fire in my belly to create positive change within our society. I was let down by my personal experience with education and children's mental health services growing up but found my own identity through youth work.
I was given the space and opportunity to explore myself and my culture. Youth work made me who I am today, a Youth Work and Community Development graduate from the University of Derby, currently furthering his studies in a Master of Arts in Education: Leadership and Management course. What a strong message. When I was a kid, my mum used to support youths where we grew up at a centre in SE London. Sadly it got closed down - your message is such a strong call to action for us to step up for young people again - thank you Tylae.

Your story rings true in every town and city up and down the country. We need to step up, ‘if not us, if not now then when’ 😉… Thanks for your support Ruth 😊

Tylae is such a natural public speaker when sharing such a personal message. This is a fantastic talk shedding light on a real issue; austerity and cutting youth services does not work. Tylae is completely right, we have to take it into our own hands by being reflective role models and give young people respect and the time of day. Youth work is essential and I thank people like Tylae who are youth workers and dedicate their time to empowering young people 👏

Thanks so much for the comment it’s appreciated. It’s always good for us to reflect on the differences between our childhood and the kids of today. I remember being 13 playing Kirby if you remember it and going for bike rides in the woods. I’m unsure if young people today have experienced either of those things.

What a brilliant Tedtalk - we are relatively new to the world of youth work and collaborating in youth settings with youth workers - but we can SO see the importance of these safe spaces and the value and impact they have. Thank you for sharing Tylae.

The cash terms cuts in youth services between 2010 and 1016 equates to 73%. The recent announcement of investment in the youth service and 300 youth clubs in the Levelling Up programme will only pay to support the next round of funding for the NCS. The youth clubs will continue to be run by the voluntary sector and LAs will fund the premises. However with devolved local governments having to make cuts to services in areas such as social care, it doesn't bode well for the youth services which are always first hit! Great call for change Tylae Close, I hope your message gains the momentum and traction it deserves. Congratulations on a great talk!
