This is my favorite tour yet. He has such comprehensive knowledge of everything about his system. So humble as well. Knowing the pros and cons of different types of speakers, different arrangements, etc. is such a great quality to have. I love interacting on AVS forum but many of the theaters are very similar. It is so nice to see someone with something different with the line arrays. I can tell you that looking at how he has everything set up, he has taken some serious care into making them sound as incredible as they can for every single chair. I always appreciate someone who puts as much effort into his other seats as his own. So many people eq to a single spot and I shake my head because they are ruining the sound for others. I have made it a personal rule that I will not eq room effects more than 3dB to save the integrity of the entire space. If I can’t get a reasonable response like that, then something else needs to change. Again, I just can’t convey how great it is to see someone with serious knowledge. He may be too humble to say it, but I bet he has as much or more knowledge of audio physics, psychoacoustics and overall real world experience than most system integrators and speaker engineers. He knows where objectivity lays in a system, and where subjectivity lays. He knows the most important areas to spend time and effort as well. So cool!

I'm an RF engineer and the "line array" concept is old school for antenna systems, but it is very exciting to see how essentially the same principle is being used in an acoustical environment to enhance the sound experience. Some of the same observations for the sound are very much the same for radio signals projected from a linear array of antenna elements. This is absolutely a very well thought out sound system, I wish I was there personally to experience it for myself. Thanks for the great video, I thoroughly appreciated listening to all the thought that went into making this fabulous system.

Those are not just any line arrays, they are CBT's, you made a great choice! I've never had the opportunity to experience the JBL CBT's but I have to assume they work well. Don Keele and I represented Dayton Audio at CES in 2013 showcasing the CBT36 kit, a ground plane CBT as opposed to a full CBT. People were amazed they could walk up and put their ear right in the top set of drivers and it not be any louder than listening from across the room. Btw, it's more than the fact your ear is only close to one of multiple drivers, the top of the ground plane CBT and each end of a full CBT does not play full output. The math of the CBT has the center of the array playing full output, or -0 dB attenuation and infinite attenuate or zero output at the ends of a 180 deg arc. In practice this is truncated typically being about -12 dB at the ends of the array. I built the first known open baffle CBT back in 2009 for my old theater's center speaker. Don was skeptical of the idea of an open baffle CBT at the time but more recently has published articles along with Richard Taylor concluding that it does have advantages. My new theater will have 9.5' tall full open baffle CBT main speakers and about a 5'-5" wide horizontal open baffle CBT center speaker. Different than your JBL system, these systems will be active to control the shading (attenuation) and part of the center speaker will be DSP curved. I believe your JBL's are passive, is this correct? It's my understanding that they use passive all pass filters to achieve the delays to acoustically curve the array. I believe they are physically straight, is that correct? Great job on your theater, you are certain to enjoy those CBT speakers. I'm sending the link to this video to Don, I know he will enjoy seeing it. I can send you links to the original US Navy papers and Don's published papers or you can probably find them just by searching Keele CBT or Richard Taylor CBT etc.
@jvonengeln
@jvonengeln 2 жыл бұрын
This is very interesting and thank you for sharing!!! The JBL CBT 70J-1 are not physically straight. Their big brother the JBL CBT 1000 is. These 70J-1 have a little bit of a curve to them that you can see in the video. JBL has LOTs of great testing information on their website about them, including polar plots, for all the passive crossover options. Also Audio Science Review (ASR) has tested the JBL CBT 70J-1 on his spinorama and came away pleased with the results and happy with the subjective sound of the speaker. It won't let me link URLS here or I'd have linked you to both for convenience, but they are both easily discoverable through a websearch. I'd love to hear your open baffle line arrays when you are complete. If you are part of this design effort my hat is off to you! (and Don Keele). You guys who create this kind of thing are the stuff of legend to the rest of us. If you are ever in Kansas City Area and would like a demo, I'd be happy to offer you one, and it'd be nice to talk more! I post as Archaea on the various internet forums, and you can find me at ASR or AVSforum - fairly easily. Michael linked my room thread on avsforum in his description. Feel free to PM me any time!
@mfkhometheater7742
@mfkhometheater7742 2 жыл бұрын
@@jvonengeln "Design effort..." Don't give me more credit than I deserve, Don, Richard Taylor and others are the geniuses on this stuff. Don helped in the design of my CBT center speaker back in 2009, the only contribution I made that was different was to make it open baffle. I had been doing open baffle since 1994 so it was only natural for me to combine the two technologies. More recently Richard Taylor along with Don, published papers on open baffle CBT. Don was kind enough to give me credit for having built the first one. In this paper, "Implementation of a Dipole Constant Directivity Circular-Arc Array" you can find a link to my old open baffle CBT center speaker in the introduction paragraph. As for the JBL, I notice that it is curved at one end but this makes me wonder, is it intended to be an asymmetrical CBT? I've often wondered about the possibility of building such a thing, I need to ask Don about this. I'll also take a look at the URLs about it, I've been going back and forth on what to build for side surrounds, conventional 2 or 3 way or some kind of CBT. A ceiling mounted ground plane CBT might work but if the JBL can create an asymmetrical pattern that could be directed then that might be the ideal solution. I suspect Don might want to audition your theater, he's planning to audition mine if I can ever finish building it with my 100% travel job. I have the next two weeks off but there is a lot more than two weeks of work to be done. I'll be talking to him in the next couple days and I've already sent him the link to this video. I would definitely like to audition yours if I'm ever in that area. When mine is eventually completed, you and of course Youthman will be welcome. Edit: I should have searched for those URL's before typing the above, yes it is asymmetrical, they call it a "J array" and it's definitely something I need to explore. I think for the surrounds, it could be a perfect solution. I still prefer full CBT for the mains and horizontal CBT for the center but for the surrounds, this looks to be ideal.

We have a fantastic HT group in Kansas City, and the friendships we've developed over the last 10 years or so, and the comradery, and monthly movie nights (when we've kept the schedule) have helped us each optimize our systems and keep the ball moving forward! A lot of us have become good friends, and these friendships would not likely have started without the HT hobby interest to initially bring strangers together.

@@jvonengeln That was exceptional and detailed explanation Jonathan the Line-array speakers are exceptional for wide coverage. But would really like to know about the drawback of accurate imaging. How bad is it hit. Is it still okay. You have 9 speaker surround so with each line array covering wide range. Were you still managing to get directional accuracy close to if not as accurate as point source speakers.
@jvonengeln
@jvonengeln 2 жыл бұрын
@@VineetReddyVenu this is a good question and we should have dove a little deeper into the topic on the video. Imagine that the best sweet spot is about 3 seats wide instead of six inches wide, but the sweet spot just isn’t as laser focused as traditional speakers more of a wall of sound and you’ll have a decent approximation. Also consider that if you are in the center MLP seat and walk forward towards the center channel (in stereo so the center channel is off) you’ll swear it is on until get to within about 1 foot away. This is unnatural and uncanny but it’s true. You’d think there is a center channel on with stereo in a much larger area than a traditional speaker. If you are a diehard stereo listening purist it’ll likely be to different and something you dislike. Consider though instead that it’ll be the best Dolby Surround upmixing type experience for music listening I’ve heard yet. I always use Dolby surround for upmixing music because if all speakers are identical an upmixer really works well. The guests were really digging the music on Dolby Surround. At one point towards the end of the night I went upstairs to visit with some guests and eat some food and the guys had access to Amazon music HD and were just playing anything they wanted at any volume they wanted in the basement. I heard all sorts of compliments in the silence between songs drifting upstairs. I would almost say superlative type comments. The guests seemed to really like music with the speakers in the Dolby Surround. I do as well. In my opinion it makes stereo listening a has been, and certainly IMO the loss of stereo focus is now than made up for in Dolby Surround envelopment and enjoyment. Now that said. I’ve never been a stereo music purist. I’ve liked upmixing for music for at least 10 years. It’s just that much better with all matching speakers.

And in hifi, it’s a whole different type of speakers from pro sound. Recently got into home theatre, and I tried using the nice expensive hifi speakers, and I notice they don’t work that good. Recently I realized that home theater sound is great with pro sound speakers. And that’s right up my ally! Probably my favorite Home Theater tour video yet! Awesome job guys! Michael, if I may make a suggestion?... a follow-up video chat with Jonathon and Sheldon would be great, these guys have years and years of experience doing GTGs/blind tests with many of the best subwoofers and speakers in the world. And both are great in front of the camera. Their Blind subwoofer test was a real eye-opener, with most not being able to pick out their own subwoofer in the mix - or even tell the difference between sealed and ported.

Before I had the fortune to participate in almost a dozen blind speaker shootouts, I always assumed a single particular speaker could win everyone's affection in a direct A/B comparison. Like a single champion could be easily identified if the comparison was setup fairly and everyone heard the same thing at the same time. That idea has been proven wrong, or at least not as strong an idea as I figured it was at every last turn. ESPECIALLY in blind tests. Also, horn loaded speakers, compression driver loaded speakers, softdome based speakers, ribbon tweeters, coaxial, line arrays vs. narrow dispersion speakers -- they all have their own characteristic. True too that we develop an affinity to some degree with familiarity. So you may find initially at an A/B speaker demo that you most gravitate towards what you are used to hearing, and the guy sitting next to you might gravitate towards what he is used to - and those two things are unlikely the same. (whether wrong or right). This was never more true to my ears than the Salk vs. JTR video blind comparison I mentioned in the interview. I don't think there is necessarily a wrong or right speaker. There is a speaker that is right for the task - like tool for the job, and there are a lot of competent speakers to choose from in that toolbox!

I don't have calibrated mic or Mini DSP, and I don't know the ins and outs of my speakers, but I can still enjoy this hobby and love my room. But props to the guys that do know all that stuff and can calibrate their audio to a level that I'll probably never achieve! So anyway, another great video Youthman! And I have to say that I enjoyed this conversation the most out of all of your room tours so far! Keep up the good work brother!

@jvonengeln 2 жыл бұрын
@Terminator Juice The single most important thing in an audio enthusiasts toolbelt is a calibrated microphone. I've often said if I was starting from scratch all over again, the very first thing I would buy is a calibrated microphone, (in my case omnimic) and it's the last thing I would go without. If you want to really learn quick in this hobby, I can't recommend buying an omnimic strongly enough. It'll raise your understanding of everything mysterious to a basic foundation where it all begins to make sense quickly. You don't have to be an expert by any stretch of the imagination to utilize a microphone to learn. It helps in so many ways, --- speaker placement, subwoofer placement, seating placement, impulse response, SPL verification, compressions sweeps, distortion plots, even evaluating harmonic distortion. The omnimic makes all of this very straightforward and simple, and whatever you don't understand you can seek help on the forums to more clearly make sense of what you capture. The omnimic takes measurements in real time too - so you can see how every change affects what you are hearing immediately. Seriously. Start here if you want to deep dive into the hobby. I'm not expert, but it's so important to get the basics right, and the calibrated mic helps you get there without having prerequisite expert knowledge.

Probably easiest to see that in pictures if you can’t make it out in the video. You’ll find my room thread link in the description. I used a threaded 1.5” NPT pipe from Home Depot at the length I needed and a chief mount to drop down. The top of the lens on the projector is below the HVAC drop down. The NPT pipe comes in any increment of 2” + or -. Spray paint it black.

@@Youthman Makes total sense and I’m sure your room sounds incredible! The company I met with seems very reasonable with the labor aspect of the cost. Unfortunately I have no handy skills. Most of the cost is going to be speakers, projector, receiver, seating, etc. I’m going to need a professional to help me with the intricacies of building a room. I want mine to be somewhat end game (not components but the room itself). I will not be starting with Perlisten speakers or anything like that haha. Right now I only have the Samsung 990B in my living room, so I don’t think I’ll need to spend a ton on speakers/subs to be impressed. For now, that weak system will be good enough, while I save up some money. Honestly it sounds better than some people probably think. 😄
