You might remember Callen Schaub's work from the CBC Arts feed way back in 2017, when we showcased his spinning and splashing way of creating paintings. Now, a year later, he's taken his work out of the studio, all the way to a live performance at an event that engages the audience in his process: the CBC Music Festival.
Schaub calls his traveling studio "the arena," and it includes all his spin painting gear - his spin machine, his bicycle and his swinging trough, along with cups of glitter he hands out to some very eager participants. And doing these sorts of live painting sessions have helped the artist discover that in his work, the "event" can be as important as the end result. Schaub likens his finished products to snapshots, a recording of his making of the painting. So having people experience the process and witness the piece coming to life can be an integral component of his work.
In this video, you get to sit in on the whole experience, while Schaub not only creates his dynamic work in public but lets us in on some of the issues that come with making abstract paintings - like "when do you stop?"

I like when artists of all media types dont follow a genre or a process that has been done before.. It always comes out better to go off gut feelings and to not be afraid to make mistakes!!!!!

Callen is my favorite abstract painter of my generation! Love all his old stuff, current stuff and I can't wait to see all the stuff he creates in the future. One day when I have enough money I will be buying one of his huge pieces for sure!

It is so inspirational to watch you do what you love and see how one little innovative ideas took off to make you successful. I absolutely love that you involved the audience, which I saw in another one of you videos, I see you having the time of your life. I know it's a lot of work for preparing, but it must be worth it. I pray one day my life as an artist takes the shift to take great and prosperous path as yours has taken you.

He could create a "machine" that instead of just spinning, it would wobble or make ellipses, spin on two axes or spin with different types of revolution on the same axis. However, the creative momentum and the way in which he exploited these simple revolutions is appreciable

I like that this actually need some work i'd say. Like the spinning and he's also interacting with people and all. Some people just do splish splash on an empty canvas and call it the never ending universe of thanos and his daughters. And it sells for millions but there is just like shades of blue splashes on the canvas. This even looks kind of fun.

Cool! I found those two (studio vs public) just recently by playing guitar in the streets and painting at home. To give energy to people is the whole rockstar deal. Check out Juzzie Smith busking. He sings about this very thing in the streets. Awesome video. Thx man!!

That is my question for a lot of abstract pour artists... why didn't you stop... they have something really cool looking, then end up screwing it up by screwing with it just because it has a little or a lot of negative space.

Well atleast he makes spin art in his own way and doesnt just use a drill and sell it,he uses his hands,and he throws the buckets and trays of paint in different ways,so he actually does work on it

The fact that it spins creates a neat effect, but it doesn't take talent, creates lots of wasted paint. I mean...make a computer app that does this. Same thing without the mess.

What is the point of this art? I mean an artist expresses his thoughts emotions with art but this is simply what is created by that spinning machine swing etc.its beautiful at frist but after sometime that becomes monotonous too.the art world has become nothing more than a money laundering business

He addressed that. He said the audiences experience keeps him from getting bored, and when he's alone he experiments with different techniques, thus keeping it from getting monotonous at any point. He is potentially opening up all those children to become artists one day, and shitting on another artist doesn't make you an intellectual or "a deep thinker". Besides thoughts and emotions are abstract, just like his art is, so I don't see the big deal. He's doing what he loves and that's good enough in my book, that's what a true artist does.
