His history in the world of acoustic jazz guitar is pretty amazing, and he played only one or two *very* short single note solos (more like fills) in his entire career. Briefly - Freddie Green is considered by most knowledgable guitar players as the greatest rhythm guitarist in history. Not "jazz rhythm guitarist". And he was the "heartbeat" that kept the Basie band "in swing" by playing steady 4/4 chords built from 3, 2 or even just one note (he also did a ton of sessions outside the Basie band). You don't always *think* you can hear him, but there's a "heartbeat" always going that cuts through the band - with no amplifier. Just a big acoustic archtop (Stromberg, GIbson, Epiphone or Gretsch), heavy strings, high action - approaching 1/2" in his later years (really - look at some other videos) - impossibly long/strong fingers and a quick right wrist "snap", and an encyclopedic knowledge of theory/composition/chord construction and what was the important stuff to *leave out*.
