I'm a Philippine-born Pinoy-Am Army vet who wishes to split my retirement years between Pinas and the American South. I would spend 100% there if it wasn't married to a white woman. I want her and our Hapa kids to see where I grew up (Metro Manila). Now, watching videos from expats, I may decide to live in Dumaguete or at least not in QC.

Interesting topic, Mike! Why are there more KZfaqrs in Dumaguete? I guess that's fairly simple. There are more foreigners in Dumaguete than in any other area of the Philippines, and many foreigners are vlogging. So it's only normal that there are more vloggers in Duma. I like the way you describe how some vloggers go for click bate. There are even those who show as much boob as legally allowed to attract subscribers. I'm vlogging as a hobby. I only have a few hundred subscribers and get less views in a couple of weeks than the established vloggers in one hour. But that is my choice. I have no intention of monetising and that gives me the liberty of posting the content that I like instead of the content that attracts a lot of viewers. I don't talk about bananas, pussies and BJs and I like to keep it that way. That's why I prefer to watch KZfaqrs like yourself.

Great topic M&J! The one Vlogger who should be highly praised separately from all Vloggers is Shay Travels. You mentioned her as a Filipina Vlogger, but she is beyond being a Vlogger, and her topics are not just about bananas and relationships, but are about substance and relevant issues. She's a journalist/documentarian who tells her stories with her amazing camera work and she seems to be making her videos to either bring her viewers to appreciate Nature, or to do good for others. The others are fun, but she needs to get more credit, and viewers. Some of her videos are like National Geographic quality. Sorry for such a long comment, but I noticed she only has like 4k subs when everyone else is like 10k or higher. It's just a matter of time. Substance should be rewarded. You guys are great! Keep it up.

@@mikesphilippineretirement Yes, I saw it. You're right on, but for me, Shay Travels is #1. My Filipina wife likes watching her too, even though we have to wait for each new one. Shay should get onto Pea's channel or Old Dog. I think she's too shy to ask. But it won't matter if she keeps making these kinds of videos. People will notice her. Much appreciate your honesty, and love Janet too. I enjoyed the livestream with Janet and Shay, and I never watch livestreams. Too long, and mostly rambling.

There's no denying the abundance of vloggers in Dumaguete, but in my view only a small portion of them provide solid information and value to the viewer. It is important as a viewer to have your filtering mechanism switched on and not just take everything you hear at face value. Those who can validate what they preach (i.e. "show receipts") are the ones to follow, the insight and advice provided is helpful and even entertaining. I just wish there were more expat/foreign vloggers focusing on other communities in the Philippines. No disrespect to those in Dumaguete, but there are many other places in the country which I'm sure can offer a good quality of life.

Interesting Assessment Mike; Its great to have the variety of perspectives, personalities, ages and experiences in that most popular Expat region. The variety provides a more complete picture and knowledge of life there and is a great help to those of us considering moving there. Yes there is some overlap but one confirms the other or adds clarity another didn’t have. It also helps screen out the BS when you find and watch the good ones like you, Old Dog, Mark, Steve, etc. So its good to have many of you honestly sharing knowledge and experience w viewers. As you know, having trailblazers saves so many hassles upon visiting. Or just gives a view into another Country we would not know otherwise. Its great to have you all to learn from. I was so prepared for my recon visit that it went great w/o a hitch - due mostly to you guys- and the variety of info. Keep up the good work and collaborations w you various talents! John

Interesting commentary Mike - definitely some truths there tho I may have other ideas about why there are so many KZfaqrs in Duma. The sense of community at Ground Zero is indeed palpable but I believe it's really because Dumaguete has attracted many older foreigners for valid reasons. I loved it there but my younger GF - not so much so will likely stick with Cebu as my Philippines base. Many of us spent our days during the pandemic watching KZfaq and living vicariously through various popular creators. Many of us watched and thought we could do as good or better job and we were probably right. That said KZfaq is not as easy as it seems. If you have the ability to talk for 10 minutes in one take (like you have just so ably demonstrated) and then publish after some basic editing then it is more viable. However a creator like Shay whom you mentioned must put so much more effort into one ten-minute video. So I love her creative ability and that super-soothing voiceover doesn't hurt either 😁But I suspect she will need to grow (as she is) to sustain that effort - something like Pea has demonstrated is possible. For me I truly do it for fun and of course nothing would please me more than to see my channel grow but if it doesn't that's OK. I will continue to try to put out honest, decently-edited and varied (not good for the algorithm) content for those that enjoy it. Finally, congratulations on the rapid growth of your channel - well-deserved for straightforward, honest and informative comment.

I'm the opposite, I wouldn't want to be in a place with a lot of foreigners, and definitely not a touristy area. I've been around foreigners all my life, why go to another country just to be around them some more. Being around locals I would get to learn more about THEIR culture, and not just have the same American crap I've lived with forever.

That's one concern I have on dumegette, everyone trying get rich quick with sooo many doing it ,and constantly having people shove phone cameras in your face ,I'm wondering if someone like me that doesn't want to do youtube could live a reasonable quiet and private life ?? or should I be rethinking dumegette and choose Iloilo instead ??I I like your Channel and shays for info and heartfelt moments but that's about it really ,hope you guys do well and stay grounded.

I couldn't agree with you more Steve about Shay and Mike. Shay is a rare find, Mike is very honest. I don't comment much, but I just made a comment about Shay here. I was in Duma last summer for a week and no one put a phone in my face. I only saw one Vlogger the whole time when I went to Ground Zero. That was Mark Thornton. I didn't say hello, and neither did he. Maybe it's different now as there are more Vloggers there than a year ago?

Yea al I realize a lot of them are just supplimenting their income and they conduct their channel with responsibility but I'm referring to the newer group that are going over there and have little or no income and think they are gonna be youtube stars and get rich and the married ones that hide it,they would push a little hard on interviews to make it work .

I found the Dumagetuete KZfaqr's through Pea's Videos... One of my Exes Filipino Nephews shared one of her videos... I "liked the vid" & the Algorithm DOOMED me. My only concern for the Dumaguete area, is that in the four years before I retire, Negros Oriental will get Saturated with Expats that will soak up the available housing. Anyway, I'm looking at similar areas that aren't as popular online. I'm relocating when I retire anyway, so my plan is to liquidate & stash a half dozen boxes at my Son's place... Fly out on vacation, spend a week or ten days each in several places. If I acclimate, settle in one of the places & have my stuff sent to me. If not, I could move near family in the US.

One thing with KZfaq is, it's NOT a guaranteed/reliable source of income, some channels may not even get monetized, and KZfaq can demonetize any video/channel whenever they feel, don't rely on income from KZfaq. It's also not as simple as many think it is, it does require work. When it comes to clickable thumbnails, just click bait it and put a pretty lady in a bikini up 🤣. Me personally, I prefer the channels that provide actual helpful information, not story telling, an event that happened to that person isn't much importance to me. Of course sometimes the moral of the story can be important, but I would rather just hear the moral and not the long drawn out story that's just to make the video over the 8 minute mark. I like the interviews, getting other people's perspectives is always good, but I wonder how many are being HONEST with their answers or just saying what they think the viewers want to hear. Like a foreigner interviewing a Filipino/Filipina about foreigners, are they really giving an HONEST answer or being polite because it's a foreigner interviewing them. Are the questions in the interview pertinent and helpful or just more click bait sexual things, is the interviewee actually paying attention and showing they want to be there or are they paying more attention to their phone? I wouldn't have a problem with a lady I was with starting her own KZfaq channel, WITH CONDITIONS. She goes into knowing not all channels are successful and it's not a get rich quick scheme, she will have to put in time, effort, and work. More importantly, MY private life remains private!!! I would have no problems helping her BEHIND the camera, but I don't want my private life put out there for everyone else to see. She will also remain "classy" at all times, not wearing tight skimpy clothes or bikinis showing off all her "goodies" or talking about sexual topics that are no one else's business but ours, demeaning herself just to get clicks and views. The type of videos you put out will attract the type of audience you want, if you put out serious/informative videos, you'll attract people seriously considering retiring there and looking for a serious relationship, put out sexual content you'll attract the deviants. A man is a direct representation of the woman by his side, if she's classy and respectful, he will be seen as such also, if she's disrespectful and showing off her body, then he is seen as a low life as well. I personally wouldn't want to be in a place with a lot of foreigners, with all their drama, stress, and complaining, there wouldn't be any relaxation and peace. If you're around foreigners you'll just revert back to your normal ways. Being around mostly locals, you'll be able to learn about THEIR culture.

@@mikesphilippineretirement Yea it seems it has many more foreigners there and keeps drawing more everyday and I'm sure it is going to keep growing fast. the only negative thing for new comers is going to be the cost of things there. Dumaguete is starting to sound like the joke we have in states about all the old people moving to Florida. I think if you are an expat under 50 years old; you should live a little and travel PH for a bit before settling down in Dumaguete. There's no rush to settle down if you are still under 50 years old, there are plenty of Filipinas to go around, and new Filipinas enter the dating game (market) every month. Take your time to learn about the country and its people. A lot expats are

I still think Duma is a boring place as foreigners going to retire in a foreign country interested in working on KZfaq. These information nowdays what you put on KZfaq is thousand times discussed and those who rely on a KZfaq info are those who never lived away from mum haha. The famous youtubers like Gio,Paul, Reekay can't really make nowdays nail-biting videos anymore and even Pea lost topics. Post covid is the end of the KZfaq era for the Philippines.

The problem is all talk and no substance. I try to screen all the crap out and watch a 2 or 3. Be careful guys, the Philippines is catching on to the whole youtube income stream and they will be enforcing an employment tax and the proper work visa just like other countries. That will likely affect many foreigners on limited income.

I look all the time for the new Negros and Duma area ones and old ones I never knew. Example Married “Ting the Ordinary Filipina” and single “Travel with Gelay in the Philippines” in Duma up and comers. Gelay tourism student in college. Sexy “Jenalyn” in Duma bikini shows mainly haha. “It’s Me” married expat in Amlan is cool. Eccentric “Philippines Expat Retirement Hillbilly Pete” and his nice wife’s “Grace and Pete vlog” provides views and info on living in the province jungle of the beaten path in the hills of Vallehermoso Negros Oriental. He’s been there 13 years now. A few single expat guys (no names) are probably not gonna make it. And as a southerner I just loves crazy “Juelles in the Philippines” in Dauin. Heck there are so many great established ones for sure in Dumaguete. Kinda cool next time I visit there see some be like meeting movie stars haha. Keep up the GREAT work you two. 20k subscribers next crossing! PS maybe you guys can get ole hillbilly Pete to interview with Mark or You sometime…13 years there now a long time he’s probably got some good turds of wisdom.

Mike, I've been debating on whether or not to start a channel when I get there. I'll be retiring and building a house in Sablan Benguet which is a province close to Baguio. I'm thinking about doing it to help people that want to build a house in a small province as I'm sure it's a totally different experience compared to larger areas. I'm not interested in any money as I will have no problem living on my pensions. Matter of fact, if somehow I do make money, it will be donated to help out the homeless and the unfortunate in Sablan and surrounding areas. I'm pretty personable and my wife is nuts! LOL.............what's your thoughts on starting one in a small province not to mention Baguio which I haven't seen any vloggers there.

I personally don't see a problem with donating money IF you can afford to do so without hurting your own bottom line. I have given a SMALL donation to a couple Filipino channels, like Roger&Ismi/American Man Filipino Wife, but they are ones that are constantly out doing charity work (Many of their videos are of this). I worked to EARN the money I have and can decide if I want to donate to help someone out. A person shouldn't just give to anyone and everyone on KZfaq, especially not to a Filipina just because he thinks she's cute and he can buy her attention and affection, not all of them have good intentions, you have to decide that for yourself BEFORE donating. There was one channel I watched a few videos of (Won't name the channel) and said to myself, this Filipina sounds VERY westernized and a scammer. Her videos always talked about needing money for this and that, her video description was nothing but ways to send her money. A few months later many were talking about her being caught for being a scammer, you just have to be careful who and how much you send, but there is nothing wrong with helping out the ones that are helping others too. I do agree, never send money to an LDR relationship, you can't be scammed by them if you don't send money.
