Worth noting, the card that Kaiba uses to jam the gun is Gyakutenno Megami, which translates to "Goddess of Turnabout", which is a very appropriate card to turn the situation around.

You missed out on my least favourite change. Joey's arc in Battle City!! In the original he wanted to earn a match against Yugi, win his Red-Eyes back fairly and become a true duelist. In the 4-Kids version he is just "Helping Yugi" defeat Marik, it sucks so hard.

One of my biggest issues in the dub was the motive for kidnapping Mokuba in Duelist Kingdom. The dub claimed you needed a Kaiba family member to control the company, which is the dumbest thing in the world considering Dartz buys KaibaCorp later. The sub gave them an actual legitimate reason for kidnapping him, as he had the key to new technology Kaiba was working on. 4kids- Guns, Blood, the word Death, and punching/smacking someone is bad, but corporate espionage and kidnapping are just fine.

I stick with the manga. I've got no idea why they changed the names. Manga Yugi was savage af. Blew people up with gunpowder, sealed kids in spirit worlds, killed several people or left them with disabilities etc, etc. Hell, there were thugs who were going to kill people using yoyos ffs

The Kaiba believing in the magic stuff in the Japanese ver makes the Dark Side of Dimensions dub make a lot more sense. Also sad all the awesome Kaiba moments were edited out since he's my fav character.

The changes that bother me most are the alterations of villain motivation. When I watched the subbed version, I was really confused when Pegasus never even mentioned Yugi's puzzle, and that the island eliminators have nothing to do with Pegasus at all. But I did think the story was much better with Pegasus wanting to head Kaiba Corp. Same with Marik. I think it's a lot more in character for him to want to kill Atem rather than take his Millenium item, and it also, for me, made his alliance with Bakura make more sense.

fun fact the part when Panic kidnapped Mai Valentine it was not cut from the English dub it was just in a different episode I think it was in the ending of the episode where Joey duels Rex.

I thought for sure you would've included the scene where Dark Bakura coughs up blood after Yuugi defeats him in the final season.

While I do agree that most changes were kinda silly and annoying, I will say besides the shadow realm, I liked the change of Pegasus' motives simply because desperately trying to bring his wife back from her untimely demise has more of the "tragic lover" thing going for it as where just trying to make a hologram would just seem kinda weird/creepy. But that's just my opinion.

Y'know, it's kind of interesting that Arcana has The Winged Dragon Of Ra in his hand, because Marik later mentions that he tried duplicating that card and placing it in the decks of some of his 'weaker servants', but that the copies were apparently defective.

i remember when i was at the cinema and watched the dark side of dimensions and saw the guard pull the gun on aigami i literally said out loud "oh man they didn't censored the gun" and got some laughs from some people XD

wow, i knew that the English Dub and Japanese Sub were different, but these edits and censorings make it a lot more badass. i've never watched the Original version of the series before but now i want to. The Battle Series saga seems extremely dark and gore like with Yami Marik killing people, torturing Mia and Bakura banishing his victims to Hell.

You know, I was grew up reading the manga, and I was surprised to learn people *didn't* know the Shadow Realm was made up by 4Kids! I saw a viral post online about it back around 2014, and I didn't get. It didn't really occur to me that people couldn't see through it.

Here's what I think Kazuki Takahashi needs to do, they need funimation to DUB not only duel monsters but also SEASON 0 as well!!! Yugioh needs to be re dub again but with no filler, no censorship, keep the original Japanese script, keep the original all 5 openings and endings, keep the same music score as the Japanese dub, and last but not least make it more HD and possibly Blu-ray. Yugioh really does need a reboot like dragonball z, when akira toriyama decided to remake the series better well same thing here is needed!!! and it's not to late for newcomers and teens of this new generation to love the original yugioh

Oh yeah, I forgot 4Kids had the fetish of changing a character's background Cards in the deck. Also, I can honestly say I like the Shadow Realm concept a bit more than the just death concept. I like the actually darker "You will be sent to a realm to be tortured for eternity"

Pointless Censorship.

You forgot the "Heart of the cards". This is a recurring thing in the dub, but in the original it was only mentioned ONCE in the first episode and then never again.

I understand why they changed some things to make the show kid friendly, but why cut out the extra scenes from the final episode. I don't know if you noticed that they actually forgot to censor the whipping scene from one of the Crash town episodes in 5ds. That scene disturbed me and I was 16 at the time, imagine how a younger kid would've felt. I can't believe that somebody messed up so much that Vivian and Arcana got God cards XD.

It's not a censorship but it is a frequently repeated edit that I find interesting/potentially unnecessary. 4Kids frequently filled silence with dialogue in the dub just cause. One example is that when Shadi is in Bakura's room during Battle City there's no dialogue but in the dub he internally monologues about things being off with the Millenium Items and the world being in peril until that's sorted out before simply leaving the dude who took Pegasus's eye. It made it seem like Shadi failed at his one job even though it was probably more of a Shadi just being like "ugh this a-hole" (due to their previous encounter in DSOD)

To 4Kids credit the "Shadow Realm" makes more sense in some scenes than others.

Also in the manga, Pegasus kills Keith by creating a gun from Keith's hand and shoots himself in the head. Also I remembered fully well that the scene with Panic (or Player Killer) abducting Mai was still in the dub version

Honestly I always liked the shadow realm concept more than just straight up death. You know because i'd rather die than have my soul be stuck in eternal torment.

When it came to the voice acting, music, and even some comedic one-liners, 4Kids did a damn good job. Honestly, I'd prefer watching the dub over the sub if 4Kids didn't change almost everything from the original. I still enjoy watching the dub, but I think everyone can agree that these censorships almost ruined it.

What about when Bakura licks the eye after he steals it from Pegasus?

I looked for a video of this RIGHT AFTER I saw Ep. 32 on Netflix. I thought it was really weird that a guy like Bandit Keith would just point his finger at Pegasus. I'm absolutely shocked now to find out that Yu-Gi-Oh! was originally a much darker show that the cartoon I watched as a kid. Thank you!

I've started watching the original Yu-Gi-Oh! and I'm slowly realizing how much changed between the original dub and the English dub. It's pretty eye-opening.

In the Original anime, Mako Tsunami's father actually died. In the dub he's missing

One choice I find interesting is that they still call Atem early on Yami Yugi or just Yami. Yami in Japanese means dark, implying that Atem, while still the good guy compared to Yami Marik and Yami Bakura, is still darker than regular Yugi, if not a more morally ambiguous character. This can be seen in the original during the duel in season 1 with the eliminator dude where in the end, Yami basically kills him. But most scenes of Atem being this morally ambiguous character are completely removed or changed. I find it interesting that they still call him Yami because all the other characters who are called Yami, like Yami Marik and Yami Bakura, are clearly the bad guys and I'm surprised 4kids didn't catch that possible relation.

The funny thing is many of the incidents of censorship, such as the dark energy discs and building with a vortex to the shadow realm, weren’t fooling many children. The first time I saw the Arcana duel I remember looking on incredulously while thinking, “Uh, no, that thing is going to cut off the loser’s legs, but nice try.”

I hope we get a special edition pack with all 224 episodes English dub uncensored. A fan can have hope for these things you know.

I’ve known the shadow realm is a 4kids creation for years. But it still blows my mind because essentially they created something worse than death. I also love how in season 4 Joey punched Atem but it was censored in the English dub but Atem still ends up on the ground and as a kid I couldn’t understand how. Now I know tho!

Finding out the shadow realm wasn’t real always messed me up when I found out years ago. But it surprised even more to find out that a 4Kids dub of ANY show actually added something cool.

It always bugged me how the Arcana duel was so hmm how do I say it? Yellowish? As in everything in the dub is yellowed out and the characters look ill.

One of the funniest changes for me personally is in the dub when Yugi is fighting Seeker or whatever the Exodia guy's name is and "Seeker" starts monologuing in his head about how ''I will soon gather all 5 exodia pieces and win!" while looking at his hand and you can actually see all 5 pieces already there in his hand!

All I can say is, thank god for LittleKuriboh.

I wished Netflix had instead, the uncensored version of the dub.

I mostly prefer the original over the dub, but my favorite dub change is the reason Yami was holding back against Mai. In the original, he wasn't taking her seriously as a threat due to his pride and the fact she'd lost against Jonouchi earlier in the arc and against Anzu like yesterday. And that's fine for piling on about Yami's character flaws at that point to give him room to grow during the finale and going into the next arc, but I liked what the dub did way more, because in their previous Duel Yugi had just had to stop Yami from pushing Kaiba to kill himself, and it makes complete sense that he'd lose trust in Yami and start holding him back out of fear that he'd be willing to kill Mai or anyone else for the sake of winning and saving Yugi's grandpa. It's a surprisingly dark and delightful twist for the dub to make, and although the anime missed out on this entirely, I think it really helps build up to Yami's decision at the end of the arc in the manga to stop doing Penalty Games.

There's even a scene that you've missed. But on the episode evil spirit of the ring. There was a scene where after joey as the flame swordsman destroyed the white magical hat, bakura grabs on to his chest like he has pain in his heart but on the 4kids version, it was cut and was replaced with bakura looking pissed

In my opinion I like the concept of the shadow realm. It adds something to the show instead of just dying. I hope 4Kids doesn't dub the new yugioh. The new one sounds so cool without all the censorship

If I remember correctly, the Mai scene with them having dinner and Tea and the portable shower also cut out a part where Mai sees a cruise ship passing by and briefly goes into her past. And when they had the campfire dinner, there was cans of Pepsi in the original, but then I think they cut them out completely (idk, maybe 4Kids was afraid of getting sued by Pepsi?) and it just looks like Mai is raising her hand for no reason when she was actually drinking the Pepsi. At least these are changes I remember. Haven't seen the dub in a long time.

Sensoring the guns was the dumbest thing ever.

One of the silliest changes was in the Yugi vs Kaiba duel at the Duelist Kingdom tournament. In the original Kaiba said he'd take a step backward for ever 100 points of damage he'd receive (basically implying he'd commit suicide if his LP reached 0). In the dub he claimed the shockwave from the attack would throw him off the building. A shockwave? from a hologram?

I wish they would redub the subbed version of Yugioh again.

I know I’m late but when 4kids edits out most text, even the English words, it’s because they were making a global version that would be released not just in English. A lot of other language dubs use the 4K edits as a base, since it is cheaper to just 4k’s removed text instead of keep translating the original text for each dub.

If anyone is interested, I stumbled upon a slip up by 4Kids while rewatching the series recently. During the Battle City finals, right before they draw the numbers for the first two duelists, there’s a shot of everyone (except for Marik, Odion, and Kaiba) looking at the lottery machine. If you look at Bakura’s arm (he’s in the upper right side of the shot), you can see the blood stain on the bandage from the stab wound. Any other time during the finals the bandage is completely white (where they edited out the blood).

There are 3 Duels through the entire Yu-Gi-Oh! Series that I still want to see Kaiba vs Bakura ( A longer duel, not that 5 Turn match from the last season) Joey vs Kaiba ( A longer and more serious version,Red vs Blue Eyes would have been epic) Yugi vs Joey ( A serious, final and satisfying match, the Duelist Kingdom duel was amazing, the one from battle city was alright but this would have beeeeen so awesome) Great Video as always Dylan!

5:56 this is one of those changes that 4Kids did right. They changed Virus Destruction Cannon from a spell to a trap card, just like it is in the official TCG.

I actually don’t mind the Ra and Obelisk in the hand of Arcana. Marik said they made several copies of the god cards for testing purposes. It would be plausible that Marik gave the copies to Arcana to potential use them.

My most recent one was Shun beating up the guards in the recycling facility because it was funny and epic. Seriously one guy beats up a dozen guys XD Shun should open a karate school with Gongenzaka and Tsukikage XD
