25 Jun 2023 A woeful, less-than-credible storyline surely. Let me justify my assertion, please. Tse Yin's character, for all his bravado in pursuing/attempting to revive Nam Hong's affections, held hostage by Lee Peng Fei (ex-mobster/smuggler), is a woeful non-fighter easily beaten up/subdued by the latter's henchmen while forcing his way into the lion's den, recklessly/thoughtlessly, if determinedly. And Hong's utter helplessness (a poor unconvincing performance here I maintain) is more self-defeatist and weak-willed than a true reflection of her "imprisoned" circumstances. She could have escaped Fei's clutches any which avenue (why, she even got to drive out of the mansion in a car late at night, with the groundkeeper's full compliance in letting her out!), even flee the country afterwards. At the very least drive up to a police station/call the authorities from her bedroom phone, for goodness sake! Talk of mightily suspending one's disbelief! What about Yin being handed a loaded revolver by Fei himself just prior to the former's assigned mission out to the"high seas/international waters" to rendezvous with the smuggler? Yin could easily have there and then forced his way out of his own "confinement/imprisonment", making his dash for freedom with Hong. Oh please! How about this piece of farce to top it all? The female servant who peeped through Hong's bedroom keyhole unannounced with Hong perfectly positioned at precisely the right distance inside at the perfect moment to gesture for the maid to call for help. Unless the two women were telepathically blessed! There are just too many unbelievably convenient, silly, even embarrassing timely coincidences/escapes from tight spots, gap-closing deus ex machina (artificial, very unlikely dramatic device-intervention contrived to resolve/remove/settle a problem/sticky situation too easily). I also won't hold back either on the badly staged verbal and physical altercations between the two millionaire suitors hankering after Hong, playing out slapstick-like a la Laurel and Hardy's comedic routine. I will accept though that the intention is to provide comic relief. Overall, a pretty amateurish crime-adventure caper that reads like a juvenile Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew novel. Yin and Hong, and Fei too, certainly had better outings in their life's oeuvre. P.S : 1963 - Nam Hong at the peak years of her physical comeliness. That I vouch for! Thank you.
