I am an arborist, I can tell you for sure that the 59/66 SKS definitely has an elm stock, you can tell by the wood grain. It's very stringy and knotty wood, hence the beautiful woodgrain.

Misha, there's European beech native to Serbia, I'm putting my money on that, but there's several types of oak too which is also a possibility.

Very nice rifles. I've got 3 M59/66A1s with sequential serial #s, but haven't been able to secure an M59 or a 59/66 yet. The wood on your 59/66 is really eye-catching, almost more like the wood on the M48s I have. I'd never heard the elm theory. I'd always heard some species of birch.

Haha, I picked up an M59/66 last weekend. I stupidly sold one a couple years ago, but I picked this one up for the same price, so can't complain. Took it out shooting on yesterday and was nailing steel plates at 300 yards without issue, using the cleaning kit and a magazine for windage. As for the wood, it would appear to be Elm, based on the M48 rifle production which was coinciding, just previous to these guys. A leaf KZfaqr named Riflechair, not sure if I can link a video in here, but I'll try He goes into a discussion of the types of wood etc. Link for video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pN6BdJCh1ZOomIU.html )

Another great video! I always liked the looks of the Yugo SKS but never got one because it is just so large for a 7.62x39 rifle. It really loses a lot of the carbine vibe and unfortunately we can't take advantage of it's anti-tank grenade launcher.

So I have a quick question, I have the 59/66 - A1 and my stock seems to be different than any stock I’ve seen on any other gun of the same type. I wish I could add a picture, it has a padded butt stock, but looks exactly like every other surplus stock I see, however Mine has no spot for the pill cleaning kit. I received mine out of a crate, covered in Cosmoline with a record book of everyone, it had been issued to the original cleaning kit from the 60s and some other things. could this stock be a parade stock or something? You’re the goat so I hope you see this considering this comment is so late. Much love and respect!

I can't tell you the reason, but I can confirm I've whitnessed it myself. In fact when i bought mine here, my dad bought one from the same distributer, and his came w/o the holes. Maybe something to do with the night sights? Total guess there.

@@jeramyw yes, first process of elimination was to make sure the chamber was clean.
