If the friend is a close friend to the girl but not with the boy, and the boy is really peeved about her struggling to lift the leaf by chopsticks, the boy could gesture to his girlfriend about it, then the girl should help her friend. If the three of them are really close friends, the boy can bypass his girlfriend and he can help her by putting the leaf to her plate, he may also say friendly remark such as "you're such a klutz". But he should never pick the leaf and directly feed it to the friend's mouth however close him and the friend is, regardless if they are in or not in the presence of the girlfriend.

@meimeivaj8334 its just a pointless convo to have for the purpose of bantering to fill the time., there’s plenty of meaningless conversations that I have in the US, about scenarios that’s really pointless but it’s fun to argue just for the sake of it. Also Americans aren’t very openminded, idk where this stereotype comes from but a lot of Americans are very close minded unless you agree with them .

I had this discussion with my friends too and my Korean friend tried to make an example for us to understand "if your friend had trouble opening a bottle of beer and your boyfriend opened it for her in front of you would you be mad" I still didn't see the big deal in it and for me, if you see someone struggling you should just want to help them is a big green flag. It's just really immature, honestly. If your friend is someone you care about, then you want your boyfriend to treat your friend well too. Helping a friend with a vegetable isn't cheating. Like how jealous do you have to be to think that? If you have a problem with your boyfriend doing that, then help your friend yourself. But seriously, it just feels like dumb to get jealous about your boyfriend helping your friend it's something so minor while in your presence. You can see there's nothing going on. He's just being helpful. It really annoys me when people think like this because you're just removing your partner's agency in the matter- let him do what he was going to do. The perilla leave debate is so confusing for anyone who's not Korean because it's just a vegetable and in the example your friend is the only one who needs help. So helping someone with something as insignificant as that is seen as normal. So a better example to explain the nuance would be "Say you your bf and your friend are going somewhere. She gets in the front passenger seat, so you have to sit in the back and your bf says nothing about it." or "You, your bf, and your friend are in school and are walking to another class. Your bf offers to carry your friends stuff for her even though you're both holding stuff."

But the thing is this is just a cultural thing people outside of Korea just wouldn’t understand. There’s a level of intimacy behind it, the equivalent is more like if your significant other lent another person their jacket or coat when it’s cold out. I don’t think it’s necessarily fair to say these kinds of things when you don’t even fully understand the cultural scope of it.

I think what ppl like manchae were looking at was not the reason but the interaction like your bf looked over and then suddenly reached and helped your friend but how yunjin, me, and everyone else was looking at was the reason like, so what he just helped her, she was struggling, no biggie so this debate was probably to see how different ppl will react and relate to it

Yunjin is right though. It says a lot more about YOU when you wouldn’t even trust your own friends, let alone your boyfriend. The only people I see having this sort of debate online are the popular at school type. It really just shows that they probably have no idea what it’s like to have real not toxic relationships. I find the mindset honestly disturbing. Like how many people think like this???

Being kind is an attractive trait is it not? Your bf taking time to help ur friend shows what kind of person he is. If something this trivial bothers u then ur probably insecure or don't trust either ur bf, friend or both. If u don't trust them (with understandable reason) then address it or leave them

As a korean, It is not an ordinary salad in America. It's hard to eat alone because it's seasoned. Of course I didn't see it as a precondition that I checked and my lover helped me in the meantime. But if you don't understand it, I think it's a cultural difference. And this is not a big deal. It's just a topic to kill time.
