Do you live in your yurt year around? How do you heat yours, and are you able to keep it comfortable in the winter? How are you liking it after 5 yrs? Would you do it again if given a choice? Screwing the lattice to the rafter supports is more part of the wind kit than the snow. It keeps the yurt from twisting in strong winds. Not sure it is really needed here, but better safe than sorry.

Hi Gale, for better or worse the permitting process was pretty lax in Vermont. They mainly cared about waste disposal, so once we had a state permitted septic system installed they were not picky about what we would build. Property setbacks were also needed for a zoning permit, but in the middle of a thirty acre plot, that was not an issue. We have yet to see how well the yurt performs in winter, and whether we like living there as a permanent home (backup plan is live in it while taking our time building something else and rent it out on Air BnB or something along those lines).

in New Hampshire some towns do not require building permits .

Well, nobody tried to stop us from putting it up here in rural Vermont (permitting is easy and they didn't care that it was a yurt). But we can't find insurance for our situation (not just the yurt, but the solar system structures) unless we build a more conventional building and start the search all over again.
