LYRICS
Father:
It’s not time to make a change
Just relax, take it easy
You’re still young, that’s your fault
There’s so much you have to know
Find a girl, settle down
If you want you can marry
Look at me, I am old but I’m happy
I was once like you are now
And I know that it’s not easy
To be calm when you’ve found
Something going on
But take your time, think a lot
Why, think of everything you’ve got
For you will still be here tomorrow
But your dreams may not
Son:
How can I try to explain, when I do he turns away again?
It’s always been the same, same old story
From the moment I could talk, I was ordered to listen
Now there’s a way, and I know that I have to go
Away, I know I have to go
Father:
It’s not time to make a change
Just sit down, take it slowly
You’re still young, that’s your fault
There’s so much you have to go through
Find a girl, settle down
If you want you can marry
Look at me, I am old but I’m happy
Son:
Away, away, away, I know
I have to make this decision alone - no
Son:
All the times that I’ve cried, keeping all the things I knew inside
It’s hard, but it’s harder to ignore it
If they were right I’d agree, but it’s them you know not me
Now there’s a way and I know that I have to go
Away, I know, I have to go
Father:
Stay, stay, stay, why must you go and
Make this decision alone? No

Dear Yusuf, my father taught me your song when I was a child. It was his way of explaining the world to me. He passed away last year but I've had the priviledge to say goodbye to him. I said to him that he could go in peace for he has raised well two brothers and he has a wonderful granddaughter. It was the last song I've listened with my father. Thank you so much for this precious gift. Be in peace!

I got to work on this one trying to extend it into all fathers, because my own wasn´t and isn´t that good, and actually after last year me healing even the slightest of his damages, this year he made sure our relationship would now brake again because of the level of insults because he could not take a joke when I told him my sisters and I would now laugh so much because of seeing how in this life you harvest what you sew?... because him being neurotic we had to be like super extra careful with every little thing or the day would break. And now that we have kids, he´s the one having to be careful with that mouth of his. So... today, with the best sons I could wish for, I must at least thank him for giving me the life, even though abandoned young. And at the end of the day... it was with his records that I knew of Cat Stevens. I would spend hours looking at the covers and listening to Cat´s songs since childhood, so that along with many other positives we have to focus on. No doubt we can screw up until our last day on Earth, if life is for learning and we learn from mistakes, I understood we´re prone to make them till that final day. Happy fathers day to every single father out there, each with their own crosses to bear.

I got to know him better than I ever did growing up and he was a wonderfull W.W 2 veteran who was a wonderful man. Yusuf ought to do one of those time-shift duets with his younger self. Get footage of his younger self to play "the son" and he, now much older, "the father". It would be beautiful. Bless you, Yusuf for this timeless rendition of what "has always been the same, same old story".

Yusuf/Cat Stevens Sir, I listened to this song 51 years ago when we were both young and could appreciate the sons stance clearly--felt we were not truly heard, how we just had to live our dreams and that no one could truly understand the deep feelings as an artist.. Now we both are older and can better see the father's side and understand exactly what his meaning was. Thank you for providing this timeless, heartfelt and deeply emotional song. Just about every time I put this song on my headphones, and listen to it without distraction, emotions well up inside. My lifelong dream was always to raise a son, and I'm doubly blessed to have two I'm very proud of. But going through the process of them moving on, making big decisions on their own, of me having so much I want to share but trying to avoid over-offering advice, of having been a young boy/man once myself, remembering my own challenges, it all just gets me. Cat Stevens/Yusuf really laid a nice track, I love you sir. I don't know a father of sons that isn't touched by you.

OH MAN OH BEAUTIFUL! When he did not sing the son's first part at the original scale, I was a little upset but he still delivered it beautifully. But when he sang the son's second part with the high notes when I did not expect him to, I almost leapt with joy and tears! Live on forever Yusuf
