Democracies did not outperform any other systems because democracies do not exist. The biggest mistake that wrongfully-educated people in the so-called Western "democracies" make is to think that their ability to vote stands for Democracy. In reality, democracy cannot be reduced to elections and the right to vote. Democracy is much broader than just elections. By its definition, Democracy is the power of the people. Real democracy exists only when those, who are elected and given the political power, do what those, who elected them, want them to do. Hence, here is why there is no democracy: 1. Politicians don't do what the People want them to do. Never did. Look at the decades-long low approval ratings of the U.S. Presidents and the Congress. Look at riots of the working class in France and other Western countries. The low ratings and riots are a direct evidence that the People don't approve what the politicians are doing. 2. There is no any formal system in the US and other pseudo-democratic countries for the People to openly discuss important issues, come to agreement of what is wrong and what should be done. There is no any formal or any system for politicians to obtain that information - the information about what the People think, want and decide. There is no any meaningful connection/line of communication between the People and the governing politicians. Polls cannot serve as such lines of communication between politicians and the People. Polls are administered randomly and they depend on mercy and wishes of whoever decides when and how to conduct the polls. I am talking about lack of a formal system in which on a daily basis, every citizen of a democratic country can share and discuss opinions on various issues and look for common grounds for the People on how to shape national policies. A formal democratic system - that would report the results of the People's discussions and the People’s expressed wishes to politicians and have the politicians shape their policies based on that information - does not exist. The reality is completely opposite to that. Any President will always find the time to personally meet and talk with the riches, such as Bill Gates, Bezos, etc. The riches are notoriously included in various Presidential advisory committees in the US and other countries. But the US President does not invite in the same way a regular Joe to discuss policies in the White House. In 2014, Martin Gilens, Professor of Politics at Princeton University, and Benjamin I. Page, Gordon S. Fulcher Professor of Decision Making at Northwestern University, published an article titled “Testing Theories of American Politics: Elites, Interest Groups, and Average Citizens” that reports the results of their empirical research incorporating data for 1,779 policy issues in the US. Their analysis of the data demonstrates that “economic elites and organized groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on US government policy, while average citizens and mass-based interest groups have little or no independent influence.” These empirical findings clearly indicate that there is no democracy because democracy (by its definition) can only exist in countries where average citizens directly influence the official policy of their governments. 3. Furthermore, democracy is impossible in so-called Western “democracies” because the People - the population - are very fragmented and polarized. The people are polarized so deeply that they cannot agree even on a few very important issues. For example, I am concerned about the Climate change problem and I have my opinion that climate change is caused by industrial activities of humankind. However, there are people who deny human-caused climate changes. As a result, the People cannot formulate and express what they want politicians to accomplish because the People cannot even agree on what needs to be accomplished. You might suggest that this is why Western “democracies” are delegated into the hands of the riches. But in reality, it's only another reason why Democracy is fundamentally impossible in modern pseudo-democracies. The People have to be united to create and support their power - Democracy. And the People are not united. The People are torn apart, polarized so that the riches rule the countries as they want. 4. There is no accountability. Whatever politicians do without the People's approval, they get paid and get away without being held responsible. Zero accountability. 5. Countries that call themselves "democracies" have political systems built to defend and promote interests of the owners of private financial institutions and corporations. They only do something for the people when they are afraid of the revolt of the have-nots. Now that COVID-19 is revealing the fact that the political systems are there to protect the interests of the wealthy and their corporations/banks, there will be a lot of demagogy about "saving democracy," which is basically saving the world order that serves the riches. 6. The existing political systems that call themselves "democracies" do not provide equal platform for all the political candidates to reach out to the voters. Running for offices of delegated Power requires LOTS of money. And who is paying for the campaigns? Correct, those wealthy individuals and their corporations are paying. Presidential elections are totally corrupted because the riches and their corporations are paying for presidential campaigns and hide the fact who is paying. Lobbyists belong the same category of organized corruption of the government by the riches. This is called Quid pro quo ("something for something," "a favor for a favor"). In fact, a person from the working class cannot afford running for a president. It's the riches' game. Democracy literally means Power of the People. Literally. There is only one degree of democracy - power of the people - it's when we, the People, have the power. One cannot be "a little" pregnant, and a country cannot be "a little, "somewhat," "to a certain degree" democratic - when the power goes into the hands of groups of the wealthy with their own agendas. The stories of "democratically delegating the power of All to the Few" remain fairy tales. When people elect someone to make decisions for them, they give away their Power to those they elect. Delegated democracy is possible only if the elected do what the People want them to do. And, as I said, low approval ratings of the governments mean that the "leaders" do not do what the People want them to do, which means the People have no Power = No Democracy. The People give away their Power without any guarantees that the Power will be used for their good. It gets to “ironic” situations when the People vote for one Leader NOT because they like his or her political and economic platform but because they DISLIKE other candidates even more than the one they vote for. That is, the riches do not really give the People any meaningful choice.
